Another scam! Who's running "spyware" or "adware" - GoFuckYourself.com

This company is installing files on people's computers that will pop up consoles (dialers, amongst other things) when people enter certain, usually high traffic, websites. This is another result of the wonderful Microsoft fuckup called security. Somehow using Encrypted JavaScript it's possible to run ActiveX programs of ANY kind on people's machines. So it's VERY easy to format someone's harddrive when they merely visit a website.

This company installed some "Browser Helper Object" which is an "invention" by MicroSoft to help people surf websites. Some ass took adventage of this though and is now popping consoles of wet4free.com and greatplugin.com. A very helpful submitted put together some info on how to disable this. I have an AVI movie on what's happening, if someone has an MPEG converter I can post it on-line (it's a huge AVI, about 13 Megs).

So if you run a high traffic site you might be affected by this also! There might be a big legal case here. You guys better check out if you're on the list of this screwer!

Try clicking on the 'Search' button your browswer toolbar. What comes up? Some crazy search engine called 'Sureseeker' with the 'Next' option disabled? Bet it does.

If you ask nicely I'll tell you who put THIS script out there.

It's a fucking hassle cos there ar etwo components, one is in your browser and you can use the 'Restore Internet Options' but there's also a second script in your startup menu.

If its up to me we do 1 big im src to their site all together at the same time and they will be down in a few mins. Those guys fuck with our computer well lets fuck them back. There seems to be a bit of mixing apples and oranges here. Changing a search page or home page by use of an active x component is child's play compared to the commercial use of adware. Adware isn't some kid sneaking a script onto a freehost tgp gallery or even a freehost sneaking a script into all the galleries.. Adware is the next big thing supported by the entire mainstream online advertising industry. It's being used by just about everybody offering free software (freeware) on the Net. When you download a tool to let you swap music files or accelerate your connectivity or put a news ticker on your desk top, etc., etc., you also get a file bundled with it that generates pop ups. Just setting your IE security setting to "prompt" won't prevent this the way it prevents changing a home page.. Upgrading to IE 6 won't prevent it either. Nor can you sue them because they disclose it in the terms and conditions of the download. Everybody reads the terms and conditions, right?

It sucks for you Hun. Everything you try to do by not allowing gallery pages with scripts is rendered useless. Surfers are going to visit your page and get a pop up and it's not your fault.

It sucks for gallery builders because their page will be on the browser when a pop up launches and they'll get reported as cheaters and banned - even though they didn't do anything.

It sucks for the surfer's privacy. The file that launches the pop up also transmits data about the surfer (where they go, etc.) back to the marketing firm and whoever else pays to read about it.

If you want to take a look at some of the firms producing the adware and selling space on the hated pop ups themselves check out sites like

Ect., etc. There's a million of them. Too many to img source them all I'd think. They'll most likely find the freebie they want isn't quite so free. And they'll learn where those dammed pop ups are coming from.

Thanks to Eric for this one:

1) From the Control Panel select ADD/REMOVE programs. Select ?Blackstone? and ?Remove?.

If Blackstone is not present:

2) Close all internet explorer browsers.

3) Search your "C" drive for IEHelper.dll

4) Delete IEHelper.dll

If the system does not permit the file to be deleted proceed as follows.

5) Select ?Start? and then ?Run? and type ?regedit?

6) Find the entry named "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows \ CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{00000000-5eb9-11d5-9d45-009027c14662}".

7) delete the {00000000-5eb9-11d5-9d45-009027c14662}entry.

8) Reboot computer.

9) Search your "C" drive for IEHelper.dll

10) Delete IEHelper.dll

Your entire post is very true... and thus, very scary. I have installed many different REPUTABLE pieces of software, only to find new icons on the desktop (the most harmless and easily deleted) and new previously unknown methods of sending me to websites I not only never intended to go to, but never knew existed. And you're right... no one is breaking the law by doing it. You agreed to all of it when you checked that little box off right before you got your software. (ahhh.... I have active X switched off in mine - I still get crap - my homepage got reset to megagogo or megago or whatever. No wonder I see their stats in my PPC listings.

Piece of shit company should be indicted. I tried to nail them for it, but they are apparently paying some people in poland to do this for them.

