I can't stand people who sell domains.

Well not everyone, the small guy with the ok domains who post on here are usually easy to deal with.

The people who auction decent names, $1,000+++ 9 out of 10 times it is worse then dealing with used car salesmen. These people, and their dumb ass "apprasials" always think their domains are worth about 10x more then what they are.

I love the " make me an offer" and you reply back with a fair offer, say $10,000 and they tell you " you are crazy, i have someone offering me $200,000" and you lknow they are full of shit. And the assholes who run auctions and close them early. The people who agree to sell to you then cancel last minute. Jesus, no wonder i keep buying $10 domain names from the register.

I have never dealt with a more deceptive, lieing, pain in the ass, ignorant group of people.... domain sellers (in general) are whole nother breeed.

And i am not just talking ebay, damn there is a lot of idiots on there trying to sell shit for crazy prices, but even some of the guys who do this for a living. I never forget an idiot i tried to buy bourbonstreet.com from 2 years ago. He had it on auction, i was high bidder at 13,000. he said no thanks, business.com (or something like that) sold for 10,000,000 so he should get at least 7 figures! That he would sell it to a hotel on bourbon, etc. So much for that idea, Look what he is doing with the domain . www.bourbonstreet.com what a moron.

I hate these guys... i might be a little off base but i am being honest.

The craziest thing is... "This domain has so much potential. If it was developed it would be worth tons." Yep, so would qwertywashere.com. What is the point? You are selling the current stream of type ins or the ease of the name. Sorry you do not get a big bite of what I want to do with it because I am a nice guy.

Heyyyyy! I got this 50k worth domain yesterday. Its incredible!!!!

- So which one is it says his friend.

Its frequencymodulationradio.com, same as fmradio.com

Domain sellers are nice if you can't come up with a nice name for your site yourself But beside that they are asking way too high prices.

Just like sellers, there's also a wide range of buyers. There's the buyer like some of you who couldn't see the real value of a good domain name if it hit you between the eyes. Hell, you'd miss it if it kept bashing your head in.

The good domains you might be talking about, on bourbonstreet.com level for example at least, are worth a great amount to the right buyer.. just like real estate. The domain owner had some foresight to locate and purchase some property before you did because he saw value in it for investment purposes or future development purposes. Some are quick to develop, and others don't for one reason or another. Not all names are worth only what current traffic or revenue brings. The seller would be an IDIOT to sell you a good name cheap just because it's not currently getting a lot of traffic or earning a lot. I've paid $10,000+ for names many times that weren't earning anything at all, or didn't receive more than 20 visitors per day.

Granted, many have big dreams for their little plot like some of the other examples given in this thread.

I hear ya

if there is a domain I really like and its some guy wanting a bullshit price for it.. I just search for very similar domains and pay 15 bucks on directnic....

Usually I can find something so close it would not have been worth paying the extra 1000 to 3000 extra.

Fact is that there are enough fools that are impressed by these idiots and as long as these guys succeed to sell , it wont stop .
If you want my option , any domain above 5 letters with a name that is not in the english vocabulary - doesn't worth the $5 registration fee , except few exceptions .

I would have to agree, many domainers operate with "There is a sucker born every minute" in mind... especially on here, where idiots try to sell domains that are not even worth the registration fee for $1k+...

Well,

I like the seller theory: this is a great domain, if you invest in it you will get back a lot of money.

Hell yea!, if I put 1 mil in advertising I get okasdfgo.com to rock in any domain I want, just common brand building ;).

Domains are brands - they can be built from ground using money and/or marketing so the 'it has potential' bullshit does not fly. The same would be to sell land in the middle of the desert. It has potential - all you need to do is build a highway and some casino's and you have the new Vegas! The only problem is that now it is in the middle of the fucken desert!

Yes, the entrance fee is low, and that means there are alot of scammers and kids in the domain business.

The worst are the cybersquatters who register domain names containing famous, registered, and distinctive trademarks. These thieves bring the heat down on all domainers and drive up all our legal costs.

That is a domain seller's moto. lol. " every domain name is worth a lot to t he right buyer". So they mark up the domain up 100x hoping the right idiot, err i mean buyer comes along. How many times does that happen ?

it's not really like realestate, unless if you trying to sell land on a toxic waste dump that can't be built on for 100 years. But i am sure there is the "right buyer " for that too.

I love the post on here too.

Someone selling domain, say " wetfreshteens.com " and they want $1000 for it and you get your standard " great domain" and " good luck on your sale" shit etc... harmless enough.

But what drives me crazy is when people start saying, great deal.... that is worth it, etc.. and the seller gets all pumped up, So you offer him $100 and he is like no way, it's worth 1000 and yet not one of those fools who pumped him up have 1,000 to their name muchless will they buy it. and then the thread usually dies out with the seller saying " still taking offers" " come on guys no one contacting me, it's still for sale" " this is a steal for 1000 bump for me" " hey this is still for sale why is no one buying " etc....

Classic.

By that time I will have spent all the money in a new foreign country that I moved to in order to hide.. Deal? lol

Well I understand your frustrations. But if a domain is paying for itself then there is no real reason to sell it unless the right offer comes along. My entire portfolio pays for itself and then some so Im not about to get low balled by anyone. Im in no hurry to sell. I'll sit on these things for the next 20 years if they keep making me money.

They don't have no cash or game, they are just holding out to make a bonus.. which most of the time never happens... They are just dreamers who have a list of what $ will be accepted for a certain name...

Thats true, I guess from the intial stages of talking to these people i really dont know if they actually own the domains or if they are trying to sell them for someone else.

Your entire portfolio pays for itself meaning, 10 good names pay for all 1,000 or whatever you own? or each individual one pays for itself ?

Do you price them high cause you don't need to sell them ? not sure what you are saying here/

I don't think domain name is as important as marketing. Take, for example, zappos.com. The name in itself means nothing. Yet it is near the top of the internet as far as traffic goes. They sell shoes. Shoes.com, on the other hand, has way less traffic and makes way less money than zappos.com

I think that a short name helps, but only to a very small degree. Not to say that some short, highly used words don't have some value, but a good marketing strategy can make an otherwise useless word into millions:

All of the following are in the top 100 internet sites:

Google
Ebay
Flickr
Orbitz
Xanga
Pogo
Icio

I think if (a few years ago) someone came in here and said "I'll sell you Xanga for $1000" that they would have had any takers.

All of those have the vowels in the right places.
Tough to brand ggtgl.com in peoples minds, but if it was gatal.com or something like that, it "sounds" right to the brain.

Does that make sense?

When I first read this thread, and read Zappos, never hearing of this domain before I thought shoes. I am not spanish but I know that Zapotas in spanish is shoe's.. So quite frankly your logic here is a bit flawed... It's not a name it's a brand, But we get the point.. All good companies have a reason for their brand name..

For example StarBucks actually comes from the classic american tale
Moby Dick.

Now think about that a bit, when you go to a bookstore, what is everyone doing... sitting around reading a book drinking coffeee.. You can bet this targetted crowd understood the name Starbucks right off the bat.

I agree that it helps tremendously that the name have "sylables", because we turn them into words. Of course it would be much tougher to market hfwqt.com , but I was just making the point that marketing beats word recognition.
