I see your point - but I've been able to turn deals in person that I've never would have been able to turn via phone, email, or IM

oh no... not the shoes.

I'm sure you have the money to back up your offers. And trying to sell your sig is not a sign that you're desperate for money... it's just means you want more of it.

The problem you run into dealing with owners of the big one word domains is that they often assess the "value potential" instead of the "current market value" when determining what they want for one of their gems.

Potential is the keyword and you'll hear stuff like "well that name has the potential to be worth tens of millions when its branded and fully developed."

And they are right to an extent. There are only a handful of companies out there though with the marketing resources to take a domain into the stratosphere.

I know several domain guys who think they are already Billionaires. And if you look at all the names they've got you'd say yep that portfolio has the "potential" to be worth a billion one day. Again "potential". Its not there yet because despite the immense wealth of the top several hundred domainers, none that I can see have the individual financial resources and people resources to take their portfolio from PPC landing pages to the fully developed and fully worldwide marketed level.

So there are some people with a bunch of good names that are just sitting on them instead of developing them.

This "sexy.com" domain being talked about would you sell it for a million if it was yours?

but sometimes meeting in person will help you seal the deal, other times it can backfire... seller may pre-judge you based on too many factors... may think you don't have money (scam?), or that you have too much money (moneybags?), etc... but sometimes it's worth the risk to meet up with them.

one example: PRO

we recently acquired a large blog network of sites + hundreds of targeted blog domains... and it was only because we used a two-prong attack... my partner (in the blog venture) met the seller for dinner and I spent nearly 12 hours on the phone after their meeting negotiating w/ the seller and secured the deal before our competition (M.C.) had a chance to wake up...they were planning on signing a deal at Noon. It was grueling but exciting. I do not think we could've closed the deal without first meeting the seller to show we were serious with contracts & money in hand. Our competitors have more funding then us because they are backed by a billionaire, but we took the extra step of meeting with seller the night before they were signing contracts and we made the seller an offer he could not refuse: win/win. And considering the value of blog domains right now, we're very happy with the deal. They were quite a few 5-6 figure domains in that portfolio. Funny part is we contacted him about 1 domain and was trying to beg him to separate it from his portfolio, but after seeing his whole portfolio and seeing who we were up against, we ended up acquiring the whole thing because we did not want our competitors to own these domains.

another example: PRO

Another time, I refused to sell a domain name to a buyer from Iceland and then I got a phone call from the buyer saying he really had to have the domain and was going to personally bring me a contract+check... I laughed at him... but when I received a local phone call from him later that week and met with him (I brought a bodyguard just in case. LOL), we both got what we wanted. I signed the contract and he gave me the check. I was impressed by his persistence, determination and could see & feel that the offer was real.

last example: CON

Another time, I sent an email offer for a domain. I did not know the seller, or anything about him, but he had a domain I had to have to complement another domain I just acquired. After negotiating with seller over the phone and via email, I had no idea the seller knew exactly who I was, had seen me clubbing with my friends many times, met me before, possibly partied with us, etc... he judged me and re-priced his domain accordingly based on what he believed I was willing to spend taken many factors into account and other bullshit assumptions (most were true ). A domain that should've cost me 1X cost me 5X because the seller had me pegged and met me before. LOL. He made it very clear he knew who I was and that my offer was generous but way too low considering it was coming from me and he was charging much more BECAUSE he met me. In the end, I still bought the domain but learned my lesson... always remain in stealth mode... always... even if meeting them in person.

...I've got a few more stories, but I'm saving them for my blog/book.

I would at a $1 Mil. Its a great name, but like I said in my post, without massive marketing investment, its just a great name and that is all.

no, I wouldn't have turned down the million for sexy.com

Dombuyer, after reading all the domain threads lately, we've decided to get an appraisal on blowout.com
(not viewable browser side btw)
now I'll go back in the other thread and find the name of those websites for doing that lol

Take along a Luca Brasi, if you meet in person.

