NHL cancels entire season

I was actually optimistic that overnight talks would produce some kind of resolution to this. Apparently it hasn't.

The players are idiots. They have no idea how this will impact the game.

If some sponsor tells his affiliates, that he cant afford to pay them anymore and need to decrease the payouts by 50%, what do you think would they do? They wouldnt promote him. Its mostly fault of the sponsor, not the affiliates.

"Bettman's threatened cancellation of the season shifted the pressure to the players, some of whom said Tuesday they were surprised that the union accepted a salary cap this late in the game.

"We probably could've gotten this thing done in the summertime," Chicago forward Matthew Barnaby said. "I'm just a little disappointed that it went this far to play poker and to have someone call your bluff." "

Good fucking riddance I say. Baseball lost me after their 94 strike, and the NHL has lost me this time. Surprising, basketball's not that bad a sport. I have come to understand it's following.

Unfortunately, when they finally open the doors again, the hosers that live for hockey will flock to the doors like GFY'ers flock to threads promising naked pics.

Hopefully I'm wrong, and the players see the damage they've done and rid the union of Goodenow.

Note-It's not that a deal can't be reached at this time folks, but both Bettman and Goodenow have egos that will NEVER allow the other guys offer to be the FINAL offer.

The bright side of all this could be that hockey will return home to Canada where it belongs. I couldn't give a shit what the US markets do or don't do.

I would like to see the N in NHL mean Canada. A Canadian league pure and simple. Maybe we'd let Minnesota have a team.

the main difference though is that there are 100's of other sponsers. If the one you are using suddenly says it is dropping payouts from $30 per signup to $15 per signup, there are still 100's of programs out there that will pay you $30 per signup.

there is no other hockey league in the world that will pay these players what they make in the NHL. A good example. Jagr made 13 million last year. He argues that when he plays hockey, that is what he is worth so that is what he should be paid. You could argue if he is worth that, but clearly one team was willing to pay it regardless. So then on the lockout comes and he ends up playing in russia for 1.5 million. So he says he's worth 13 mil but is obviously willing to play for much much less. Many NHL players ( some of the big stars in the game ) went off to play in europe for 1/10th of what they made in the NHL. I think in doing this they shot themselves in the foot becase it told the owners that the players are willing to play for less.

I can see both sides of this argument but I think you have to put the pressure on the players. It is clear that the league will not be able to survive without some kind of a salary cap. The players are going to have to except that and understand if they want to play in north america, in the NHL, it will have to be under a salary cap. I think it could be like basketball and football where every couple of years they look at revenues and raise the cap limit if revenues are good.

nice try

put it this way... I do 1 million a year.. Because you are vital to my success.. I pay you 50% ... $500k .. Why? Because I think you are worth %50 of the business...(even though that % can be negotiated) Next year.. I make $300k .. you think you should get $500k .. base on fucking what? Your salary is based on profits... If I make $20 millions.. you get 10millions.. If i make $300k you get $150k ..... Its not a hard concept to grasp is it..?

Once, just ONCE, I'd like to see an owner pay a player 50% of his salary because his performance sucked.

Player's have no problem holding out for more money when they have ONE good year, so why the hell not?

Lock out that ONE player until he agrees to a salary reduction.

How fast would a breach of contract lawsuit take in that case?

Why an owner didn't try suing a player for breach of contract when he held out, I'll never know.

Lock out that ONE player until he agrees to a salary reduction.

How fast would a breach of contract lawsuit take in that case?

Why an owner didn't try suing a player for breach of contract when he held out, I'll never know.
i would rather do a pps type system with hockey players

but ur right.. but its not just the players fault here.. owners are greedy and so forth.. either way its out of hand on both sides..

but players are not partners, but emplyees, if you have an employee, you have to pay him the salary no matter if you make 1 million or $300k per year.

wrong...

there's 2 types of employes.. those who are paid for what the work they do is worth... based on scholarity, skills, experience, etc.. but not based on revenues..
Exemple.. construction workers, doctors, etc...

And employes with salaries based on the revenues they can generate... Employes that are not replacable and directly responsible for the revenue genrated...

Why do you think certain celebrities are paid $20M and sport athetes are paid millions...? Why do you think footaball players are paid 2x more than hockey players..? Because they work harder? No, because they simply generate more revenues...

of course, more publicity, more money...But the owner of the company, movie company, football club, hockey club has to know what he can afford to pay. Not to make a contract and then say: Oh, sorry, my calculations were wrong, I have to cut your salary.

I agree.

A great example. Adrian Beltre ( a baseball player ) has been an average to above average player his whole career and makes around 5 million a year last year he had a break out year and signed a 5 year 11.5 million a year contract. But I bet if he goes back to being average this year he won't be giving back a bunch of that money.

Exactly.

The WORST incident, I've EVER heard of was Keith Tkachuk in Winnipeg about 10 years ago.

Jackass signed a front loaded contract for say 5 million year one, and one million for years two, three and four. He AGREED to these terms, and signed it.

He played the first year, NO problem, as he was one of the highest paid players in the league.

Year two rolled around and he held out, because he was now being underpaid. Nevermind that he was being OVERPAID the year previous.

That's pretty much when the NHL players lost my respect.

Edit-Those figures show him making an average of 2 million per year (which is probably about right for time actually), so why not just sign a four year deal for 8 million dollars? Presumably because he had full intention of not honoring the deal beyond year one.
