Is our industry mature?
I was just noticing that the biggest five programs does not appear to have changed in the last year. We can argue as to which are the biggest five but my list is sort of like -
Nasty dollars Top bucks Bang Bros TCG Naughty America There are now more niche programs that are doing great but do not seem to have the size of those mentioned. Is that because as an industry we have matured to the point where it will be hard to break into those ranks? I left off AFF on purpose as they sell dating versus porn. |

the industry is still premature, most sponsors don't even care about security of their own affiliates. i mean how many programs have you seen put their signup and login pages behind ssl? personal and private information being passed through unencrypted but they make a big fuss when you do test joins through your own linking codes.

I guess it is, considering the nature of this industry and the ups and downs that beset it.

The industry isn't even a teenager yet. There's a long way to go.

I am not happy with the way the industry has matured. The new crop wants to get into the adult industry because of what they perceive as 'the lifestyle', i.e. going to parties at conventions, free booze, hot girls, etc and the money is very secondary to them. It is incredible to me that these people actually will spend exhorbitant amounts of money trying to buy their way into the industry without actually even understanding the mechanics of being successful in the adult internet. The exodus of the old schoolers like Andy Dunn of SexSwap, etc is also disheartning. Remember how fantastic his newsletter was? I will always be greatful for his willingness to share knowledge with other webmasters. |

As long as there are so many cowboys on these boards the industry can't be called mature. Perhaps it's in it's "kindergarten" stage.
Toy industry, fashion industry, computer hardware, clothing, food, gaming consoles.... just to name a few all reached to point of being a stable mature industry. Online porn certainly isn't because if it was, not a single newbie would make a sale from his new tgp in his first month. Those few programs you mention above shouldn't be taken as a standard, those aren't large companies. The largest company I know of is AFF with 300 employees. Also think about the fact what big companies are doing right now online, think about what playboy is currently doing. This is an indicator that online porn certainly hasn't reached a mature stage. 10 years from now things will be different, some companies will have their market share and newbies without decent capital won't be able to break into the market. Also keep in mind that this industry has many many niches so you can be very creative in your online ventures, also take note that you do business on the internet which is a very fast changing medium.

This is the internet with a $40 pricetag product. A newbie will ALWAYS be able to break into the industry and make money from day 1.

It will get harder and harder, even today I'm sure that many people try but are failing as we speak. I'm wondering if your statement will stick 20 years from now.

I got into this biz in '97, ducked out in '02, returned in '05. Still strikes me as fast-moving, youthful, vital. Harder to make a buck? Certainly. But far from mature.
Guess a good question is, "What's an example of a mature industry?" Define it then compare the two.

For the answer to the question posed by this thread, you need only look at what has been the "star" topic for the past week.
That the scumware issue didn't simply disappear in a couple of days is a sign that we are beginning to mature. But the lack of participation in the topic is a sign of how far there is to go. I would guess at a further 5-10 years before the cowboys in this business are largely sidelined and we can begin to call ourselves "mature". |
