Under close examination, England was about as tolerant, diplomatic and equivocal as Japan -- history's other example of cultural xenophobia,
"islanded" by ritual. In the 18th century in England, as today in Nippon, folks got off the island to assert individuality. The colonization of Canada contained no such idelogical imperative. That's what I meant.