Michael: ...Well when Johnny was first starting out, he was signed to this contract with a big-band leader. And as his career got better and better he wanted to get out of it. Now, Johnny is my father's godson. My father went to see the bandleader, with a contract for $10,000 to let Johnny go, but the bandleader said no. So the next day, my father went to see the bandleader again, only this time with Luca Brasi. Within an hour, the bandleader signed the release, with a certified check of $1000.

Kay Adams: How did he do that?

Michael: My father made him an offer he couldn't refuse.

Kay Adams: What was it?

Michael: Luca Brasi held a gun to his head, and my father assured the bandleader, that either his signature or his brains would be on the contract.

i know exactly how many type-ins sexy.com gets and how it converts and the search term thing you posted here is another prime example of how that dombuyer thread misled people into domain valuations based on irrelavant info.

lol. $1m for sexy.com is like spitting in the guys face.

you can make that in 8 months without any work, any promotion and any
$$ invested (other than domain of course). of course, with the present site
i doubt he makes that, though he may.

i dunno why you always want to make yourself look like the "man" in front
of the gfy crew by announcing shit like this. wow, you scraped together
$1mil (or not) off some venture capitalists or from the bank and you're
a high roller. haha.

the funny thing is, every time i see one of your posts it makes you look
more like you don't know what the *#*$ you're talking about.

sorry bud...

$1 million is spitting in his face, and *I* don't know what I'm talking about?

Does it occur to you that you are in the minority in your opinion? Does that ring alarm bells?

Luc, don't know why you always attack me. Your reveal yourself in your hatin'

For the sake of argument

Without massive marketing efforts/resources I really can't figure how any domain based on typins can achieve such a feat.

lol, i'm not sure why i always attack your threads, this is strange, but i guess it has something to do with our conflicting views, and the fact that your posts deal with domains. i actually find it funny, i have no hostility towards you. honest ;)

here's my 2 cents, again. say you had some smaller name, ex: flashgames.com. say you KNEW this domain name made, say $100k/year without any work. would you offer the seller $100k and expect a sale? i wouldn't. you and i know that domain can make an easy million inside of 8-12 months. saying that you offered $1mil just shows that you want your GFY crew to recognize you for your brave act, but that $1mil was like your $250k bid since it was far from being in the range.

as far as me being the minority, well, lets look around.... how many of the people who posted actually qualify to value such a name? how many of them even know where to start? 4/100? now check those 4 and tell me what they said (ps: your opinion won't count in this one). ;)

peace

this is probably why you are doing whatever it is you are doing and you're not into domains. not insulting your intelligence, just saying that if you knew a bit more about the business, you'd probably be buying whatever is left (is there anything left?)

a domain like sexy.com is an easy retirement for just about anyone. just setup a partnership with someone like AFF and you're as good as gold.

i still do not understand why you would discuss a domain owner's business who is not hanging out on adult forums.

I never said that you couldn't make money off of it..

You claimed the owner could make $1,000,000 within a peroid less then a year without any serious marketing or development and I don't see that.

I think a million dollars for that domain is a great offer.

DomBuyer, will CKBL.com ever be worth anything as a media name you think?

Look, my post was actually pretty innocent. I was surprised by my offer, and surprised by Walter's response. It's a lot of money to spend, and a lot of money to turn down. The contradiction in that says a lot about the domain business.

You'll notice I was very careful not to publish anything about my many conversations with Walter except that funny comment, which does nothing to diminish the value of his domain or anything about his game (if anything, he's getting tons of free publicity. Don't think I didn't think of that).

I offered him a lot of money and he didn't accept it. I'm posting it because I think it's fascinating. If you don't like it Evan, tough luck. It's none of your business anyway. I'll let Walter tell me if he has a problem with it, which of course he wouldn't.

you don't see it because your view is probably based on a TGP approach, where you need tens of millions of visitors to make a few bucks.

though i didn't have names anything close to this one, i did have some great typeins over the years and i can tell you that they are better than gold. he'd be a fool to let this one go for $1mil, but i understand why you think it's a great offer.
