He ICQ'd me and asked for money to be a sponsor. I told him that I would give $2000 for sponsorship money and in return one of the webmasters would wear my company shirt as well has have banners and other forms of advertising leading up to the challenge.

After that he continued to ICQ me on a regular basis just to give me updates on stupid shit that had nothing to do with the contest or my sponsorship (like he's going to New York and other shit I didn't care about). More and more he was looking like a little kid with a decent idea and power-backers for his Challenge.

I started to get cold feet with the sponsorship money (I always go with my gut feeling) so I changed it up. Instead of $2000 sponsorship money I told him that I would do all the printing for it. I would print $3000 worth of marketing materials (flyers, banners, posters, etc) instead of the $2000 cash sponsorship. I haven't heard from him since.

I am glad that I go with my gut feelings. $2000 isn't a lot of money and won't make anyone go broke but it's the principle. Regardless if its $10 or $10,000 he's still a fucking scamming theif and should be dealt with accordingly.

I hope everything works out for you guys in getting what's owed.

We rold him we would be the live cam sponser. WE never invited any money and was near impossible to get a hold off.

Seemed like a straight up guy on the phone. Any chance this is a misunderstanding?

moral of the story.... never use western union. WHY does someone need to use western union ? Why can't he accept wire transfer? no checking account ??? That's not a good sign. Can't take credit cards either....

Another red light that should go off is when someone says " I will pay you as soon as I collect from the other guy" (when he sends me the 2 thousand I will send you 1 thousand i owe you). this mean the guy has no money... so so far it looks like he has no checking account, no money, and you think you know him ?

I wouldn't be surprised if more then half of all western union payments sent to people that were not related to each other were fraud/scams..

also, niothing "happened" to him. His phones were disconnected. It would take more then 3 weeks for his phones to be cut off even if his bill was due the day he dissapeared. He is burried in debt and was already way late on bills (not a good sign) or he got them disconnected to avoid you guys...

How did him saying send western union not tip you off? Western Union is like the fraud/scam meca of wire fraud, I bet more fraud transfers go through western union than any other wire service in the country

I don't get something

I have been on this board a while, and I never have seen this Jon guy doing anything really....
first, what made you all decide that he was a standup guy?

second, has anyone ever met him in person

third, has anyone ever had any successful business deals with him?

fourth, who vouched for this person to make you all wanna give him a couple grand?

just because Lensman says "i approve this contest" doesn't mean he vouches for the guy and knows him...Lensman just approved of the contest, plain and simple

I agree.
Everytime Len's has tried or put his agreement on a contest it has bit him and others in the ass

2 Cent's says not to get invlved with contests but it is his board. Limiting contests is smart, getting involved is bad unless of course Len's is put in complete loop about it and even given the money to delegate it's use.
I love contest's I feel bad for Len's when ever he decides that he gonna put his name on one of these cluster fucks it turns against em.
Only thing that went remotly well was Miss GFY concerning contest's he sponsored.

I will quote two of Jon's emails below....

"More Details: Lensman/Eric @ GFY will be promoting this contest on GFY strongly. This contest has had alot of feedback from webmasters and we are expecting alot of entries to the contest and alot of activity on thegfychallenge.com website. There will be a number of views of the banner and button spots due to the first 3 weeks of the contest will be a voting round with multiple page views per webmaster."

"Glad to have you on board on this contest. As Lensman said...This is gonna be huge!"

See why I believed him now?

I would agree with you; it sucks that Lensmans name gets involved in this stuff. It's just when I heard the Lensman and Eric were involved and when he used their names on numerous occasions I figured it was a solid deal. Especially when using GFY in the name of the contest as Lensman owns GFY. I am by no means trying to put the blame on Lensman, because this is in no way, shape, or form his fault. Someone was using Lensman and his employees name to scam.

