Yes, the tease is probably part of the reason to have an undisclosed reserve. To protect your assets as a "stop loss" is also important. To get people to bid freely without artificial barriers is yet another.

To answer your second part about fairness: fairness is in part determined by bidders having the same information, at least the material facts. So we try not to show favoritism. Maybe it is just a token gesture, but that's the way it is.

winning auctions on ebay is difficult enough when you've a budget to stick to, so having a reserve makes it twice as difficult to win. if the seller won't reveal the reserve in auctions like that, I lose interest. never mind.

If you have a budget, this domain is probably not for you.

It's for an adult company with some money, probably a California adult company.

But, who knows? If you can afford a "nice" new car, you can possibly buy this domain. You never really know who's got the green stuff to plunk down. The reserve is not an outlandish number. I promise.

The big thing to keep in mind: how hard is it to sell beautiful young California Coeds to horny web surfers? Add in the gorgeous scenery of many California campuses.. and you've got a possible homerun with a worldwide market.

This domain should be a slam dunk for anyone who's got game.

Heck, it could become the rare kind of adult website where members would want to maintain a continuous membership.

With all this in mind, maybe I'll signup as an affiliate. I really like the idea of all those potential rebills!!

;)

It is a great brandable name. Sometimes, it's what you do with a name, not the name itself that matter. Ain't that right, Big Daddy? :D

Thanks.

Yes, CaliforniaCoeds.com is brandable and would make a great site.

Something like this would have a good shot at attracting the mainstream media too, and that would bring in a ton of members.

Remember Voyeur Dorm? That was a huge news story, especially in its home state.

Less than 8 hours to go in the eBay auction.

If you want to own this domain, start bidding soon.

Yea. Most auctions get the heavy bidding in the last hour, or even last few minutes.

It will be interesting to see if any big pimp wants to own this domain. Lensman, where are you?

There is no good reason for having an undisclosed reserve. If you r reserve is 20k then start the bids at 20k. What good are the 50.00 bids if you have a high reserve?

eBay buyers are going to spend within 5-10% of their comfortable limit anyway. If you have a "secret reserve" price I promise you the 305.00 bidder is not suddenly going to enter a 25k bid.

Not starting the bid at your reserve price simply makes no sense to me.

i think supply and demand (which an ebay auction proves) is about to show you that the domain isnt worth as much as you claim. you cant get a better supply and demand figure than what it goes for on ebay.

As I have said before, the reserve is no big secret. It's approximately the cost of a nice new car: nothing super fancy, but no rust bucket either.

If you start an auction with a high opening bid, often you get no bids. So, I would rather see a little action, even if it falls short in the end.

actually i don't know why would someone sell a domain on ebay

neither most domainers nor end-users as Lensman spend their time there looking for domains

there are better options, like sedo, afternic, dnforum, gfy.com ;-) etc

"Proving people wrong" seems to be the unofficial sport of GFY.

I don't put much stock in eBay as an appraisal service. eBay isn't the greatest for selling domains. eBay is ideal for collectibles and consumer goods.

Domains are a business infrastructure item, more B2B oriented than consumer oriented. Frankly, there really is no good place to sell domains. Domains are very specialized, and marketing them in such a place as eBay is usually a mismatch.

This subject domain has value, and one option is just to hold it. If it doesn't sell today, maybe someday it will generate more interest.

anyway, i dont get it why this thread got so big
not only it's in the wrong forum, but the domain isnt THAT special either

i guess it's because the thread starter considers himself an old-timer or player in the domain biz...
i could see some newb with 85 posts selling this domain for 5-figures here and all he'd get would be 50 posts Manowar style ;)

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

If you think coed is a lucrative niche, and that perhaps the Golden state of California has some mystique for people around the country and even around the world, and California has some gorgeous beaches and campuses, and this domain is catchy and marketable and alliterative, well, then, just maybe... it IS special after all. If your porn company is located in California, that might be even better.

OK, let's assume I am a noobie. But Steve Lightspeed isn't a noob, and in which niche did he make his money?

;)

I don't understand the purpose of having a reserve instead of a minimum bid.

We spend about $200k a year on domains and I'm interested in the domain but having undisclosed reserves just strikes me as "playing games". If you want $20k for it, anybody who can afford a domain at $20k would not be put off by that asking price.

Thanks.

There is no game playing. Just bid what it is worth. If it makes you feel any better, the numbers you are throwing out aren't far off.

It might be wise to make a softcore porn site like Girls Gone Wild. GGW's positioning of itself just shy of hardcore has helped it get alot of mainstream media attention, including its omnipresent late night TV ads.

You rake it in..

Now there's less than 1 hour left in the eBay auction!

If you want this domain, it's time to pull IT out and slap IT on the table:

By the way, I bid on this auction and immediately after the auction ended I got a storm of mail with other domain for sale offers. I am pretty sure tha the only person with access to message bidders is the seller.

You would not know anything about this would you Daddy?

LOL anyhow, while you are reading this DHB, what do you do with your traffic domains while you are waiting on a buyer? If you have any dating / adult related ones with traffic I might have something for you that works out a lot better than those parked pages.

That goes for anyone btw.

Just like I said, $500 to $1,000. The highest bid was $1,025. Looks like I was right on the money, Mister "I have 20,000 domains and know the market better than you and think this is a mid 5 figure to low 6 figure domain".

1. I don't send spam. Lookup the owner of the domain that the spammer offered you. All my domains are registered in the real name of my company. If the WhoIs doesn't say my company's name, that domain isn't ours. Period.

2. I don't shill. Never have, never will.

3. Some of my pages may be weak on design, but that ain't a crime. I am always open to new ideas and suggestions. I am working with a new designer, and I have a big stack of work.

If you have a shred of evidence to support these absolutely absurd accusations, post away.

If not, then STFU!

Not hittin' even close. You are way way way off. You are in the other county.

The best example of how far off you are...is your METHOD of valuation. Valuation by comparable sale requires 2 parties, in an arm's length transaction, to conclude a transaction (a sale).

To refresh you: the seller (me) never accepted the high bid, which never reached the pre-set reserve.

Your method of valuation is totally wacky.

For an extreme example: if I make an offer of $100 for your house, it doesn't mean your house is only worth only a hundred bucks. It only means that someone OFFERED such an amount --which doesn't mean much.

Now, the good news. The auction did whip up alot of interest. I am negotiating now with a few companies.

You were 100% accurate on this one, Donny!

I was agreeing with you on page 1 and didn't click the link yet... I click the link and see that it is as you fortold.. Good work

To the seller, you are high man!

There is a BIG difference between dirtbike.com and californiacoeds.com...

One is instantly brandable in mainstream markets... Newspaper, TV, radio... The other is not. So it is not worth more than $2000 tops...

Are you sure you didn't use to offer a "seed" bid at afternic for your listed domain names . . . years ago (before you knew better)?
