This is pathetic for the US...

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5829707/

"...The number of people living in poverty rose by 1.3 million to 35.9 million people, or 12.5 percent of the population, up from 12.1 percent in 2002.

The rise was more dramatic for children. There were 12.9 million living in poverty last year, or 17.6 percent of the under-18 population. That was an increase of about 800,000 from 2002, when 16.7 percent of all children were in poverty...."

It's just pathetic and shameful to live in a country where Presidential candidates spend millions of dollars slamming eachothers war records and debating over all the stupid shit they do, when almost 20% of the kids living in this country don't have access to decent housing, healthcare or any of the other basics they need for simple survival.

It's getting harder and harder these days to actually say the words "Proud American"

The economy is turning the corner!

Say it 12 times in a row and it starts to make sense.

America is the wealthiest country in the world, but the average American is not wealthy. The majority of the wealth is held by a small percentage of Americans.

Its Ms. Fix it all thank you very much...and I live here in the US...and just think it is truly pathetic to live in a country that is supposedly one of the wealthiest, most advanced in the world, that spends billions of $$$ each year in foreign aid, but yet has 20% of its own kids going to bed hungry every night, pays farmers allowances to NOT farm, has workers who spend more hours at work on average than any other country in the world, and just revamped the overtime laws to screw millions of people out of pay, has a welfare system that is set up to keep people on it forever instead of helping them actually become self sufficient.....all of this while we are getting slammed daily by stupid fucking ads about what liars our leader and wannabe leaders are....

Just seems ridiculous and pathetic.....

Nope its not the governments job to provide for everyone...never said that at all....

What I will say though is that if you have a single person who busts their ass to provide for their kids and pays into the system, then they should be able to see some benefit from doing so. The same with senior citizens who have paid into the system for years and worked hard, only to find out that all that social security they paid into means they are stuck eating cat food and going without that medication they truly need.....

so go donate some of your money to these people.... i had nothing 9 years ago and then found out my girlfriend , now wife, was pregnant. i went out, took a bunch of student loans, went to school and worked fulltime . it took me 4 years to pay off the loans which were 298 a month, that seemed like big money at that moment in my life but i did it anyways and made sacrifices.

Thats right.

Thats why we're a federal republic and not a democracy.

I hate it when people think its the governments responsibility to take care of the people.

Its not.

Its the peoples responsibility to take care of themselves and the government.

By the way, the Flat Tax RULES!!

Yes, but if they're illegal, that means they don't pay taxes, nor elegible to vote and thusly aren't on the census. Aside from allegedly being a capital drain on social services (which they more than amply make up for as cheap, benefits-free labour) they're total nonentities from a statistical basis.

All those poor people tallied in this study are 'legit' poor.

I get a shiver when I hear people complain about 'immigrants taking jobs'. It reminds me of back in the 20s, when the *exact* same things were said about chinese, mexican and black workers, for basically the same reason: White people felt entitled to the jobs, so they vilify the 'immigrant' who have them with the expectation that the jobs will end up going to 'who they belong'.

But you can't just point at some chinese guy and say "He's inferior, therefore I should have his job". No, you need to have moral high ground.

Well, back in the day chinese labourers working in the factories would puff a little opium before going to work. Chasing the dragon helped alleviate the mind-numbing tedium of factory assembly... aha. Leverage, and a clear physical thing to point to as an indication of inferiority.

Soon enough opium was illegal, and other drugs followed: Marijuana to smack down the mexicans, MJ + cocaine for blacks (particularly jazz muscians, which were considered deeply deeply 'amoral' by any right-thinking patriot).

What's the point of this? Well, the conditions are ripe for a revisitation of the temperance society, and the wilfull vilification of minorities in a cynical attempt to 'reclaim' jobs for whitey. Any student of history will know that the jobs didn't help for shit during the depression, and the resulting prohibition provided the most fertile ground for organized crime to bloom and prosper.

History may not repeat itself, but it DOES rhyme. It'll be interesting to see what subcultures will be vilified this time around... I'm thinking be mexicans once again, followed closely by anyone in a turban... and this time it won't be alcohol cracked down on. Which vices will they decide to rigorously supress this time, I wonder.

While I was in the US I watched an article on CNN about a survey that said under Bush the few rich got richer and the many poor got poorer. Which frightens me, because we produce porn for the many average Joes, not the rich guys.

He nmay have given a few rich people a tax break, but how many ordinary people don't have jobs or enough money to surf?

what a stupid reply. i wasnt stating anything about what we spend on war or what countries we invade. what i WAS saying is that if you are willing to work and make sacrifices you wont end up being a statistic. it amazes me that a lot of people in this country think that they are owed something for doing nothing and not willing to work for it.

32... but as a student of history, I the patterns are there for all to see. The situations aren't COMPLETELY congruent, of course (that was then, this is now) but it surely seems like history is rhyming again... serious economic slowdown for all but the richest 'robber barons', increasing gentrification and barriers to class mobility, the increasingly strident tones used against immigrants in popular media that is heavily influenced by money and political power...

Gets a guy to thinking, if he's got a little background information to start thinking from.

