Sure.. got to agree - who cares when you can chill out there and still have connectivity. In fact, just been thinking - I could easily spend half the year on the islands and the other half in Costa Rica. Made some good friends there and still have corps operating on the islands.

Dunno where he lived or his background, but that appears very out of the norm. There are plenty wealthy people here and they don't have any problems like that - they don't need one bodyguard, nevermind three *lol*. Can think of two friends who have more assets than God (talking in the billion range, how high, doubt they even know) and they don't have problems.
Tho... it's not uncommon to employ domestic staff here - like maid, gardner blah and sometimes a guard is employed, but sure not normal for a personal bodyguard.
We have never had any crime problems since we came here years ago - in fact, the total reverse - the people are very friendly and willing to genuinely help if there is a problem - and that includes law enforcement who will help with total crap (eg getting into a swamp and pulling your car out) - stuff that is unrealistic to visualize in other places.
Tho sure.. there is crime, but no more than elsewhere - and most of that is petty stuff.
