Thanks -

That's exactly what it's like -- it's absolutely contemptible.

Oh, no doubt it.

Money will be made.

You might say "Wouldn't you do it, too, Jack -- if you had the opportunity to achieve a success (however short-term), even if it meant you would harm the industry...."

My answer would be...

"No, I would not."

I hope that caring about the industry I'm in, above the profits of my own company or (personally, even) doesn't alienate me in this crowd -- LOL

It's just an extremely shortsighted marketing ploy very thinly veiled as an altruistic (pardon the pseudo pun) for the good of all mankind type of plan.

What happens if it does become a requirement? They will at first have a bigger share of a probably smaller overall market.

But as soon as every other site implements checks what will be True's advantage then? What will their promo say then?

"We thought of doing background checks first and we pushed for it to become law so join our site instead of any of the other dating sites that also do the same check and that are better than us in several areas " ??

I'm no marketing genius but this doesn't make any sense to me and seems a definite "shooting yourself in the foot" or "cutting off your nose to spite your face" kind of move.

I'm not going to let that stop me from saying True.com sucks.

I still believe in getting the word out as the best way to get the word out about something.

But, maybe, that's just because I lived in Berkeley for 3 years -- LOL.

Unless their true (pardon my pun now hehe) agenda is to release a background-check site and try to rake in the cash with that.....in which case, more background check competitors will simply come out (not to mention those which exist already) and they will be in the same boat.

Actually, that market is quite small and will very soon face the profitability crunch of commoditization. Online background check businesses use public data. There are only so many ways to differentiate a finite, publicly-accessible database with clever marketing.

In this regard, True.com are actually AHEAD of the curve. They are trying to force, via legislation, a fundamental revision of the practice of online dating. Even though, the ultimate results of this will be negative for the INDUSTRY, it will still be several years before their competitors even respond (during which time True's market share will expand), and several more years before the attrition effect on the overall market begins to cancel True's growth trend.

By then, their brand will lend itself to all sorts of other online "safety" models and businesses.

Their real motive for this is to squash their competition. The time + money to implement this would + the loss of members would hurt their competitors and they know it. That's what it's all about,

"Adult Friend Finder should be investigated for their use of "fake" content. If one does a dilligent search, you will find the same photos of women throughout the country. Also when attempting to make contact, you will not recieve any honest reponses. The ones you do recieve are frauds who attemt to make you pay to see their web and cam sites.

If you go to www.gfy.com it is a webmaster fourm site. There you will see how they laugh at "surfers" who are suckered into throwing away their money on fraud sites such as friend finder and match.com

Do you mean right now, when it is just a competitive idea with the possibility to become some kind of law in some places down the line?

I would assume all dating services are looking at if and how to implement this into their systems, even as some type of premium upgrade. "Let us do a background check on you for an additional $19.99 and get a gold star next to your name certifying you are a good person as you will get lots more responses this way" bla bla

I mean, if it becomes law tomorrow they will have to respond. Whether that would mean being forced to scrap their entire database and start from scratch or be given some kind of grace period to run checks on current members (if they grant permission) and purge those that refuse or fail.

Yes I can see True having quite a head start and everyone trying to play catch up for some time if this comes to pass.

They don't have a patent on background checks but as was mentioned on the other site it does reek of something ripe for anti-trust or similiar action.

Let's pretend a law just passed that requires affluent white men to register their melanic mistresses. Do you think they'd come out and get in line right away? Or do you think they'd just wallow in post-coital oprobrium for a few days, neither showering nor eating, until the "coast was clear" ?

Ever heard of the Guns for Cash program?

Do you see my point yet, John?

So what you are saying, in summary then is, if there were nobody in the world called David Bloom we would have cheaper gas?

Yeah, ok. Why not require bars and clubs to do background checks on all their customers as they come in the door?

I suspect the whole thing is a ploy to get lots of free press. It's working.
