The American Flag (pic)

I just took this from the window of my San Francisco apartment. Beautiful, isn't it?

Our government's recent Stupidities and Depravities notwithstanding, I can't help but be awed by the amazingness of the American "experiment".

Think about it, we were the first nation conceived by ideals. The first people to eschew civilization and GO BACK into the wilderness. The first government to undertake a definition of Rightful Human Existence in its launching document.

I'm pretty much never inclined to feelings of patriotism. But tonight, huddled here among the late-night GFYers, I feel a kind of warm swelling inside me that whispers: "God bless America."

No offense taken. The wavering flag is visible in the fuzzy light mass at the top of the building. Impressionism.

Scotty, baby -- doncha see, the only reason the Canadians are wiser than us is because they brought European Equivocation and Diplomacy with them from France. Sure, you guys developed your own brand of outdoor ruggedness. I'm sure you've got stories about fellas wrestlin' with bears, just like we do. But there's a difference in ideological ferocity between Canadians and Americans. You guys won't just kill anybody like we will.

Bwahaha

EVERY SINGLE nation, village, tribe, city whatever the fuck is conceived by ideals. If you mean to say "good, honest ideals", then you're partly right since exterminating the indians isn't a very good and honest ideal now is it?

The first people to eschew civilization and GO BACK into the wilderness?
Sure.......whatever your historybook tells you man.
Just forget about the egyptians, the vikings and what not.

Wasn't Alexander the Great and his army a great example of people who went back to the wilderness? Yes...it was. And LONG before anyone was even thinking about setting sail to the "new world"

Get your facts straight please....

he's american, and they're the most powerful country on the planet now so he gets to write history as he sees fit and we just have to take it.

Yeah I know how it works...or at least, how THEY think it works.
Doesn't mean I have to neglect pointing it out to them ;)

Of course IDEAS lay behind every great human effort -- the building of the Pyramids in Egypt, the Conquest of the East by Alexander, and many more. But the difference to which I'm calling attention is the difference between the ideas of single ambitious man (or woman) gone into unrestrained fruition, and the IDEALS of a nascent government grappling with the question: "How may a people be governed *and* set free?"

Alexander went into the wilderness to conquer and possess. The pilgrims FLED a system they decided was inadequate to their rights as human beings.

I'm not saying America hasn't drifted shamefully from those founding ideals (as recently, even, as the illegitimate detainment of Arab-Americans in Cuba without process), all I'm saying is something that had never happened before in history happened at the genesis of the United States, and (even though we've grown corrupt and depraved in our ways since then) it was really kinda cool.

Dooood, it's the middle of the friggin' night. I had to hand-hold the camera -- no tripod. But, somehow, you can see the flag's stripes -- CAN'T YOU?!

Imagine you were riding in fast car with your head out the window. The wind would compress your eyes and make everything runny and blurry, but it could be one of the happiest moments in your life -- precisely BECAUSE nothing was CLEAR.

I suck at photochop.
I do however excel at complex fourier analysis, and applying some simple techniques I was able to both magnify and sharpen the center of the image quite extensively.

Looks like he's trying to do a "White Noise" on ya with the ole memo recorder. Do not be alarmed, I get famous dead people's ectoplasm hanging outside my windows all the time. Garlic don't do nuttin' to keep 'em away

Bastard.

The optical equivalent of white noise is FOG -- and that's exactly what we have a lot of here, tonight.

The guy who gets somebody else to do the dirty-work, of course. But what's that got to do with it?

If anything, Americans are MORE prone to pull the trigger themselves. Politics and civilization too far remove us from the basic urgencies in life that lead to kill-or-die decisions. I think militia-driven anarchy took serious root out here in the US of A. We seem to like believing that the Bogey Man is waiting in the forest till we're asleep. Buy into that trip, and you'll shoot at anything that stirs in the shadows.

A definition of rightful human existance?

Yeah, for the white man.

Don't forget what your ancestors did to the native Americans and the Negro slaves they stole from Africa.

American patriotism is disturbingly cult-like.... unquestioning and so very, very blind.

Don't like it? THEN GET THE FUCK OUT AND GO LIVE IN CANADA. This country was founded on christian principles, and, as the most recent election suggests, we have remained true to those principles. God bless George Bush and GOD BLESS THE USA!

We did not steal them and they were already slaves. They were sold to white men by BLACK slave traders. I love that idiots like you still have this vision of the white men running around africa with nets.

The native-american genocide.... WELL THAT WAS JUST FUN!!! But guess what champ? Not a single living American was involved in the indian genocide, yet we still dump assloads (billions and billions) of non-taxable income into indian casinos and tobacco outlets.

"Anti-Americanism is disturbingly cult-like.... unquestioning and so very, very blind."

Is what you meant to say.

I don't remember talking about white men running around Africa with nets. But please, explain to me how buying slaves is any less immoral than catching them yourself? I'm intrigued.

The native-american genocide.... WELL THAT WAS JUST FUN!!! But guess what champ? Not a single living American was involved in the indian genocide, yet we still dump assloads (billions and billions) of non-taxable income into indian casinos and tobacco outlets.
He was talking about the ideals your nation was founded on, Einstein.

Who said anything about living Americans?

Is what you meant to say.
Er... no.

Shut the fuck up, Jesus.

No, I meant France.

Under close examination, England was about as tolerant, diplomatic and equivocal as Japan -- history's other example of cultural xenophobia,
"islanded" by ritual. In the 18th century in England, as today in Nippon, folks got off the island to assert individuality. The colonization of Canada contained no such idelogical imperative. That's what I meant.

That's just what the pilgrims said when they first sighted the foggy Massachusetts coastline.
