I believe Canadian's are patriotic, but we're just not as vocal about it. Walk down your street and tell me how many American flags are hanging in the yards in your neighborhood.

I'd probably have to walk 10 blocks in every direction to find just 1.

The thing that made me first notice American patriotism was the Major League Baseball All-Star game right after the first Gulf War started. When whoever was signing sang, "Our flag was still there," the place erupted to the point where you couldn't hear the rest of the song. It was literally spine tingling.

When they sing the National Anthem up here, we can't even stand up because we're drunk from all the beer we've drank before the game. BUT, it is CANADIAN beer. See, we're just patriotic in different ways.

You want to see some real crazy patriotism? Go to a Yankees/Red Sox game, haha. New Yorkers probably have more pride than anybody I've ever come across. I have a friend from New York and he's always talking about how great it is, haha.

By the way, this Canadian fight thread is awesome. Its like the North vs South!

What i understand is that you talk to couple of United Staters that came to Montreal and where lost cause of the french signs.

When you quote a message quote it right. Breaking my post in your quote is pretty lame of you.

Here's another one for the cause.

Did you see any of the Edmonton Oilers playoff games?

This is a very strange thread - I have always considered Western Canadians to be much more "patriotic" than their Eastern counterparts - usually because of the lack of difference in the general population - a very whitebread community. Maybe living in the US has given you a different outloook on things but I think that might change the longer you live there.

Yeah, I saw the playoff games and if anything it looked like Oiler fans were trying to outdo someone more than they were being patriotic imo.

If I ever move to and live in the US, I'll let you know though.

Question: If tomorrow you had a heart attack and ended up needing open heart surgery, how much would it cost in the US? I've heard that bypass surgery can run as high as $250K.

Here it would be free.

"Better" is very subjective. :D

If it was urgent, as in life threatening, it would be done immediately...or as soon as they could dogsled the surgeon in.

If it's NOT urgent, the wait could be a while yes.

That's because you're in my neck of the woods.

The Gulf Coast area is great. It's clean here, the people are friendly, there's low crime, the weather is great, and it's ridiculously cheap to live. I don't know how you can handle all that snow up there!

Plus, we have lots of locally grown oranges and fruit, for superior juicing. You'll never get that in Canada. Just crepes poutine. Whatever the hell that is.

you like america because youre not from here. this place sucks, stupid laws.

we have mexicans. :\ not that they are bad, but it seems that there isn't a mexican under 18 who does not tag, drink, smoke dope, or commit violent crimes.

and its even worse the police thing... who in the fuck ever though of giving them guns... police are the last people who should have guns, they are too unstable, and are trained to be control freaks. where is the logic in training someone to strongarm a person, and giving them a gun?

either way, canadas better, any america should be able to tell you that.

maybe things will get better when we have jerry seinfeld as president. lmao

Honestly, I've been to Montreal twice and the people were great. Some of them told me that if I were to have gone to Quebec City however, I may not have been as welcome.

I used to work on the open heart surgery ward at the St Boniface hospital here in Winnipeg. The wait wasn't all that long for most patients, and if your situation was immediately critical there was no wait at all. All cases are prioritized here, based on severity, not on how much cash you're able to scrape together.

Thank you. Exactly my point.

Free healthcare my ass, it isn't free. You pay STUPID amounts of taxes to have it.

And all it does is treat crackwhores in ER, serve as an old age house and put people who need livers on 10 year wait lists, effectively killing more people than they save.

Worthless.

good points, people love to turn this into a "i hate canada" thread but it is not, the oppurtunities america provided for my dad alone is enough for me to love this country.

in canada we have alot of asians and you will find them commiting the same amount of crimes as the mexicans do. im sure any place in the world has crime that is majority done by a certain group just how it is.

Also, beer and hockey are NOT national proud points.

If all you can say is "Our beer is better" that does NOT make Canada a better country. I grew up there and I can tell you that the US beats out Canada in every department.

Brad you are right here, FREE HEALTHCARE IS A MYTH, you make up for it in taxes as brad said.

it is always abused, the lines are long and you constantly have the have nots abusing the system, it is terrible. it causes people to go to the hospital for the smallest things.

I kind of enjoy living in the US. Although in recent times things have been a little rough for our government (whether they caused part of the issues is not any of my worry), I am proud to be an American citizen... however, there are plenty of times when I wish I was visiting or temporarily living elsewhere.

Canada seems cool from what I have read about it, but I do not think I would be too much of a fan of the cold weather. It would make me a little depressed to wake-up each day and know that swimming outside wasn't on the agenda.

Not true. Perhaps you haven't heard of the Okanagan Valley and the Niagara region? Both are huge fruit growing areas up here.

