How many USA webmasters have left the country with web income?!
This has got to be common...
Please share with us your stories -- I bet they are interesting! I've always thought of doing this but it's a big commitment... How many of you guys live like a king in another country with your web earnings? |

I thought about leaving Canada to live like a king elsewhere but anywhere I would be willing to move had the same taxes/exchange rate just about.
You'd need to live in a poor country to make bank on your income. I remember someone saying they earn only $400 USD a MONTH and in India that was equal to a great salary. (I think India banned porn so you could get in trouble in some of these places running adult sites) Would you want to live in a place like India to really profit from the USD? |

Who cares if you like the USA -- that's not the question I posed. I already know there are millions of conventional people -- I'm asking for the unconventional people to speak up. Didn't Labret move to Mexico? Didn't Soul_Rebel move to Greece? What happened to these guys? I know LatinaLocator.com moved to Costa Rica and my buddy Nar is planning to move there also. I know another guy that moved to Cypress and has a huge villa there. OnProbation.com is always raving about Thailand...
Fascinating stuff... but let's hear the stories... |

Let's hear from the Indian webmasters... Can you live like a king on $500/month? I used to work w/ a lot of Indian guys at IBM -- they all wanted to find a way to get $500/month from the USA so they could go back to India to live like kings... They were damn serious about this too -- and these guys were living pretty well already in FL -- they made at least $80,000/year.

I have lived in other countries while still working on porn. I just take my laptop and get a net connection (usually dial-up) and I'm good. But I've only worked in modern countries (Europe, Australia, Canada, USA). I briefly considered what it would be like to live and work in the Greek islands (like Crete) or Fiji, but decided that getting reliable net connections is the biggest problem.

NO NO the guy I was talking with said he was living well on $400 USD in India but not like a king. He might have been full of BS though. I'm interested in this topic as well. Post some real life stories folks.

I used the money I made setting up Bourbocams and the first Internet Cafe in new orleans in 97 to move to california to "Live Like A King." in 98, does that count?
Not to mention I moved here for the great herbs. If anything, Amsterdam I suppose. Or france.

go to the czech republic, hungary, or some of the other former eastern block countries (slovenia comes to mind too). $500-$2000 a month and you'll live like a king (depending on what your definition on living like a king is). ask charly - wasn't he in the czech r.? i'd say prague is the best place to live in europe right now (and maybe the world too).

The average person in India makes less than $200/month, so I would think that if you were making a few thousand $$$ a month then you would be doing well compared to others around you.
You might save some money because living expenses might be a little cheaper, but you would have to live in a shithole with massive poverty everywhere and very poor sanitary conditions. In my opinion, you might as well just move to a really cheap area of the US, if all you're interested in is saving money on living expenses.

The average person in Afganistan makes about $200 a year, but that doesn't mean I would want to live there.

I would have to say that one of the best places to live and work would have to be countries in the south pacific, especially Australia and New Zealand, but also Fiji and Indonesia.
In Oz and NZ, you can get some "cheap as chips" real estate right near the beaches, but you still get the bonus of living in a modern english speaking country with good net connections and broadband internet. In Fiji or Indonesia, the real estate would be even cheaper, and you could live in tropical paradise, but the people don't necesarilly speak english and getting a reliable net connection could be a problem, but can be done.

Here's an example of "Health Tourism" Heart bypass operation in the USA -- surgeon only costs $50,000 -- not including room, anesthesiologist, medication, etc. Total cost of heart bypass in Costa Rica $15,000 all inclusive -- pre/post op expenses. I could go on and on about how much better their health care system is but nobody will read all of it anyway ;) |

We keep getting power cuts and the water when it runs is a funny colour, we have to boil it before we wash our clothes in it. It never stops raining except when it snows. The Internet connection is so slow it takes 5 minutes to refresh this page. I would love to live in lovely US of A if only my drug bust did not exclude me. You are so well off their you do not know how lucky you are. But if you insist on coming email me and I will get my "partners" to meet you at the airport. Boris and Sacha will pick you up and explain how things work here. |

it all depends on your definition of living like a king. of course if your imagination is too wild, the amount of money you'll need will be much higher (anywhere, not just in prague), but 2k/month in prague should ensure you a very comfortable lifestyle.

A decent one bed flat in Prague will cost you $1,000 a month. My mates live in a very nice modern 3 bed flat in a poor part of Prague and pay $1,500 a month. I was joking on the other post, I've actually wrote an article about it here, http://www.webmastervault.com/tip-content3.shtml Any one need any help coming here email me. |

an average middle to upper class family, both partners working, make around $1k a month here in Mexico (Merida), a manager does around $500 a month and a general manager will do up to $1k or more...
Now, it's possible to live a lot better than in the US with a lot less money, but living like a king is a bit harder than that... my suggestion, if you're making $5k+ on the internet, and your sponsors wire you the money, then move down here, you'll be kicking ass... here are some stats based on myself. rent $170 (nice 2 bedroom house on a cool neighborhood, private security) food ~200 month (2 persons) cable internet $80 a month (not as good as it should be, but it does the job) if you need more info, hit me up on ICQ 48690894 |

