Eventually, the governments of western countries will figure out that laws concerning age verification for sites don't shield minors from adult content on the internet. There are always countries with other laws, after all.

Anyone else think that it's quite likely that filtering adult content at the ISP level (i.e. the ISP filters out adult content/sites unless the customer has supplied proof of age) will become mandatory in the next 5-10 years?

I suppose it's possible. Schools even try to do this though and they get shot down. It's too hard to control plus the free speech issue usually wins.

The free speech wins for now because there are no filtering methods accurate enough to only filter adult.... they always end up also filtering out medical sites and such.
Plus, free speech isn't that much of an issue if any adult has the possibility to get rid of the filter when they want to.

Is there any way to 100% verify a person is of legal age to view the material.?? . NOPE and there never will be.. ( aside from manual verification i.e. in person )

Let me play devil's advocate for a while.

It is quite clear that the current method is NOT working. Adult content isn't just easily accessible for children, it's really hard to avoid even if you try.

Saying that parents should control their children doesn't cut it. Compare it to the real world... ofcourse, parents have to take care of their own children, but fucking in the street is illegal, as is giving adult magazines or alcohol to children. An ISP offering unrestricted access to porn can be compared to a store allowing children to read through the Playboys in the magazine rack.

Lets say i have a page called widgets.com that sells assorted widgets.. i wont be filtered. If i place a picture on that page of a naked woman , the isp cant tell i have changed the picture instantly. It would take manual verification. With literally thousands of new porn sites opening up daily, this is fairly futile.

With your argumentation you shouldn't be calling people morons. Has it ever occurred to you that for politicians, "protecting children from porn" gives better publicity than "doing nothing"?
The fact that no method will have a 100% success rate does not mean that politicians will just do nothing. 90% is better than 0%.

Parents allowing children is like them allowing their children to go outside. The internet has gained an extremely dominant position in everyday life, and is even necessary for many school projects.

Verifying age is quite easy at the ISP level. Not the age of the surfer, mind you, but the age of the person requesting the filter to be disabled. That way, only those who want to will have access to porn.

I'm not in favor of this myself, but I do think it is extremely likely that it will happen in the next 10 years.

If you let your child have access to the internet he/she will most likely end up a paranoid schizophrenic with severe sexual issues..

I let my children access certain sites , but when they do they are monitored 100% of the time by s-video monitor duplication so i can see everything they do.

What Germany did is extremely effective for adult *sites* based in Germany. A similar system for *ISPs* would probably shield Germans under 18 from adult content entirely. Now, imagine a system like that being implemented in other countries.

Yes, I agree. And have a look at germany: they force the adults to proof legal age by mail - not e-mail! The surfer has to go to the mail office and gets his access code. That´s why the german webmasters can´t earn a cent any longer.

If you just look at stuff like COPA, it is clear that adult stuff on the internet is an important target for politicians.

Just imagine what would happen if ISPs started requiring proof of age to allow access to adult sites. Many potential customers would be blocked from online porn yet unwilling to officially request access to porn.

But my solution does guarantee that a child cant access porn 100% MONITORING OF YOUR OWN CHILDREN !!! Every solution that has been posed so far does not even come close to keeping children from seeing porn.
