You guys are all missing the fucking point on why we requested they be moved in the first place.....they refused to admin a server because of a late payment...that,in turn, prompted us to move the servers to SI......because that simply would not have happened because of an oversight.....we felt wronged for lack of service and decided to stop doing biz with phatservers....when told them we were going to stop service the servers were pulled....pretty fucking black and white... you need to see the whole picture...that is all......no ICQ logs needed....

oh yeah....101!!!

We were asked to take the servers offline today by someone at epic named Ethan, so we complied.
Here is the log of the convo if your guy Ethan failed to show it to you between your tech and one of mine:

[10:44] EMG Ethan: Hello Chris
[10:44] prodiac: hows it going
[10:44] EMG Ethan: It's going ok, how are you?
[10:44] prodiac: alright
[10:45] EMG Ethan: I wanted to arrange for Joel to pick up that server again...
[10:45] EMG Ethan: actaully both servers
[10:46] prodiac: Okay, will you be cancelling service?
[10:46] EMG Ethan: Yes, but not until we pay the bill
[10:47] EMG Ethan: I assume the billing problem has been worked out, right?
[10:47] prodiac: I dont have that information, Jim talked with Billing, thats all I know, but I will find out information on if anything needs to be done before the servers are picked up, and I will get back to you shortly
[10:47] EMG Ethan: Ok, thanks Chris
[10:50] prodiac: Okay we will remove them and give them to the noc guys at the datacenter with instructions to provide them to Joel when he comes, I will let you know when they are ready for him.

At this point we removed the server like requested.

Now does this look like anything that was posted?
, nicely owned
phatservers are great

You can unplug a unix machine from the wall, it doesn't mean shit. Unplug it, shut it off, shut it down, unix doesn't give two rats ass. How do you "carelessly" unplug a server? Do you kick the cord out of the wall?

Why didn't the tech ctrl+alt+del then power down? That way the box would properly shutdown.

If these were BSD boxes powering them down improperly is a huge no-no, as I'm sure you guys are aware.

What data? I have a unix machine about 3 feet from me, I can unplug it, fire it back up, and no data is going to be lost.. This isn't a windows machine man, it's a unix machine.

Yes, it should be shut down the correct way, but it won't fuck anything up.

Erm, wrong. If you power down a unix box without unmounting properly, you will risk almost certain corruption of some files. If you're lucky, they'll be unimportant or reparable. Thats why fsck runs, and calls a fs "dirty" when you boot up the box next time.

I used to have my server at a fucked up company called NectarTech, run by complete incomps, my server was always down, like at least once a week, so I got sick of arguing with the tech guy over there (plus he kept lying about stupid shit), and decided to move my server to Reflected.net. (hasn't been down in over a year now). Anyway,NectarTech put a block on my server so Reflected couldn't transfer the files. Luckily the guys at Reflected are fucking brilliant, and found a way around it. I also filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, they of course removed the block, but the files were already transfered so it was pointless.

Okay, first off you have no proof that they didn't shut the machines down the correct way. You have no idea how they shut them down at all. That is a fact unless I missed that post. Either way, you are still blowing smoke out of your ass about this, and you know it.

And yes, it "can" fuck a unix machine up, about as good as a chance as a windows machine being fucked up from an improper shut down. But, normally it doesn't do anything.

I can't prove what I say, just like you can't. But I would bet my BW/servers that PhatServers DID NOT shut your machines down due to non-payment.

So is the issue about the servers, the service, the techs, or pulling the machines? The idea/topic has changed directions like 10 times, not sure what the problem was now..

"powered down" does not mean unpluged.. Powerdown is a good term for shutting a machine down.

To be honest, its about everything. they totally mishandled this situation, and the situation we were in on xmas eve. they know they fucked up, and they know how it should of been handled, now I gotta waste someones time checking the servers for lost data and if I find out im missing some important information, then that just opens up a huge can of worms.

so you tell me christopher. If you server was just powered down 2 servers to be exact, and you might have lost data.. what would you do? bite the bullet or speak out?

quit kissing ass.... its not like you.

I'm not kissing ass, you are acting like an ass over something your staff fucked up on. I agree that Chris could have been a bit more clear, but the ICQ is pretty good proof that everything was taken care of in the eyes of phatservers and the machines would get taken down, as requested.

As requested.....

Trey, it's Chris btw, not Christopher Since we are using first names on GFY..

does taking the server down as requested say push the power button and risk losing data? or would a tech take that as properly shutting a server down the right way.

you do the math christopher. we requested them taken offline when paid, they were never paid, no reason to take them offline in the first place.. never the less they did, and they did it wrecklessly.

how can you ignore that? plus what Jim posted earlier.... whats your agenda christopher?

Could you quote the post that Chris said he "pushed the power button till the machine turned off" I seemed to have missed that post.

However, I did find..

"Root passwords did not work, and by the time they needed to come down Ethan was not around to provide them. The boxes were powered down. nothing "yanked"."

I never posted that I powered it off with the button, I told him on aim that it was powered off with the power button. Just as Moose had already posted in this thread.

I still would be upset my servers were down AFTER reading those logs. Put it like this, an employee says he wants to arrange for them to be moved AFTER the bill is paid. Even if you want to be nice and do it early you should check with someone to make sure they want them off right that minute. I don't know of anyone that wants their server laying around waiting on someone else to pick it up and put it back online. That leaves the obvious assumption that they should be turned off when someone is there to get them to minimize downtime.

You're obviously not running any servers that get written to frequently.

Try pulling the plug on a high traffic database server sometime.

One database entry is too much to neglect.

It's pretty clear to me that Phatservers phucked up and mishandled this situation.

You do understand that you should have done the exact same thing as you stated?

I have no reason to kiss phatservers ass, I do host with them, but I would be on your ass about anything this stupid, like I have done in the past.

Your guy was coming down to pick up the machine correct? Once Chris stated that he would take down the machines, why didn't your guy jump in and stop him? Why didn't you call and have them put back online? Why did you just call and find out what the problem was? ICQ them? Email them? Hell you could have even paid the bill that second if it really was the problem.

This works two ways, Chris could have waited, but if phatservers was fine with not getting the $300 first, then what the hell is the big deal? You have no idea if the machines were forced down, I'm sure no data was lost anyway and you are just blowing this up.

This is why I'm on this post, you are making yourself sound like an idot. You should leave and go have a few beers or something.

I'm out of beer :/

If anything this is a two way mistake, both of you should buck up, say your sorry, shake hands & kiss, and go have some beers together.

from what my boss tells me that in the years prodiac has worked for Splitinfinity he could not imagin that ever happening my boss also knows mike very well couldn't imagine them doing something like this but I have been asked to post the condition of the servers when I recieved them, I am happy to report there is no data loss however both servers did require rather long fsck's upon boot, which is evidence of improper shutdown, this might be a miscommuncation between both parties involved and i do not wish to be a part of that I am just posting what I saw and was asked to post.

peace to all and to all a good night

Now does this look like anything that was posted?
nothing like it

Another lesson...

Don't depend completely upon any one third party. Always assume they will fuck up or fuck you over. A simple human mistake or intentional act of sabotage could end up being damaging in ways that cannot be remedied by message board ranting and/or lawsuits.
