I actually read an article in the newspaper that indicated that Romania gives its gold medal winners and additional 50k, I believe the US gives its winner 25 (I could be wrong) and even Kenya gives its gold winners a flat screen tv washer and a dryer. Canadian gold medal winners receive nothing.

Well interestingly enough, a lot of the Canadian olympians do live below the poverty line. Why is it that Hockey players are paid millions of dollars, where as these athletes receive next to nothing - though they train just as hard, if not harder.

They were having a debate on CBC newsworld today saying the athletes are underfunded...but one guy said rewarding athletes who do well just increases the incentive to cheat and use illegal substances

I haven't seen any Canadian athletes with commercial deals except for Patrica Felecien (sp?).

I was watching a documentary awhile ago on Daniel Igali, gold medal winner for Canada in Sydney. Even after he won gold, he didn't receive any sponsorship deals, he had to ask Cheerios to sponsor him after meeting one of the execs at an award ceremony.

Well everyone knows drugging runs rampant in the Olympics regardless if there is a payout or not - look at Ben Johnson.

I am glad in the advent of new drug testing these athletes will lose their medals should they be caught.

As a side note, look at Germany in the 80's, their athletes were apparently given steroids without even knowing it (apparently - but you explain how one day yu have tits, the next they disapear and you have two testicles). I am not sure as to whether or not they reaped any financial benefits - but I feel it was more about national pride more so than anything.

They don't automatically qualify for funding, it's only the top athletes that do. They even increased the standards over the past few years.

The Canadian government has more delegates in Greece than we have atheletes there. In the news the other day, they had featured a member of the female weightlifting (I think it was weightlifting - too lazy to do a search) team.

They receive so little funding that she had to wear her Quebec uniform while representing Canada. She actually sewed a Canadian flag on her uniform so it at least looked like she represented this country.
