Man, you're an idiot. For all you know, the guy is plenty happy. I know so many people that work shitty mundane jobs that are as happy as larry. They've got enough money to provide for themselves and their families, and they just go about doing their thing.

Elitist assholes like you deserve to be kicked in the face. Especially when you're a broke bitch yourself.

Mutt 09-05-2004 11:38 PM

come back in 20 years and give us a full report on what you did with your life - it's a luxury of youth to be able to dream and assume a great future - most fall far short of those dreams.

my uncle was a moron but he had one great skill - his ability to sell, he worked for 10 years at Sears as a salesman. And even in the 80's he made more than 90% of this board. He made about 75k and my aunt made about the same - nice income for two people without college degrees. He left Sears and went on to sell home improvements, and made more than 100k/year. One day I went on his sales calls with him - omg what a bullshit artist, he was a master - no way in the world could i do what he did. not sure i would tho even if i could. i worked at a stereo shop, big one, and was trained to do alot of bait n switch, ethnic profiling etc - i sucked, i got people the best deal i could on stuff that was decent quality.

RIP Big Mac

Christ that's about how long it's been for me too. Can't even recall what the hell I was looking for. Something in the sporting good section I think. Maybe a tent.... or was it a cooler?

Noop, it's not coming to me.

Oddly... many people did this for years of their lives - this guy is not alone.

Some have been shoe salesman and hell knows what else. Some may like their jobs, others not. I sure would not be "looking down" on anyone because of this - it's their life and choice, or maybe "necessity".

I can think of one friend who "likes" to grow shit in his garden (or any damned field he can find!). He then goes along to a market and stands there selling the "produce".

He has a simple life in that aspect and anyone buying fruit from him don't come rushing on to GFY and saying what an ass he is because they spoke to him for 10 minutes.

The "other side" to this guy is he has a masters degree, Phd and is a prolific writer for .. what's it called? *g*.. National Geographic.

He has done loads of projects from China to the Gallapagos Islands. In the last year, he has completed another in UAE which involved over 2000 people and is now a "model" being picked up by the UN as a method of "cultivating the desert".

I have his CV on my desk right now - every damned page puts me to shame - loaded with "credits" from UN to UNESCO - about 50-60 pages long, - with letters of thanks from the goverments of a good few countries.

This is the 47 year old guy who sells fruit at a market :winkwink:

Appearances can be deceptive....

PS... I am damned proud this guy is on our team for a project we are doing - I could never have wished for a more qualified person and a loyal as hell friend.

Al Bundy was a shoe salesman. Look how happy HE was.

You know, speaking of Sears products, I once bought a 19" color tv, second-hand mind you, off my brother when I was about 20 years old. It was a Sears, and was already about 12 years old, and I STILL have that old tv and it still works, and it STILL has a great picture. I've never once had to take it in for service either. Damn thing is over 30 years old by now.

Hell yeah! :glugglug

Think some folks may surprise us if we care to give them the time of day and not "assume" and pigeonhole :-)

Dunno... seems to be just lately I've come across a load of people who, at "face value" are not of "note". But hell.. they are the "cream" you never thought existed and qualified to the gills in both academic terms and experience :-)

Each to his/her own! :winkwink:

Problem is... it's probably true :-)

Semi-Retired-Dave 09-06-2004 01:15 AM

A friend once told me, most people work to live, and that I live to work. I think that is so True. You really need to have that drive, some people are just happy with anything. Not me, and most of us around here. We just love what we do so we make the best of it, if you love what you do, success will follow.

To each his own.

People are more than their net worth.

If you think otherwise, then you've got pretty damn sad priorities.

either that or hes a hardcore loser with no ambition and a love of cheap booze and cheaper women. what the hell do I know..
just my :2 cents:

Totally agree! :thumbsup

Often in "our world" (the "civilized" world) - the tendency is to have "learned" (depending on the culture of society) to have a lesser regard for... ie people from the "third world". They are often regarded as "non people" by both individuals and governments.

Tis all bullshit!! :-) A farmer in Afghanistan could teach me some shit and often be more hospitable than many in the "western world" - and at the same time be more honest and loyal. Sadly we "think" we know it all sometimes :-)

PS... He would probably be able to teach me how to cultivate poppies for the drug trade - but we all gotta do something :glugglug

reynold 09-06-2004 02:48 AM

Plus the sales rep gets respect cuz he WORKS for his money instead of getting on the dole/welfare/public assistance.

BTW some people just want a simple life with a wife, two kids, some friends, a job, a house, a car, and two weeks vacation per year and they are happy..why does everyone need to achieve more than that?

There are lots of "loosers" and people who just don't need anything more out there. They are needed to keep the society going, if everybody wanted to run his own company we'd have a problem.

I'd actually prefer the older people selling me stuff. Without them working the grunt jobs I'd get some dumb ass still in high school who doesn't know shit selling me the TV.

Damn, wish I would have found this thread earlier. Rhino, I can't believe how many ignorant assumptions you made with your initial post. If the guy has been selling for ten years in that dept he's mostly good at what he does. Despite your one time assessment, they don't let you continue to sell year after year unless you are proficient at it, especially high ticket items. Also, anyone that is above average in sales generally will not want to go into management because they can make more in commissions than the salary structure of management. I can assure you he is making probably twice what you think he is.

What makes you think that just because he's in sales that he didn't get an education? Sales is by far the one job where education is non porportional to your income. I graduated college with an accounting and finance degree, yet soon realized that if I wanted to make good money quickly, sales was where it was at. I never used anything from my degrees and worked my twenties in outside sales and eventually into corporate sales management. I have a friend who is 26 with a psychology degree who made 115k last year selling women's shoes at Nordstroms. He wears a suit and flirts with women all day, is he a loser with no ambition since he's in retail sales?

What's the difference between selling tvs or selling porn, you're in sales just like he is. We all have goals and ambitions and different circumstances that dictate the choices we make. Hopefully this thread has taught you never to judge another man until you walk in his shoes.

http 09-07-2004 12:59 AM

This thread stinks

Living For Today 09-07-2004 03:07 AM

You've got it good. I don't really know you so i don't know how you got to where you are but I did see your car in the other thread so obviously things are going well for you. But in this world some people have to be the plebs in order for you to continue your way of life. My dad worked hard all his life and didn't have to many opportunities but he brought up a good family and is fairly happy with life. It's not all about money :)

If I was in his shoes, I would put a bullet in my head. What is life if you spend it doing nothing? Wasting so much time that you work at Sears, not even a fucking manager! Just a regular grunt.

He probobly makes 20-25k a year...but if it makes him happy, then who am I to say he has lived a wasted life? My opinion? I will never settle for ordinary, and I dont believe that anyone else should either.

Get an education, get a good job, get a life worth living!

This is a random rant because I'm buzzed...getting to be drunk though, quite soon :). just a few more drinks..

my friend's dad work at sears and he's 50 years old. i don't see anything wrong with that. live and let live.
