LCD or plasma TV? - GoFuckYourself.com

So I saved some extra money - see sig - and gonna buy a new flat 42" in few days. Not for playstation and such, but for DVD and streaming digital broadcast.

I'm not world champion within TVs, so what do you recommend? Plasma or LCD? Any specific screen you're satisfied with (price don't matter)?

I'd go for plasma.
LCD is not that great IMO.

I have a Pioneer PDP-435HDE and I love it.
One of the best plasma tv's available.

For fast passed action plasmas are a lot better and the colors are a lot more close to the crt tv's. And what they say about plasmas life is no longer true, the half life of a plasma is about 6 years and then it can still be used as a descent basement TV. I mean most of TV's now have about a 5 year life span. Also plasmas have an a lot bigger viewing angle. Go for Pioneer or LG . MYself I have an LG and had no problems with it. And yeah burnt pixels are only caused by shock that means if you never hit the screen itself pixels will not burn

LCD is cool to watch photo's on but for movies it's not close to a good plasma tv.
Get a plasma tv and a dvd player with an HDMI connection and I bet you'll love it.

If you want one larger than 42" like a 52" TV, does one make more sense than the other? I thought after a certain size one starts to become the obvious choice.

whichever one you go with, I'd get an LCD as they last longer, make sure it is an HDTV as quite a few manufacturers throw out plasma tvs that are not so they can offer them cheaper. A lot of low resolution screens out there cheap too so research it. For plasma I'd get a Sony, Pioneer, Phillips or Fujitsu (P42HHA30WS). For LCD I'd get a Sharp.

42" or higher, plasma makes more sense (more affordable, more models available)

There aren't very many LCDs 42" or larger, and the ones that are available are VERY expensive.

I bought a little 26 inch LCD for above my fireplace. Nice little TV. I just stick to rear projection for my big TV.

39inch plus: plasma is the way to go

+ plasma will avoid the 'tail' you get after a ball in a tennis match (a common complain for lcds)

i have a sony 39inch HD readyand i LOVE IT
go sony, one of the best on plasma technology!

I'd wait some time till the big LCDs will have really good and big resolutions.
So far, big lcds have similar resolutions to middle ones and that's why it looks so shitty.

I've heard that plasma increases the average electricity bill with 30% (overall, not just the use from the tv)

Assuming the LCD's catch up to Plasma in resolution on larger TV's, which is the better deal (quality, lifespan, price...)?

If your going with hdtv, make sure to get a tv with (1080p) - 1920x1080 pixels

1080p - 1920x1080 pixels with progressive scanning

neither.
choose a large digital tv. it is the best option for the money.

lcd don't have enough color and are slow.
plasma are way too much for what it's for, the color fades year after year, and plasma cells break.

but if u got money to burn every year, then i would be a new plamsa every year or two.

just because it boosts energy amounts by 30% does not mean that costs an extra $60 - $100. this is in regards to the average home.

they do bump up energy consumption by a signifigant amount. it is about 30% for average use.

lcd on the other hand are supersavers in regard to energy consumption. they use very little.

yes, cause lcd's are slow. i wouldn't get an lcd because of this and because of their lack of color range and intensity.

LCD's may last longer but cost twice as much (or more for the big suckers). Who cares if your plasma burns out in 5 years. You can replace it for $200 by then.

LCD all the way. Compare the detail of the picture of the two. You'll notice the LCD has more detail, better color quality, darker blacks and whiter whites.

Panasonic, I looked at them all. Even better than some of the Sonys I looked at.

I have an LCD TV too. I also looked at the DLP and they probably are the best bang for the buck. The picture quality is real close to the plasma. But with LCD and DLP tvs, you almost need to see the tv straight on. If you are viewing from an angle you seem to lose the picture. But if you want the best in HDTV, plasma is the way to go. I have a 42' Panasonic, with HD-DVR...the high def channels are so crisp and clear its amazing.

Don't know if it still applys but lcd's are not as thin, i got a 47' plasma; the 47's lcd still looked like a projection tv, well not as thick but it was not thin like our desktops.
