Be ashamed if you're from on of these countries:

"Governments have so far failed to respond to the urgent need for a one billion dollar UN global emergency fund for the recent crisis in Pakistan , according to a new briefing paper published by Oxfam International today."

"Greg Puley, Oxfam?s policy advisor, said that rich donor governments including the US, Belgium, Italy, France, Canada and Australia have so far failed to pledge a cent to the fund."

"Two weeks after the Pakistan earthquake, the UN is having to spend time begging for funds instead of being able to concentrate solely on saving lives"

"Only seven governments - UK, Sweden, Norway, Netherlands, Ireland, Switzerland and Luxembourg - have pledged money to date."

everyone stepped up to help with the tsunami but not this disastre? pretty sad

And how many muslims life in Pakistan?

If it would happen here or in Holland most of them would say it would be a punishment from Allah. They might not have the funds to give money if it would happen here but even if they had...there wouldn't be comming money from them our way.

Why focus just on that fund. The U.N.??? Baahh. Those countries that should be "ashamed" do a hell of a lot more for this world over all than Norway...

Let's talk about some of the things going on at the U.N. these days...

U.S. spends 0.12% of its GNP (or about $12 billion) on foreign aid, the stingiest of any major industrial country. Norway spends more than 1%...

Ashamed? Are you brain dead? The countries you mentioned are always giving it seems, always sending aid, supplies, support, all over the world continually.

What I want to know is, how much did countries like Korea, Syria, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Lebanon, Turkey, Peru, Columbia, Argentina and Chile donate?

Not everything is measured in pure dollars and cents. How much equipment and physical help does Norway provide anually? How much medical assistance and personnel.

This is an old tired argument that has been beat to death by you guys over there. Get over it. You should look up the definition of the word 'ashamed' moron. It does not apply to the type of response that these countries which you named send to disasters worldwide over and over and over, year after year.

That's exactly my point. Why can't we compare those countries to the others? Okay, a few of those that I mentioned did donate to the relief, but don't you wonder why a country like N. Korea, for example, is nowhere to be found when the world needs a helping hand? They can afford to buy multi-billion dollar reactors but they can't send a planeload of supplies to the quake zone? And they're not alone, there are several countries in the world with rich dictatorships who always want their voice to be heard loudly, but when the times comes to step up and set the example by sending aid all you hear is crickets chirping in their corner.

And this idiot has the gall to criticize the very countries that ALWAYS help?

Something or someone is braindead in this thread and I supspect it ain't me.

Being from the U.S Gulf Coast, and considering the magnitude of our own recent disasters in Katrina and Rita, and even more recently Wilma, sending millions in aid to foreign countries seems dumb when so many of our own citizens are displaced and in dire need of help at the moment.

EH what? "Two weeks after the Pakistan earthquake, the UN is having to spend time begging for funds instead of being able to concentrate solely on saving lives"

you saying that is false? U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan invited ministers to attend the conference in Switzerland on wednesday. Did that not happen?

STFU idiot!

The countries mentioned there donate BILLIONS of dollars to all these relief funds. Also i've seen countless advertisements for donations for the earthquake international cricket matches have been played in an effort to raise money from the general PUBLIC.

So STFU and pull your head out of the sand.

georgeyw: so if there are billions of dollars given to the relief fund of the UN that desperatly needs cash to help - explain to me why U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan invited ministers to attend the conference in Switzerland on wednesday begging for donations...

from the un's own site: "Yet, as each day reveals more acute needs, it is clear that the response provided so far is inadequate."

In the first 48 hours - the Muslim community just in London raised MORE money
than the UK government pledged in the same period . . shameful !
Not really. End of the day it's our tax money that goes towards these donations. I'd much rather focus the money on our society than donate to foreign countries. If you want to help them out of your own pocket fine, but don't expect a government/Country to just give hand-outs cause of a distaster.

Of course I read your post. I didn't like your implication that people from the most caring, giving countries in the world "be ashamed of themselves", that's all. I think it is a very ignorant, whiney, ungrateful and unappreciative thing to say actually, and it doesn't bode well for your image here my friend.

As for them "begging for donations", I think since the aforementioned countries ARE donating not only money but other forms of aid and relief supplies etc, maybe the problem is that Pakistan is on the other side of the world thus it takes a little time to move all that into the region.

If the aid isn't getting there fast enough, well that's nothing new. In the face of a terrible disaster the relief aid is NEVER there fast enough. Never.

Just chill out on telling people they need to be ashamed, because that's complete ballwash. You need to rethink that statement.

Mexico was the first country to respond to Katrina with aid. However, hurricanes Stan and Wilma have as much as destroyed the Yucatan Peninsula, as well as several other states. Whole cities have disappeared under mudslides.

What other countries have sent aid? Not one swingin' dick! That's how many.

So, fuck all the whiners. If the Mexican people can pick up and carry on after a disaster, so can the rest of the world! You don't hear Mexico screaming for help.

Oh, and BTW, I'm American! I just live here.

Seriously... that money has benefitted millions of people - folks that *really* needed it. Apart from urgent assistance, it's surprising the spectrum of aid being issued - the govt is threatening to send some my way next year Na.. not really for me - it's for part of an environmental/eco project - I'll make sure ya get a good payback!

finally a fair post.. and fair enough, telling people to be ashamed was maybe over the edge.. at the same time, I don't think a lot of countries has much to be proud of in this situation..

as to what it does for my image, you called me braindead in your first post.. can that be good for your image? so far I'm been called idiot, braindead, uneducated and a complete fucking retard.. nice..

un begs for funds to help people, listen to them... do what australia did when they noticed that they could give more.. they stepped up and doubled their effort!

The countries mentioned ALWAYS donate BILLIONS of dollars to these relief funds (this is what I said).

Tsunami relief Australia alone donate $500.000.000! With a population of ~20.000.000 and that doesn't count all the donations made by the general public.

As I mentioned before - there have been many many donation drives for the earthquake disaster. Millions have been raised - wtf more do you want?

As of late there have been MANY natural disasters - all these countries cannot just keep on giving. Although they still DO.

The US has just recently been hit by 3 hurricanes has it not? I'm sure this would take ALOT of their own resources and monies.

I said "something in this thread is braindead"...... maybe it's the UN.

And yes, calling it the way it is reall does bode well for my image. Sometimes I use abbrasive lingo to nail that point home, but there are definitely those here who are a whole lot more abbrasive than I.

With so many disasters in the world in the past few months alone, it's no wonder that the countries who usually "tow the line" might be a bit overwhelmed by it all. Not many countries can afford to keep forking out 10, 20 or 50 million bucks every few weeks for the disaster-de-jeur, especially when many of them (like the US) have major disasters of their own they can barely handle.

More understanding and appreciation is needed, not more fingerpointing.
