I held my dad's hand while he died of COPD, and he hadn't smoked a cigarette in sixteen years. Of course, he also had asthma and had been smoking since the 1940's.

Juicy, haven't spoke to you in a while. First, sorry about the news. Thank god you're still young with the ability to make some changes and heal.

Secondly, another way to quit on the "psychological side" of things is this: quit cold turkey (or the patch) and move. That's it, just move away. See, right now in your daily routine, smoking has been associated with everything....ie, lighting up during a simple drive to the store, etc. The point is to drop all the "familiar settings" and get the heck out. People under estimate the power of new surroundings. When you get into a new town/place, just keep in mind that this is your 'new life' where you make some changes....there is no association with smoking anywhere. Just keep it that way. And in this new place, you'll create new daily routines..hopefully without smoking.

I know that sounds weird and 'out there', but this is your life we're talking about it.
And any change can only help you.

Juicy Keep puffin on the Advar, it really helps.
when I found out I had COPD, I could not walk up the 3 flights of stairs to my apt without a breather half way up
Now after a couple of months on the advar, not only can I walk up the stairs I can run up them and not feel winded much.
Now all I have to do is stop smoking, the 5 smokes a day I have
and I should be able to live a decent quality of life.

Don't end up like this:

That's my dad after he'd been intubated and almost died from emphysema. We'd actually given up on him at this point so he was high as a kite on morphine (morphine suppresses your urge to breathe so we only used it as a last resort so he could enjoy his last days).

He did die four years later -- it was very hard to watch, but even harder were the years he was on oxygen and struggling. It's not like you suddenly just DIE of this, you SUFFER FOR YEARS. It sucks. Good luck again with quitting.
