Actually, they do show up on the census but there are probably higher numbers of illegal immigrants than the US Census department has record of. Their result for 2000 was 8-11 million.
Illegals are given free healthcare at the government's expense.
Most of the illegals have children. These children are educated in our schools.
Many illegals cross the border to give birth and therefore their children are legal while the parent's are illegal. These children are eligible and receive WIC, welfare, free lunches, etc. in addition to the above mentioned free school and healthcare (which includes dental up to the age of 18).
There is a HUGE difference between legal and illegal immigrants and I believe you'll find that those who came here in the 20's were mostly legal immigrants