Hey Fly, great topic. Let me share my story:
A friend of mine recently moved to the Philippines citing the same reasons you guys discussed. I was thinking of following in his foosteps and going into semi-retirement in the Philippines. I checked it out and here's the report. Bottomline -- NOT a good idea if you're used to the US' standard of living. Housing costs: totally depends where you settle. If you want to live in Manila, I would suggest getting a place in Makati--the business district. This is probably the closest area to US living standards. The rest of Manila is smoggy, pothole strewn, flooded during the rainy season. Rent in Makati runs about $500 for a nice condo. But they are not that large. Very small space. I would say rent a house but this would take you out of Makati and most other areas are shitholes. Houses are larger but surrounding area is crap. If you choose to live in Cebu City [southern Philippines], then housing selection is better and cheaper. There are nice 3 bedroom houses for rent at less than $200 a month. The environment is better in this part of the country. Food: If I was to live in the PI I would definitely hire a maid/cook to cook food. Home prepared food is cheap--about $1.20 or less for meat and vegetables are cheap. Maids charge about $20 per month. If you eat out, then you might as well stay in the US. The philippines is host to tons of fast food outlets, pricing is lower than that US but high enough that it can negate any savings you may enjoy by moving to the Philippines Crime: Foreigners should stay away from Palawan and Mindanao, unless you like getting beheaded by local Muslim fundamentalists. Other than that, watch out for scamsters [mostly in the form of taxi drivers and horny bargirls that want you to take them out] Manila is extremely crowded and dirty. Try Cebu, its cleaner and people seem more sincere. Internet connection: DSL is available in Manila and Cebu. Fairly good reliability. Quote:

It's possible to live very nicely in Jamaica. I was in Negril and you can rent whole houses there near the beach for only $250 US. The internet connection is decent since there are tourists there. They even have a few internet cafes. I would only try living in Montego Bay or Negril to get anywhere near US standards.
There's also a white boy who lives down there and hangs out with the ganja farmers and sells ganja videos. I met him while i was down there. His website is at http://www.rastajohn.com The only thing I hated in jamaica was the roads. They drive way too fast around winding hilly roads and I don't think my nerves could deal with that. Plus they drive on the left side of the roads and their steering wheels are on the right. I would fear a car crash especially since their hospitals aren't near the quality of the US. Plus if you're white, you're going to get treated differently everywhere that you go and you'll only be really accepted by other American Ex-patriates. If you're black, you stil will not be fully recognized but you'll be a whole lot closer to the real jamaica than the white man ever will. Other than that, I could buy pounds of Ganja for a few dollars, there's also plenty of cocaine if you like that. I had plenty of fine jamaican big booty hoes around that will do almost anything for under $100 US. And if I wasn't so lazy, I could have eaten very cheaply if I was willing to buy and cook my own food. Plus you could bring in a few girls from other countries and pimp them out to the american tourists for extra cash ;) But even if I was in a paradise, I'd still miss america. Even though they have Kentucky Fried Chickens and Burger Kings, I'd still be homesick. There's no place like america. I'd get tired of all of those fuckin jamaicans up in my face day after day or any other group of foreigners for that matter. But all in all, if you want to move out of the country and don't have any kids yet, Jamaica would be a good option. Bottom line is if you decide to move out of the country, you not only need money to live when you're there, you need extra money to fly you and your family back and forth if there is ever a family emergency, you need extra health insurance, you need a car, and little shit that costs a fortune overseas like toilet paper and razor blades. Plus you have to train your stomach to deal with all of the new bacteria of the country. A good alternative would be to move to the virgin islands or puerto rico and just keep a po box and bank account in the bahamas or belize. I've been thinking about retiring to the caribbean and not working since I was a young child so believe me, I've put a LOT of thought and have done a decent amount of travel to explore my opportunities. |

well, not exactly as TheFly said, i didnt move to Greece, but was born and live here. A webmaster living in Greece has both advantages and disadvantages like any country.
Net connection is a serious problem, you can't have better connection than dual isdn and it's fucking EXPENSIVE. The good is this is gonna change on september when adsl will be available to all major cities. Mail post is not bad at all and rarely i face problems with lost checks. It's not advisable to come from another country to live here and start stating your income since taxation is about 40%. Cars have double price than the rest countries and gas is very expensive. Healthcare is good and is provided even to people that can't afford it. According to the reports that E.U. announced this week, we have the lowest criminal rate between european countries. This is due to the fact that poverty is low and there are almost no homeless people. If you have money to spend, then you can consider yourself living in a small paradise. Wages are low and prices on products very good. Personally I know some webmasters that moved from their country to another one. Working on the web gives you the UNIQUE opportunity to work from every place on earth you want. People, we are fuckinh LUCKY having this opportunity. I hope in the near future to travel in some countries abroad. A webmaster can be a real world traveler, which is something hard to achive, unless you work for National Geographic hehe |

both partners making a combined amount of $1K a month can hardly be considered a middle/upper class family. $2K to $3K is more accurate.. you can afford private schools for the kids and a beautiful place in a nice neighborhood.... but $1K a month? no way!... I spend that amount on my fish tanks and clothes alone. |