TheHun, you know that anyone could pay gator to put their ads on your site, right? Yes, the popups will go directly over your ads and as the user scrool down, the ads will follow over them. Also, anyone can buy keywords to have ads blasted directly when they go to certain websites.

It is ridiculous and some of it should be and probably is illegal. Imagine taking your car into service and then the radio every 15 minutes would say "Remember to bring your car back to Ima Scammer's car repair".

How is this any different. The FTC needs to go after a few of these companies - like they did with the SE Spammers that were spamming toys for childrens books and highjacking people's pages. After a few companies have their assets siezed - as far as I am concerned the megago (or however it is spelled) one is the worst - I have had that happen several times and they are doing this with goto. There should be an investigation into whether goto knows about this - and if so - they should be fined big time.

There is a simple way to block some of these companies using a hosts file, but someone would have to update it and and have system in place so that people could report new offenders.

I have no problem with aggressive advertising, but as soon as you change one byte on the permanent setup of my computer - you have crossed the line.

I've tried compressing the .avi as mpeg but the results where very poor. 32MB file

and quality was terrible. I think that the avi is the best way to go. Heck I'm more than happy to burn some BW for this cause, anyone can get the 12MB avi at http://www.tgpdb.com/popup_demo.avi if the BW gets out of hand I might have to remove it though

I can also make a smaller one if need be.

ZoneAlarm is great (http://www.zonealarm.com/) and I highly recommend it, but as long as zonealarm is configured to allow IE access to the net, the ActiveX' can be downloaded. Make sure that your IE security settings are at least at Medium. Then be very careful of what "signed" activeX' you download. Zone alarm will detect some adware once it's installed though.

Far worse than the program that the Hun is talking about are TopText and Surf+. These companies sell links on your website and don't pay you a penny. They will even go so far as to re-direct all of the existing links on you page to their advertisers. For example, they can sell the top 10 listings on The Hun, or any other site, to any paysite that they want. They are also known to sell adult links on kids sites like Disney.com.

No offense, as I know people that like it, but to me - installing anything by norton in the last 3-4 years is WORSE than having your home page changed or anything else.

I used to use them years ago, but they have gone downhill - way downhill in my opinion. At least adware doesn't install a whole bunch of crap I never asked for after paying for it. Don't know if they are still like that, but screw'em. A company screws up once in my opinion and they are on my blacklist forever.

A lot of freeware authors are very honest people and they wouldn't do anything like that. You would say, all *nix software is adware? But yes, be careful about free offers from bigger and unknown companies.

The Hun, CometCursor which you recommended to you visitors, was also AdWare. I mailed you about that last year, I think.

GreatPlugin.com is nothing to do with this scam. It is the Telcoweb activex dialer url - using standard activex technology, none of these java console exception exploits (that form the basis for autobookmarking/homepage).

If you have this software installed and it IS popping up this url, please email richard at gibhar.com with the ID that is on the end, and appropriate action will be taken to their account.

Hun, you've seen these popups first hand i assume, can you confirm that the GreatPlugin.com domain is being popped up ?

Just want to get this cleared up, dialers get a bad rep without people getting confused with something totally unrelated.

Could happen with all browsers, but the cockup in Microsofts Virtual Machine (which allows encrypted JavaScript to pull ANY action on a machine) makes it easier for people to install these programs. It could happen if you download and run any piece of software though... Gator is doing something like this (changing ads on a page).

I'm wondering... isn't there some way to find out, using JavaScript, what plugins people have installed? Also wondering, could these adware and spyware programs be detected this way? If so, it's very easy to redirect people to an instruction page with what they need to do to fix their problems...

Yes, you can use javascript to detect plugins, they do that with the hitbox counter. I wouldn't know how to write it but I am sure someone on this board could smith it up pretty quick.

Remember what we are dealing with here: traffic theft on a massive scale, copyright infringement, and program/plug-ins that behave in a virus-like way.

Ezula's Kazaa, one of the big culprits in spreading scumware like TopText, has soon been downloaded in 10 million copies, so this is definitely something to worry about and if possible take action against...

