Since MP is easily removed even after the 3 day trial, someone should have told this guy that he only needed to go to the configuration panel, choose "software" and remove it

Phone Moviepass customer support on 866 431-7720 (001 866 431-7720 if calling from outside the US) and cancel your account. You may have to wait some time for your call to be connected. There's more about Moviepass customer support here. Once your account is cancelled go to 7.

STEP 7

Phoning Moviepass and canceling your account should stop the pop-ups. Some people have reported that the pop-ups have continued even after canceling their account. If you want to continue with the removal instructions then go to 9. If you're happy just to be rid of the pop-ups and don't wish to remove any programs and files that may be left behind then go to 8.

STEP 8

Switch your computer off then on again. If you got a pop-up when your computer started then go to 9, if there was no pop-up then you may choose not to proceed any further, in which case go to 33 or to manually remove any remaining traces of Moviepass go to 26.

STEP 9

At this point we'll try removing Moviepass using adware, spyware and anti-virus programs.

Adware and spyware removers are programs that scan all the files on your computer looking for unwanted and intrusive files. Usually such files are on your computer without your knowledge, some can be a minor irritation but others can be quite harmful. Go to 14.

STEP 14

Two of the most respected programs in the fight against adware and spyware are Lavasoft?s Adaware and Safer Networking?s Spybot Search and Destroy. The version of Adaware for personal use is free of charge and can be downloaded from Lavasoft (click the Personal Edition link on the menu). Spybot is free and can be downloaded from Safer Networking. Currently Google are offering Google Pack free of charge which includes Adaware, a six month subscription to Norton Anti-Virus and other products. You can find many adware, spyware and anti-virus tools at Tucows or Download.com. Once you?ve installed and run these programs go back to 11.

Try running a full anti-virus scan on your computer. Once done go back to 15.

STEP 17

In simple terms a computer virus is a potentially damaging program that lurks in your computer. It can do all manner of things depending on the purpose for which it was created. In the worst case scenario you could lose all the data on your computer or discover that everything you do online is being monitored ? including entering passwords, credit card details and other personal data. There are programs available which examine the files on your computer looking for viruses. You may already have such a program - popular ones include Norton (Symantec). McAfee, Trend Micro, eTrust, Microsoft One Care, Bitsoft Defender, Panda, Sophos, Kaspersky, Command, F-Secure, Gri-Soft, Zone Labs, Frisk, Doctor Web, Eset, SBC Yahoo, Sereniti, Avast, Ahn Lab, Earthlink Rising and AOL. If you have one of these programs go to 16 otherwise go to 18.

STEP 18

Good virus protection is essential. There are several anti-virus programs including Computer Associates, Panda, StopZilla, Norton (Symantec) and McAfee. The programs aren?t free but they do let you run a free scan of your computer and alert you if any viruses are found. Computer Associates have a variety of security products that you can try for free for a month. Several Internet Service Providers (ISP?s) now include some form of anti-virus software as part of their package. Currently Google are offering Google Pack free of charge which includes a six month subscription to Norton Anti-Virus. Once you?ve completed an anti-virus scan go back to 15, if you want to skip this stage go to 20.

STEP 19

Your spyware, adware or virus removing program will have deleted some of the files and programs that were installed on your computer but maybe not all of them. The files that have been deleted should ensure there are no more pop-ups and that you can work on your computer uninterrupted. If you want to manually look for and remove any traces that may remain then go to 26 otherwise, if you're happy to leave things as they are then go to 33.

STEP 20

We need to look at a different approach. Have you tried doing a system restore?

STEP 21

System Restore lets you restore your computer to a previous state, if a problem occurs, without losing your personal data files (such as Microsoft Word documents, browsing history, drawings, favorites, or e-mail). System Restore monitors changes to the system and some application files, and it automatically creates easily identified restore points. These restore points allow you to revert the system to a previous time. They are created daily and at the time of significant system events (such as when an application or driver is installed). Go to 22

STEP 22

Bear in mind that when you perform a System Restore you will lose any programs, updates and customizations that have occurred after the date of the system restore point. If the changes made to your computer since installing Moviepass can easily be redone, or you can make back-up copies of these files, then it?s advisable to perform a System Restore. If you want to skip the System Restore then go to 26 otherwise, to perform a System Restore go to 23.

