Diesels are not very enviro friendly and the price of diesel has gone through the roof. Unless you are going to convert it to run on used cooking oil....
(dont laugh, theres a company here in California that adds another fuel tank to diesel cars, trucks and runs the motors on strained used cooking oil from restaurants - The engines have to be started on regular diesel, when they come up to temperature they can be switched to the used cooking oil - works great and if you arrange oil pick up service from just a few restaurants, youve got free fuel)
Hell.. I got a 2001 Turbo Beetle - Gasoline powered and its gettin over 30mpg hwy and its got the power of most small V8s.
and what about Hybrids?

I love diesels, I used to have an Isuzu diesel pickup that got 45mpg and I sold it when it hit 300k miles and it was still running perfectly.
Hybrids really suck because the up front out of pocket is more than you will make back in gas savings.
Even at the higher pump prices you still need to drive a hybrid for 5 years before the savings pays for itself.