I first met Jon when he came into our IRC channel. He started talking about wanting to have a web cam contest etc etc. So I thought it sounded like a good idea but didn't think it would ever be anything more than an idea. Then he kept talking about it and started contacting people about it and I was like... hmm, maybe he's serious.

When he said that he started contacting sponsors, designers, hosts, adult.com for permission etc etc... I thought it was all legit and on the up and up. So I told him I wanted to be a judge. Ok... so then he got the "go ahead" from Lensman, which I asked him about several times because I was skeptical but believed it to be true when he registered the domain thegfychallenge.com and started hyping it up.

I thought things were coming together... everyday he would report his progress with organizing this event. I believed things were going smoothly. At one point I asked if 7 judges would be enough, he said "Yeah, because I have to pay machinegunkelly for each cartoon and it adds up."

He told me he was thinking about moving to NYC. I live in NY and I told him how expensive it is etc. He said, "that's ok I have the finances for it." So I was like ok cool. Then he started saying "I think I'm going to move to NYC this week, I'll be working for Webair." I was thinking, 'Who just up and moves to a strange city that fast?' I found that to be strange but hey, anything is possible right? One day in April he said he was going to NYC to find a place to live. I assumed he was just going for a day or 2 to scout out the city and stuff. I thought he would be back in time for the official launch of the GFY challenge. The day of the contest opening came and went and Jon was nowhere to be found. At first I thought something happened to him. I was a bit concerned... someone from NC in NYC... who knows what could have happened.

I didn't know he was getting money from anyone via Western Union. I didn't know he was getting any money upfront for anything. I assumed the details of the contest were still sketchy at best and nothing was carved in stone until its official launch.

Why would he take $2000 and bail? If this was a scam, he could have let it go for 10 times that... easily. I always thought he was a bit eccentric and quirky, but when he started organizing all of this, I thought he was legit.

When he wasn't back on the day the contest was supposed to start, I knew something was wrong... but I didn't know what. At the worst, I thought he just abandoned this contest... I didn't know he had gotten money from anybody. That's not right. He has someone's money and he owes machinegunkelly money. Ugh... this sucks

He was even telling me about going to the show in Montreal and asking what color he should dye his hair. Is his a psychopath? Schizophrenic maybe?

Even if he had problems, he should have contacted SOMEONE and let them know what is going on. I'm still shocked that he actually received money via Western Union... wow

I Don't see why the people say Western union should've been a tip off .
I get loads of requests from webmasters to pay that way cause its easiest for them .

I can take credit cards but it actually turns out cheaper for me to have it through Epass , check or WU ..

I'd hate to think someone was to think they are gonna get scammed if someone says to pay via WU , just maybe be more cautious for western union is all , as they offer NO buyer protection or means to get your money back .

I'd a agree. I've done quite a bit of business through Western Union. ALOT of International Business, actually because it is easier. I think Western Union is the least of the worry of the contest.... at first he was going to have me send a Money Order.

So Jon..... is gone.

Interesting. I spoke to him on ICQ at one point, he seemed like a good guy so I set up some link trades with him on my resource pages. That's as far as I would get involved at that point, and I'd have said no if he had asked me to put out some money up front.

Now his name is trashed by all who saw what went down, no one will ever trust the name "Jon" again. All for a whopping $2k? it's almost laughable in it's idiocy. It's like trading in a Mercedes for a pogo stick.

Jon, if you're reading this I just want to tell you, you're a disappointment.

I haven't spoken with Jon in many, many months, but I thought I saw him post not long ago about moving to another state soon. That could be why he's MIA.

That NC address could be a relative. I sent him a birthday card or something about 4 years ago to an address in NC, but then he moved out-of-state the following year.

He did have that fiasco a few years back, though, with his hosting company he had where he left everyone high and dry. Had a lot of angry webmasters on his ass and he disappeared for a year or so until his return last year.

I'm far from being a close friend of his, but I can't believe he'd be stupid enough to screw anyone again, especially with the big names he had backing him on this contest.