Actually I thought your replies were from someone that was 14, but seeing your woman was pregnant 9 years ago thats obviously not the case.

Regardless you have a lot of life learning to do. Maybe the day will come (probably not) that you will have enough sense to realize as the rate of poverty goes down society as a whole improves. Crime goes down, the economy flourishes because more people have money to spend, people get sick less often, etc. Obviously you could give a fuck about any of that or what type of world you live in.

Says the man who depends on the government. Hypocrite. $1000 says you'll gladly cash your first social security check. if you mean what you'd say you tear up the Socialism Security check, but you won't

You're really going to have to dumb it down a notch if you want to be understood by the average GFY'er.

Other than that you're on a roll.

To Paraphrase:

Shit that happened back in the day can happen again. Right now, it's like back before prohibition days: the Rich are getting way richer, the poor are getting poorer, and the brown and yellow people are getting blamed for having jobs that hungry white people want. It gets stirred up even more because the fat cats own the so-called news and its easy to make people think what you want them to think when you have the same message on every screen, in every radio and on every newspaper.

Makes a guy wonder "wtf".
How's that?

The more intelligent people outside the US know that there isn't wonderland and lots of people in the US actually work all day just to pay for food and rent. And I don't mean the european all day (8-9 hours) but totally 16+ hours on 2 or 3 jobs.

Actually, they do show up on the census but there are probably higher numbers of illegal immigrants than the US Census department has record of. Their result for 2000 was 8-11 million.

Illegals are given free healthcare at the government's expense.

Most of the illegals have children. These children are educated in our schools.

Many illegals cross the border to give birth and therefore their children are legal while the parent's are illegal. These children are eligible and receive WIC, welfare, free lunches, etc. in addition to the above mentioned free school and healthcare (which includes dental up to the age of 18).

There is a HUGE difference between legal and illegal immigrants and I believe you'll find that those who came here in the 20's were mostly legal immigrants

Kudos to you

To many people in this country are looking for a free handout.
I have no sympathy for them. You and only you are responsible for your own choices.

The only ones I feel sympathy for are the kids because it isn't their fault that they are a product of ignorant self serving parents.

There is no reason in the world to fail in this country. Opportunity is everywhere. You just need to get off your lazy ass and work for it.

want to cure poverty?
sterilize the poor. They're too fucking stupid to keep their legs closed.

oh, and I'd remind you dopes that here in america..................
1. 41 percent of all "poor" households owned their own homes. The average size of that home was three bedrooms, one-and-a-half bathrooms, a garage and a porch or patio. Three-quarters of a million "poor" owned homes worth over $150,000; some of those homes sported Jacuzzis and pools.

2. Seventy percent of "poor" households own a car; 27 percent own two or more cars. Ninety-seven percent have a color television; nearly half own two or more televisions. Two-thirds of "poor" households have air conditioning

perhaps these "poor" should swap places with the poor of the Sudan.

No. Please don't. I find solace in his response's The average GFY'er is not even going to take the time to read it let alone understand it. Hence, why you have some of the responses that we have here.

I find it quite sad that in this day in age there are that many homeless/poor etc., in the US and Canada. There is no reason for it, yet it still exists. One can argue many points, but the matter of the fact is our governments are giving money away to help out other countries, putting money up for wars etc., but still can't manage to feed our own. True, tis not the governments job to feed and house the people, but come on now, there are many reasons why people are hungry and homeless. Children should not be suffering in 1st world countries. Simply put, there is just no need.

This time I blame whitey!

Have you done much work with the homeless? The TRULY homeless, i.e. those you see on the streets are there because they choose to be. Many have mental problems but they refuse the free mental care they can get. Ditto with those who are addicted - completely free help, which would cost me thousands of dollars if I wanted it - is refused. Many have families that are more than willing to take them in, but they refuse. They choose to be homeless.

Children and their parents are given shelter, food, clothing, healthcare, education, daycare while the parent is seeking a job, the parent is given free educational classes for jobs, help with filling out applications, bus passes, etc.

If the children are "suffering" it is because the parents either refuse the help they are given or refuse to pass the help to their children. The government, at least in the US, is sitting there literally handing out freebies.

This is all very true. The problem i sthat there are many people living in this country, making good money and cheating the government.

I know in long island NY alone, there are many latinos that do that. Take the Hamptons. There's a huge latino population living there. I know latinos that live there, work off the books, pull over $80,000 a year and only report $12,000 to the government. I know many., many people there who do that!!

I also know people in other parts that do the same thing,. My parents have friends..she's a hair dresser in her home, I know for a fact she pulls over $4,000 a month and her husband another $4,000 a month. They have a huge expensive home, nice cars, kid in private school, trips all the time. And they both file that they each make under $20,000 a year.

SO I know there are many people living in this country that don't report their wages, live good lives and get away with it!

Yes I have, and on many different levels and am well aware of the mental illnesses. I also use to do a lot of volunteer work at a mental health hospital. I voluteered in Vancouver right down in the nitty gritty of it all. I have experience, the blame whitey part was just for shits and giggles in response to Ricks posts.

Canada does the same thing, however, I still do not think that this day in age anyone in either country should be "poor".