There are plenty of markets offering locally-grown fruits and veggies right here in Manitoba. I can think of about a dozen places within an hour of here where people can pick fresh strawberries by the pail.

We're not hurting for food up here.

As for snow, how the hell you going to have a decent snowball fight without winter? :D

I can say, with all honesty, that I love Canada, Vancouver specifically.

If I could live there 6 months, and 6 months down here as a Snowbird in Florida, I would.

"Better" is very subjective. :D
Here's another side-

My father passed away in May from a very aggressive type of brain tumor, which happens to be the most common form of brain cancer. I live *far* away from the Canadian border, but for six weeks, I sat in a radiation waiting room every day with people from Canada who either had money, or had sold their houses, cars, etc. to come here for treatment.

With this type cancer, you need an MRI every 4-8 weeks to be able to determine what treatment is working and adjust it accordingly. The Canadians told us they were lucky if they got ONE.

And the most amazing part of all to me- they would get to the hospital for their chemo and would be told, "Sorry, you can't have your treatment. We don't have any beds. Go home and we'll call you if something opens up in a few days."

I think public health is probably great if you're uninsured or for minor illnesses, but I would never want to be in that position if I had a major or life threatening illness. Just my

And no way is your fruit better.

I can assure you I pay no more taxes than most US citizens. With business exemptions and writeoffs I have gotten a refund every year for the past 9 years consistently. People in the higher brackets are paying in the 40 percentile range. As someone in the US who grossed over $500K last year whate % they paid in taxes, the answer will surprise you.

That is simply a retarded argument when comparing health care systems.

The real fact comes out in examples. Take my mother for example... she had an extended stay in the hospital a few years ago. Two months to be exact, lots of tests, lots of therapies etc. When she was wheeled down to the front door on the day of her discharge she was handed NO bill of any kind.

Tell me... how much would a 2 month stay cost in your typical US medical facility?

Argument over as far as I'm concerned.

False, Quebec City is a tourist city... Checkout virtualtourist.com.. no one is complaining...

You see, Metaman is just a keyboard agitator.. talking out of his drunk ass as always.. He listens to various redneck radio talk shows in Calgary, hating Quebec all day long, and then believes that everything that is said is true and that everyone outside of Alberta share the same opinion...

I'm not in MS. Are you in the south part or anywhere near the 10? I also may be going to Destin on Sunday for a few days.

I'm surprised you can even find NFL hats down here. If it ain't college ball, no one cares.

edit: FUCK! Are you on bellsouth?? Either it's my isp or this shitty ass board but I can't get anything to post half the time and it keeps timing out on me.

But that's the neat part of it up here, that we have the best of both worlds. When needed we CAN go south and pay if that's what the person thinks they need to do. Many of your hospitals are equipped with MRI's, but like I said... people's cases are prioritized by severity. Yes there is a waiting list for certain things, and when that becomes a pain in the ass for someone they are free to head south and pay.

Ask yourself this though..... how many Americans also have had to sell their homes, possessions etc just to pay for their medical care? We've certainly seen enough folks on this board post that they need donations to help with their hospital bills over the years, ALL of them US citizens. I don't recall seeing even one Canadian on here asking (or begging) for donations for medical care... now why is that?

And my sister-in-law recently battled cancer here. She was diagnosed nearly 3 years ago, and her treatment (and recovery) has been, according to her, quite excellent. She confirms what I know first-hand having worked in the system for 15 years.... that we have it pretty good here. I can't speak for all provinces in Canada, I've lived here in Manitoba all my life. But I'll stack it up against anywhere in the world anytime.

And I never said our fruit was better than yours. We import too, so it's every bit as good though. :D

Being self-employed I do carry some critical illness insurance, but it's a mere $50 per month... and that covers me in case I ever do have to "head south" for paid health care.

No ego here Bradski... but you're right, you like your deal, and I like mine. I just won't sit by and let someone rag on mine when they obviously have the facts skewed, that's all.

Cheers.

Here's the part most people forget to tell you when they're bitching about healthcare here. We DO have free public healthcare. It's called Medicaid. And people get excellent treatment at top notch facilities with it. No waiting or bullshit. Of course, it's for the poor/low income.

For the rest, you either have a job that provides it, or there IS health care coverage available. When people claim they can't "afford" health care here, what they usually mean is that when they decide how big of a mortgage they can afford, car payment they can handle, vacations they will take, toys they will buy, they don't budget health care into the equation. They would rather have their beer, cigarettes, big screen tvs, or whatever else they think is more important.

Not only can you get it, it's a small price to pay for the superior and excellent treatment you'll get.
