Own a Diesel Jetta or Passat or Diesel E Class Mercedes?
I'm looking for a second car to commute with. I know they aren't making the Diesel Passat this year but they are making the Diesel Jetta. I've heard good things about the new Diesel E Class Mercedes too.
I've had a Diesel Mercedes before and it was a great car, but it was slow and noisy. I've heard that the new diesels aren't like that at all. Does anyone have one of these new Diesels and share the good things/bad things about it? |

I've had my '03 TDI Jetta for two years now and it's just great. If you're a power junkie you won't like that it only has 90hp, though it has nice torque off the line, plenty for city driving. I've been running B20 bio-diesel in it since it was available here in Toronto. It's much better for the engine and the enviro. I get 1100KM on a 55L tank highway. If I do all city driving, it's around 800KM.
The brand new ones have a little more power, more features, and best crash rating in their class. I really like mine. Anything else you'd like to know about it?

Why Diesel...??
yuk.. spit... blech... Diesels are not very enviro friendly and the price of diesel has gone through the roof. Unless you are going to convert it to run on used cooking oil.... (dont laugh, theres a company here in California that adds another fuel tank to diesel cars, trucks and runs the motors on strained used cooking oil from restaurants - The engines have to be started on regular diesel, when they come up to temperature they can be switched to the used cooking oil - works great and if you arrange oil pick up service from just a few restaurants, youve got free fuel) Hell.. I got a 2001 Turbo Beetle - Gasoline powered and its gettin over 30mpg hwy and its got the power of most small V8s. and what about Hybrids? Big B CECash.com

I love diesels, I used to have an Isuzu diesel pickup that got 45mpg and I sold it when it hit 300k miles and it was still running perfectly. Hybrids really suck because the up front out of pocket is more than you will make back in gas savings. Even at the higher pump prices you still need to drive a hybrid for 5 years before the savings pays for itself. |

I'm not big on the Hybrids. The only one that is acceptable is the Hybrid Accord. If Lexus wasn't just a gussied up Toyota I'd consider the RX 400h. However, the prices don't justify the savings like Shok said.
Diesels are more environmentally friendly than a gasoline powered car of the same type. Diesel is a bit sootier but that is just particulate that precipitates out with little harm to the environment. They produce far less emissions than a Gasoline car and they get great mileage and are virtually maintenence free besides regular oil changes. Diesel is expensive now too, which frankly is ridiculous because it's essentially a gasoline byproduct. But it's still $0.20 less per gallon than regular here. Another thing is that in a warm weather climate like Florida where it rarely dips below 50 you don't even need a secondary fuel tank to run on vegetable oil. You can start and run the car on Vegetable oil with no noticable difference in performance. You will have to filter it and I've seen some crazy contraptions people have made to recycle McDonalds fryer oil. The Diesel engine was originally designed to run off Peanut oil. "Diesel Fuel" came after the invention of the engine which was named after it's designer. An old bus or a dump truck smells to be behind but the new cars aren't like that. Thanks for the responses thus far. I was wondering if anyone has had maintenence or warranty issues. I've heard that the newer VW aren't as reliable as the old ones. I wanted to see if anyone has any issues there. |

The only real issues with newer VW is in the electronics. I get small little rattles now & then in the dash... stuff like that. The engines are VERY reliable... the duty cycle is way beyond any gas burner. The bodies are galvanized steel and will never rust. Get leather seats and your interior will last too.
I don't know why you would convert your car to run on veggie oil when you can simply mix it in a barrel with a little methanol and lye to make nice bio-diesel that can go straight in the tank. That settles all the glycerine and sludge (if you're using used fryer oil) to the bottom. New diesels are very clean, and when sulfur content goes down in the next couple years by federal mandate they will be even cleaner. Low sulfur diesel will open the doors to the newer, even more efficient engines they have in Europe now. The diesel here is just too dirty now for them to run. I wouldn't recommend an un-proven technology like hybrids. Where do you get maintenance and how much are the parts? Any mechanic can work on a diesel and parts I'm sure are cheap... not that diesels break much. Now what I would like to see is a Diesel Hybrid!! ![]()

Just another thing on bio-diesel... it's not just good for the enviro. It's really good for the engine too. It's a solvent and keeps everything super clean. At only a 20% mix (B20) It also provides 70% better lubricity than regular diesel. Better lubrication = happy motor.

It's retarded that diesel would cost more than gas, seeing how diesel is the first product in the refining stage.
Diesel used to always be cheaper than gas by 10 to 20 cents a gallon. |

I just bought a new VW Golf TDI (turbo diesel) after doing a lot of research on where gas prices were going. Diesels these days burn a lot cleaner and are a lot less noisy than in the past, and with the turbo slapped on the car it makes up for the slow pick up that a straight up diesel would have. Bad smell, you hardly even notice it...
What about diesel prices? I just filled up this morning $2.89 a gallon, whereas regular 87 was $3.29. On top of that I get 50 MPG and 500 - 600 miles on one tank of fuel. That also means I have to fill up once for every two times a normal gas powered car would fil up.. anyway VW seems to be the leader in developing diesel automobiles, if you think gas prices will stay up might be a good idea to buy VW stock as diesel sales may be strong until hybrids really catch on in say 5 yrs or so |

actually turbo diesels are quite good. both VW and MB. performance is ok, and killer mileage.
