Panic attacks are horrible. But let me remind you that a real heart attack have the same symptoms. So be careful.

Square breathing.

Breathe in through your nose. Count to four. Exhale slowly through your mouth, as if you're 'blowing it away'. Gently. Count to four.

Repeat.

Also.

Slowly sip water.

Also.

Mentally check your body system. If you're having pain in your chest, pain in your left arm or jaw.....go to the ER.

Better to be safe and embarrassed than dead.

At one particularly stressed out point in my life, I was getting minor attacks (not full blown, just the tachycardia and sweats and so on). Half the problem was that I was thinking I had heart issues. My doctor gave me the following advice:

- If your chest hurts and you haven't been exercising, and it gets better by moving around and being active, it's a panic attack. Keep moving! It helps!

- If your chest hurts, radiates to your chin and arm, feels 'heavy' and gets WORSE by moving around, it's a heart attack. Move as far as a phone to call 9-1-1, then lie down. You can also try coughing very deeply... apparently, deep, chesty coughs have a massaging effect on the heart (go figure!)

They suck, but in the end you'll be fine. Hang in there.

I get them sometimes too.. it sucks.. I took X one time in my life. That was at the first ever Miami show. I had a panick attack that night. Never had one before and have had many since then. I think that X fucked me up. I'll never do any drugs again. I started to get them every now and then. Dr. gave me xanax and I would take it when I felt weird. But I think those taught me that its pretty much mental and you cause yourself to feel that way. Just takes some working through

Seriously.

Get up off the floor. Walk away from your laptop. Walk around.

I know it's a 'get over' thing.....although, finding the root cause would help your future.

For now, treat it symptomatically.

Breathe.
Sip water.
Walk.

Most definitely, get away from the computer.

I get a consistent one that last for days. It is strange, it will set in and I struggle to breath all day for a couple of weeks. I don't have one hard attack, but an extended timed release one.

Anyone else?

I have learned to control it by breathing exercises when I feel it coming on. I also have to watch my caffeine intake, seems to highly induce them.

remember, your body right now is in "flight or fight" mode. this is one of the earliest traits we as humans posess, going all the way back to early man. when i get them, and i'm feeling i'm about to die, i just remember what *exactly* is happening in my body:

you've got stress right now, and you've been keeping it bottled in, and something has triggered it. your pancreas has just blasted your blood stream with sugar in order to help you cope -- by fighting...or running away.

listen to the people who are telling you to breathe.

your life isn't in danger. you're not going to die, choke, have a heart attck, or go insane. you're under a lot of stress right now, and you'll get out of it in no time.

just breathe, and relax.

Thanks everyone - when I get these attacks I don't confuse them with a heart problem and I *know* it's sheer panic, just for a few minutes it seems like the whole world is closing in on me and like I willl die/someone will kill me

Again, thank you for all you help/support

Hey Kelly! Sounds like the storm has passed?

I dunno if you know this, but excercise, (esp. YOGA), staying away from refined sugars, and breathing excercises are all great ways to avoid these in the future.

Best of luck!

u should get a referral from a GP/family doctor to a psychiatrist if you're getting these frequently. Xanax will shut down a panic attack pretty fast so get a prescription from your doctor - don't use them when u don't need to though, you don't want to become dependent on it.

i used to take x about once a month. One night I had the mother of all panic attacks. From it, I suffered post traumatic stress disorder and was shacked up on the sofa for 3 months in a vegitative state, needing care like an invalid. When that subsided I was left with panic attacks. Now i take .25 mgs of clonazepam before bed and it does the trick. I maybe get a few mild ones a year.

muscle cramps AREN'T panic attacks.

I've been having panic attacks as long as I can remember. When you get the feeling of a panic attack, but with involuntary muscle cramps/twitches.. that means that your blood pressure is too high.. If you've had panic attacks before, the normal twitchiness you get is "i can't sit still" type thing.. you CAN force yourself to sit still though. it's just not pleasant. If you are twitching involuntarily and can't control it, get help.

Happened to me a few months ago.. my blood pressure went high enough to give me a mild stroke.