STEP 23

To access the System Restore Wizard, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore. Follow the instructions in the System Restore Wizard to restore your computer to a date prior to when Moviepass was installed. The pop-up window you receive from Moviepass will tell you the installation date. Once completed go back to 20.

STEP 24

Having run System Restore all traces of Moviepass should have been removed from your computer. You need to reinstall any other files and programs that have been deleted then restart your computer. Once done go to 33.

STEP 25

System Restore should have removed all traces of Moviepass, if you're still getting pop-ups there are two possible reasons. The first is that the date you chose for the System Restore Point was a date after Moviepass had been installed, in which case you need to check the date of installation (shown on the pop-up window) and perform another system restore but this time choosing an earlier date; when you've done this go back to 20.

The other possibility is that Moviepass has installed itself in such a way that even performing a system restore doesn't remove the files. To date this has not been the case and System Restore has successfully removed Moviepass. If you're certain the System Restore Point you chose was a date prior to the installation of Moviepass then reinstall any other programs and files that may have been deleted and go to 26.

For each instance you come across you need to click on the name, this will highlight the entire line. Click on the End Process button, you'll get a warning message, click on Yes. Don't worry if you accidentally end the wrong program, the worst that's going to happen is you'll need to restart the program or restart your computer (nothing's getting deleted at this stage, just stopped).

When every instance of the above processes has been stopped then close Windows Task manager and go to 27.

STEP 27

Now that the various Moviepass programs have been stopped we can start to delete the programs. Click on the Start button, click on Control Panel then click on Add or Remove Programs. A long list of the programs that are installed on your computer should appear, it may take a little while to 'populate' the list.

You need to look through the list for anything that resembles the following, there could be any number of these listed (there might not be any) and you need to remove all instances that you find. The actual names may or may not have spaces in them, there may be underscores (_), hyphens (-), tildes (~) and numbers in the name, there may be variations with lowercase and uppercase and there could be variations with the names themselves...

For each instance you come across you need to click on the name, this will highlight it. Click on Change/Remove and confirm you want to uninstall. It's possible something will appear called an Uninstall Shield Wizard, if this happens just follow the instructions it presents you.

One of three things is going to happen at this point...

The program will uninstall, in which case click Close and continue working through the list above. When you can't find any more programs then go to 30.
*

You get an error message saying the program is in use or some other reason why it can't be deleted. Go to 28
*

You got taken to the Moviepass website. Go to 28

STEP 28

This happens because one of the Moviepass programs is still running. You need to go back to 26 and double check that all the processes have been stopped. If you're certain they have been then go to 29.

STEP 29

You need to restart your computer in Safe Mode. This means that only the essential programs are running, none of the Moviepass programs should run and you will be able to delete them. To start in Safe Mode...

Restart your computer and as it's starting up press the F8 key repeatedly until a black screen with white text appears. Select the Safe Mode With Networking option and press Enter. Another screen will appear, select your usual operating system from the list (usually there's only one thing on the list) and press Enter again. Ignore all the stuff that flashes up on the screen and wait for the Windows Login screen to appear (it will look different to normal). Login as Administrator or as a user who has administrator rights. You'll get a message advising that 'Windows is running in safe mode'. Click the Yes button. Don't worry that the screen looks different (it will revert back to normal next time you start the computer).

Go back to 27 and continue deleting all the programs listed.

STEP 30

Nearly there. What we're going to do now is to remove the remaining Moviepass files. Open My Computer (click on Start then My Computer), Double click the icon for Local Disk (C

, if the main drive on your computer has any letter other than C then click the appropriate icon, e.g. Local Disk (D

. Double click on Program Files. If there's a message saying "These files are hidden" then click Show the contents of this folder.

That?s it - the end. If you haven't already done so then close down all programs that are running and restart your computer. Hopefully your computer is restored and you can get on with things without being pestered by demands for money.

Finally, make sure you have adware, spyware and virus protection and that it's up to date (see steps 14 and 18 above of the banners below).

No, those are not the official instructions. These are the instructions by a third party on how to get rid of their software. The official instruction, after the trial expires, is "Pay us money and we will stop harassing you with popups. If you don't, we may well take legal action against you."

Of course, moviepass is actually also movieland*, and movieland is mediapipe. Mediapipe has been clearly and often identified as badware:
