Its better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

What you fail to comprehend is that helmets contribute to accidents at least as much (if not more) than the injuries they might prevent.

They cause fatigue, impairment of sight and hearing. Full faced helmets are the worst.

I remember when they first forced us to start wearing them I almost got in a wreck within the first week because the helmet caused me to not be able to hear a car that came racing up past me on the right.

It was only at the last second that I happened to catch a glimpse of it in my mirror and I avoided colliding with it.

It scared the living crap out of me.

I think you've been wearing poorly fitted helmets.

I have several fullface helmets ranging from HJC to Shoei to Simpson to Bell.
My HJC is the worst. It does block some of my peripheral vision and the wind noise it makes is terrible. The Bell is only a little better. Both the Shoei and Simpson are very quiet, I hear very little wind and have no problems hearing other things around me, and they only block the very edge of my peripheral vision. My sunglasses block more of my vision than those 2 helmets do. I actually hear better in those helmets than I do in my skid lid, which has the sound of the wind rushing past the straps right next to my ears. Those nifty things on helmets like flip-up fronts and vents and shit that make them more comfortable are also most of what makes most of the noise.

But hey whats the point in this...

Try to give me a 2 week notice next time you guys plan a ride. I have my VTX1800R setup for long rides and I think it'd be fun to come out and ride with you guys.

Another little fact. People say, "if I did not have my helmet on, my skull would have cracked." Guess what the first thing is a surgeon does in case of severe head trauma. Yep, crack the skull to relieve pressure of fluids on the brain.
Oh come one BD don't tell me you are that ignorant.

You need to get a new helmet after you dropped it (big drop that is) cause its looses its strenght cause the structure can be damaged. So when you get in an accident the helmet will protect your head, after the accident you have to replace it. Comon sense I think.

For the surgery part, come on man. There is a diffrence in cracking your skull on a road or when the surgeon "cracks" it.

You probably don't want to wear a seatbelt in a car to I asume?

nothing like a great day of riding thread hijacked about helmet opinions...

Yes, it was an awesome ride, I'll plan another in a month or so!

I have always worn a seatbelt since around 1965. I will never forget, our entire family was in the van driving to the new city we were moving to, so we could check out where the school, church, etc was.

We were on the freeway, and a VW beetle merged on and across 2 lanes until it sideswiped us. It then rolled back across 3 lanes. My dad pulled over, and expected to find a dead person in the car.

Turned out it was some college chick that happened to have seatbelts (pretty much unheard of at the time).

After seeing that, my dad turned around, went to an auto parts store, and bought and installed seatbelts for all of us.

I have never felt comfortable in a car without them ever since.

There may be a difference in hospital costs for those who wear helmets who are in an accident, but I bet a lot more of the motorcyclists who aren't wearing helmets go straight to the morgue...
