I hang out with all types of people, i dont feel i have to change my appearance every time i hang with a different person that happens to fall into one of those "labeled categories". God, some people just push all my buttons and piss me off to no end. I'm white and in the household I grew up in expressing any sort of racist view was near enough the worst crime you could commit. Thank god for parents like that.
I know that I had great grandparents that weren't so open minded but we were taught about their views and told they were WRONG. At eight I found out that when my great grand mother (not blood thankfully, dad was adopted) died they found a Klan hood in her closet. It tainted any memories I had of her and I demanded - at 8 - that it was destroyed. The point is that all it takes is one generation to stop the racist views from being passed down. In my own life I have unwritten rules for picking friends. If I ever hear someone who I am becoming close to make even a slightly racist comment I can't be their friend, just can't. |
