Your entire post is very true... and thus, very scary. I have installed many different REPUTABLE pieces of software, only to find new icons on the desktop (the most harmless and easily deleted) and new previously unknown methods of sending me to websites I not only never intended to go to, but never knew existed. And you're right... no one is breaking the law by doing it. You agreed to all of it when you checked that little box off right before you got your software. (ahhh.... "FREE" really ISN'T free after all) And you can bet your ass that this did NOT come from some script kid wanting to make a quick buck from a sponsor. This was highly thought out, engineered, developed, and polished, by large companies with fat bank accounts, well dressed attorneys, and some very intelligent programmers.
Being on the outside lookin' in is never much fun.
