Vegetarians please helpme understnad...

... You dont eat meat yet eat soy hamburger patties, you dont eat chicken yet eat tofu chicken nuggets, same with tofu-rkey, and soy cheese. If you crave the taste of a food why not eat the real thing? I know for a fact that this stuff does not taste the best, I cant tell you how many times i see our resident vegetarian throw her veg food away.

Most vegetarians don't eat meat for religious, ethical, medical, and/or nutritional reasons, not for the best taste.

I've been a vegitarian for 16 years. Ever since I can remember, eating meat grossed me out. 16 years ago, there wasn't any veggie hamburgers, etc.
I ate pizza, pasta and cheese sandwiches. These days, I like to think I'm also a lot healthier for it. But that's not the reason I gave up meat (red meat, chicken and fish). I guess I just don't agree with the slaughtering methods.
Oh, and I LOVE Morningstar Farms products. Their Chik Patties do taste better than that Mechanically Separated Chicken Patty crap. Atleast that's what my friends say.

Vegetarians don't eat pigs and cows for the same reason most of you don't eat cats and dogs. Simple, really.

So I'm assuming it has to more to do with a learned behavior then, as most of us are raised on beef, chicken, and pork. I would guess that those that grow up eating dog meat dont see it as gross.

Some "health nuts" take lots of supplements, in addition to being vegetarian. You probably associate the two things because of that, but supplements aren't necessary for a vegetarian. Also, up until maybe 20 years ago, current nutritional theory suggested vegetarians needed carefully balanced combinations and ratios of different amino acids (building blocks of protein), but that theory has been largely discredited. For vegans, who also don't eat dairy or eggs, calcium supplements are usually a good idea..

I've been a pseudo vegetarian (just eat fish) for about 6 years. I don't have any problem with other people eating meat, it just doesn't sit right with me ( in my head).

The way I justify it is like this: Anything that I would willingly kill myself in order to get the meal, I will eat. Anything that I wouldn't willingly kill myself in order to get the meal, I pass up.

Someday I might slaughter a chicken and then start eating chicken again.

I have no problem whacking little fishees agains the side of the boat, so I eat fish.

Some people don't understand this pholosophy, but it works for me. To each his own

-P

truth is, being on a mostly plant-based diet will promote longevity and good health.

do the research on it if you want.

also, it is true that the typical vegetarian diet will usually not be as palatable as a commercial (processed food diet). this is because the commercial diet is designed in the laboratory to taste good and SELL as it's main criteria, it is not specifically designed to be nutritious; and the commercial diet includes everything from breakfast cereal to pringles, from diet drinks, to ovaltine, and includes all sorts of healthy sounding adjectives in the packaging---again it is designed to sell---your health is an after thought and you will see this once you learn about nutrition, how to read labels, and wade through the marketing hype.

you cannot leave your nutrition to the vagaries of the marketplace---what tastes great might not be so good for you...decide, when you want a late night snack---will it be microwave popcorn (full of salt and saturated fat and tasting SO fucking good) or a fairly bland apple or an orange.

there are huge health benefits if you can go to a (mostly) plant-based raw foods diet. do the research if you want.

ok sermon over, only a few of you will get this.

Not sure about "typical," but some sample entrees: pizza with mushroom and green pepper, a 7-layer burrito at taco bell, spaghetti and tomato sauce with mushrooms, mac & cheese, eggplant parmigiana, fettucini alfredo, an egg salad sandwich, grilled cheese sandwich, veggie lasagna, quiche lorraine, vegetable fried rice, vegetable stew, pad prig pao with tofu (thai), palak paneer (indian), bi bim bop with tofu (korean), spanikotiropita (greek), falafel with hummos (middle eastern).

well, i don't know if this is typical vegetarian, but it is typical for me.

a nice vegetarian low fat meatless chili with lots of flavor:

1 can "chili" pinto beans, mixed with one can mexican style stewed tomatoes, 5 rykrisp with a small piece of hard cheddar cheese, tossed green salad with paul newman vinegrette dressing, water, and coffee.

desert: a navel orange.

about 550 calories total, lots of fiber, and filling.

there is no way you can get "too much protein" from your diet... and its impossible for a vegan to get too much protein in their wildest dreams. you can't even get enough without really understanding the quantities of essential amino acids in different foods and what quantities of each you need to combine for optimum conversion to protein. vegetable proteins are the poorest choice

and latinasojourn - not eating the typical american high, saturated fat diet will help you lead a longer/healthier life. you absolutely cannot prove that being a vegetarian is a heathier choice than simply choosing a well balanced diet. the fact of the matter is that your body is designed to eat meat... and has been eating meat for 10's of millions of years (or a few thousand for you dumb fucking jehovas witnesses out there)

well what you say is true, i'm not trying to prove anything, and i'm not 100% vegetarian.

but i will be 56 years old in 3 weeks, i have a flat belly and i can jog 10 miles in less than one hour nonstop, i can ride a bicycle about 25 miles nonstop, and i'll bet few here can do that, very few.

diet and exercise. i believe it is valuable to good health, and improves the quality of life, that is my only point.

to each his own.

About 9 months ago I went Vegan. that means no meat, no dairy and if you are being hardcore no sugar either. that really cuts down what you can eat. You eat a lot of fuit, veggies and nuts. Nothing that has sugar in it so no sweets, pop things like that. I sometimes ( about once a month ) will have something with sugar in it like ice cream or a candy bar. It usually makes me sick but I like the taste

There is a misconception about protien. A lot of people think you need 100's of grams of protien in your diet. That is not the case. Between the vegies, nuts, soy milk and some of the whole grain breads I get more than enough protien. If I wanted to pack on muscle I would have to eat more, but for a normal person that goes to the gym 4 times a week and has a normal life I get plenty.

It was the best thing I've ever done in my life. Without counting calories or anything I dropped 65 lbs. I feel better then I can ever remember feeling and have more energy then ever before.

Most people who eat a lot of meat, especially red meat, will have anywhere fomr 4-7 lbs of undigested meat in their stomach and intestines. This clogs you up and hurts digestion. Also most meat that is in the US ( and I would guess many other countries ) is packed full of hormones to help it grow bigger and faster. Those hormones stay in the meat and go into any milk and dairy that may come from those cows and they are not good for you.

As for dairy, milk should not be drank by adults. It's simple cows milk has one reason in this world. It is to take a 50lbs calf and make it a 300 lbs cow as soon as possible. If the cow was meant to contiune on the milk they would nurse forever. same with humans. Mothers nurse the baby to a certian age and then cut them off. Why do you think there are so many people who are lactose intollerant?

But enough of a rant. I like the taste of meat. There are few better things in the world than a nice braut and a cold beer or some nice BBW ribs. But in the end I can live without them if it helps me be healthier in the long run.
