(CNN) -- A Columbus, Georgia, high school student has been suspended for 10 days after he became defiant when a teacher interrupted a cell phone conversation with his mother, who is stationed in Iraq, a school district official said Friday.

"He became very belligerent and very threatening to her" when asked to turn over the phone, Phillips said.

The teen, whom Muscogee County School District Superintendent John Phillips Jr., wouldn't name, did not tell the teacher he was talking to his mother in Iraq.

The Associated Press identified him as Kevin Francois.

"I'm sure if she was aware of that, she would have acted much differently in dealing with the matter," Phillips said.

The student received the call from Sgt. 1st Class Monique Bates during a lunch break at Spencer High School.

"He said he was 17 years old and he would do what he wanted to do," Phillips told CNN-affiliate WTVM.

The teacher took him to the principal's office, where "he became very unruly and out of control," said Phillips. "It was escalating to a point where they were getting ready to call security."

The student lives with his guardian, an aunt, while his mother is deployed, the superintendent said. Both are to attend a meeting at the school Wednesday.

"We are endeavoring to have the young man readmitted after a three-day suspension, which was the first option for him. It was only after greater defiance and profanity that the suspension was extended," Phillips said.

The student knew it was against school policy to use a cell phone on school grounds, he added.

"We try to protect instructional time. We try to make sure the environment in the school is appropriate," Phillips said. "The young man knows what the rules and regulations are."

Phillips said the school, which is located near Fort Benning, often arranges for students to receive calls from parents who are deployed. More than 3,700 students in the district belong to military families.

The Muscogee County School District has over 3700 military students enrolled. We have
a long and strong relationship with Ft. Benning. Spencer High School has the greatest
number of military students of any of our schools. All of our counselors have received
training in supporting students whose parents have been deployed, and military personnel
serve as Partners in Education in over half of our schools.

When the Spencer teacher approached the young man about using a cell phone on
campus, contrary to Board of Education policy which is designed to preserve
instructional time and decorum in our schools, the young man did not tell the teacher he
was speaking to his mother in Iraq. He indicated he would not comply with a request to
turn over his cell phone and used profanity. The teacher escorted the young man to the
office, where assistant principals tried to get him to calm himself and to cease the use of
profanity. It was only at this point that administrators learned he was talking to his
mother in Iraq.

The Guidance Department at Spencer High School has arranged for a number of students
to receive calls from parents who are deployed. They would have been happy to do this
for this young man. The issue here was not so much the use of the cell phone as it was
the choices the young man made in handling the situation. We are empathetic to all
students whose parents serve in the armed forces; we do have behavior standards which
we uphold.

The school has been in touch with personnel from Ft. Benning. We are endeavoring to
have the young man readmitted after a three day suspension, which was the first option
for him. It was only after greater defiance and profanity that the suspension was
extended. We will ask that the student and his guardian sign a behavior contract
indicating that he will comply with the same standards of behavior which apply to all of
our students. We will continue to be sensitive to the needs of students whose parents
serve our country.

Why this story outrages me: It's so typically narrow minded American. I don't know where a lot of you people come from, but where I come from, our schools/teachers would have gone above and beyond to make provisions for a student whose parent(s) was in Iraq and calling them. There's this student's side of the story, the school's side of the story, and the truth. Just reading the 2 versions above, you can see they are both biased.

This isn't about a young man being insubordinent. This is about adult's using poor judgement. There's a thing called discretion and if any teacher or principal on that staff had half a brain they would have never let something like this escalate to national news. Lets pretend for a moment that this kid was rude, breaking the rules, didn't tell the teacher it was his mother calling from Iraq, etc etc... surely after finding out that it was his mother, they SHOULD have looked the other way and not given this kid more grief than he already has. Your mother is in Iraq, you won't see her for a year, she's risking her life, and you're getting national news coverage because you received a phone call from her during LUNCH while you were in school. Ridiculous!

I don't know where a lot of you people come from, but where I come from, our schools/teachers would have gone above and beyond to make provisions for a student whose parent(s) was in Iraq and calling them. There's this student's side of the story, the school's side of the story, and the truth. Just reading the 2 versions above, you can see they are both biased. This isn't about a young man being insubordinent. This is about adult's using poor judgement. There's a thing called discretion and if any teacher or principal on that staff had half a brain they would have never let something like this escalate to national news. Lets pretend for a moment that this kid was rude, breaking the rules, didn't tell the teacher it was his mother calling from Iraq, etc etc... surely after finding out that it was his mother, they SHOULD have looked the other way and not given this kid more grief than he already has. Your mother is in Iraq, you won't see her for a year, she's risking her life, and you're getting national news coverage because you received a phone call from her during LUNCH while you were in school. Ridiculous! This country and people in this country make mountains out of mole hills. We put so much time and effort into nonsense and less important things.
