Could happen with all browsers, but the cockup in Microsofts Virtual Machine (which allows encrypted JavaScript to pull ANY action on a machine) makes it easier for people to install these programs. It could happen if you download and run any piece of software though... Gator is doing something like this (changing ads on a page).

I'm wondering... isn't there some way to find out, using JavaScript, what plugins people have installed? Also wondering, could these adware and spyware programs be detected this way? If so, it's very easy to redirect people to an instruction page with what they need to do to fix their problems...