Who's running "spyware" or "adware" This company is installing files on people's computers that will pop up consoles (dialers, amongst other things) when people enter certain, usually high traffic, websites. This is another result of the wonderful Microsoft fuckup called security. Somehow using Encrypted JavaScript it's possible to run ActiveX programs of ANY kind on people's machines. So it's VERY easy to format someone's harddrive when they merely visit a website. This company installed some "Browser Helper Object" which is an "invention" by MicroSoft to help people surf websites. Some ass took adventage of this though and is now popping consoles of wet4free.com and greatplugin.com. A very helpful submitted put together some info on how to disable this. I have an AVI movie on what's happening, if someone has an MPEG converter I can post it on-line (it's a huge AVI, about 13 Megs). So if you run a high traffic site you might be affected by this also! There might be a big legal case here. You guys better check out if you're on the list of this screwer!

Changing a search page or home page by use of an active x component is child's play compared to the commercial use of adware. Adware isn't some kid sneaking a script onto a freehost tgp gallery or even a freehost sneaking a script into all the galleries.. Adware is the next big thing supported by the entire mainstream online advertising industry. It's being used by just about everybody offering free software (freeware) on the Net. When you download a tool to let you swap music files or accelerate your connectivity or put a news ticker on your desk top, etc., etc., you also get a file bundled with it that generates pop ups. Just setting your IE security setting to "prompt" won't prevent this the way it prevents changing a home page.. Upgrading to IE 6 won't prevent it either. Nor can you sue them because they disclose it in the terms and conditions of the download. Everybody reads the terms and conditions, right? It sucks for you Hun. Everything you try to do by not allowing gallery pages with scripts is rendered useless. Surfers are going to visit your page and get a pop up and it's not your fault. It sucks for gallery builders because their page will be on the browser when a pop up launches and they'll get reported as cheaters and banned - even though they didn't do anything. It sucks for the surfer's privacy. The file that launches the pop up also transmits data about the surfer (where they go, etc.) back to the marketing firm and whoever else pays to read about it. If you want to take a look at some of the firms producing the adware and selling space on the hated pop ups themselves check out sites like http://www.web3000.com/ http://www.radiate.com/ http://www.onflow.com/ http://www.cydoor.com/Cydoor/ http://www.webhancer.com/ http://www.whenu.com/ Ect., etc. There's a million of them. Too many to img source them all I'd think. If you want to help your surfers point them to a site like http://www.spychecker.com so before they download that file sharing tool they can check the freeware database. They'll most likely find the freebie they want isn't quite so free. And they'll learn where those dammed pop ups are coming from.

Imagine taking your car into service and then the radio every 15 minutes would say "Remember to bring your car back to Ima Scammer's car repair". How is this any different. The FTC needs to go after a few of these companies - like they did with the SE Spammers that were spamming toys for childrens books and highjacking people's pages. After a few companies have their assets siezed - as far as I am concerned the megago (or however it is spelled) one is the worst - I have had that happen several times and they are doing this with goto. There should be an investigation into whether goto knows about this - and if so - they should be fined big time. There is a simple way to block some of these companies using a hosts file, but someone would have to update it and and have system in place so that people could report new offenders. I think that the avi is the best way to go. Heck I'm more than happy to burn some BW for this cause, anyone can get the 12MB avi at http://www.tgpdb.com/popup_demo.avi if the BW gets out of hand I might have to remove it though I can also make a smaller one if need be. It's not very exciting though [/edit] BigDaddy, ZoneAlarm is great (http://www.zonealarm.com/) and I highly recommend it, but as long as zonealarm is configured to allow IE access to the net, the ActiveX' can be downloaded. Make sure that your IE security settings are at least at Medium. Then be very careful of what "signed" activeX' you download. For example, they can sell the top 10 listings on The Hun, or any other site, to any paysite that they want. They are also known to sell adult links on kids sites like Disney.com. Sigh Also, you can go here and download a small program that will find all offending scripts in your computer and purge them: http://www.webattack.com/get/adaware.shtml It seems that the Internet Advertising Bureau board of directors is considering a lawsuit against gator.com....article here: http://www.newsbytes.com/news/01/169264.html Also, as a side note....there is a small script some of you might want to add to your sites to deactivate 'toptext': http://www.ipagedir.com/ezula/deactivate.toptext.htm Of course eventually, companies will come up with a way around the script....but it does work for now.
