Atkins Diet: Completed 1st week

For those of you on Atkins, after reading all the threads and wanting to try it for so long I went ahead and started last monday.

After 1 week I've already lost 9 lbs, and clothes that were starting to get tighter are feeling comfortable again.

Pretty cool stuff man I can't wait to see myself after the first month.

The first week is the big loss week, then you level off and lose at comfortable rate if you follow. Every week is not 9 lbs, lots of water loss in first week, takes some time to convert the fat to water.

Congrats on your commitment, wish you all the best!

Oh I know not to expect 9 lbs every week...LOL I would be heart broken if I did

Honestly I lost like 5 pounds the very first day. I knew exactly what that was because I was pissing like a Russian Race Horse.

and thx for the wishes. I'm totally commited now. After 1 week seeing not just the results, but feeling the results I've been nothing but excited.

I think I'm driving my family nuts talking about it trying to get them to try it as well.

I've also started walking again, 15-20 minutes every other day.

One thing I like about this is how it is attacking my sugar addiction. Got over the caffeine awhile back, but damn man I'm hooked on that white powdery stuff ;)

actually from what I've read and understood the diet takes you through a process where you eventually get to a maintenance diet. and at that point you are eating an amount of carbs that should allow you to maintain your weight goal.

So I guess that's a no, you won't gain it back unless you go over that maintenance level.

I lost 45lbs over 3 months on the Atkins diet. That was over a year ago and the weight is still off.

I think I'm going to experiment with Atkins over the winter months. I'm a total carb head (need lots of them for cycling & trail running), but I usually slow down alot from november to february or march.

Hey congratulations Cary, does anyone have a link or something for this, I could use dropping the spare tire myself. I already started working out regularly and some walking so adjusting my diet should go a long way. Thanks.

Edit: nevermind the link I found myself http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&i...&q=atkins+diet

You can lose weight just as fast while eating whatever you want. I've lost 10 pounds in 12 days. And its not coming back when I eat carbs, because I've been eating them the whole damn time.

Ketosis for long periods of time is NOT healthy...

A low calorie diet with good workout is MUCH more effective..

For those of you that have tried the Atkins diet what did you notice happened to your energy level. I don't mean if you just sat around working all day and got up to go take a pee once in a while. I'm talking about any of you that keep up with some sort of strenuous physical activity.

I'm asking because I race bikes and I've always found that I need lots of carbs and calories to be able to do the longer mileage rides and races... anything over 60 miles or so. I don't really want to lose much over 10 pounds or so but I'm having trouble getting rid of some fat around my waist. My legs, arms and shoulders are ripped but I carry some excess fat around my chest and abs that I'd like to get rid of. I thought maybe the Atkins diet would be worth a try but I can't afford to run low on energy.

Today made one week for me on Atkins as well. I lost 7lbs.

I lost a little over 40lbs a couple of years ago on this diet and kept it off for quite some time....just been really lazy and overeating too much this past year and put it all back on plus 5lbs.

BTW, your designer ripped me off. (have to throw that in every chance I get....LOL)

Hit me up on ICQ 127027910 so I can see what you're talking about.

edited to add: if you speak about either dirty d or captain p they are not our designers...they don't work for us we don't work for them.

Diabolical Galleries was a joint project with them, but honestly they have not been involved for well over 8-10 months.

Those are the two dickheads I was referring to.
Only reason I hired them was because I assumed they were part of your team. And the galleries they built for you were really nice.

I'm sorry that happened, apparently you were not the only one.

However as far as designing galleries, they only designed theirs, we have designed ours or hired out talented gallery makers like FletchXXX, Hoax, TGF, and Marian at madthumbs.

But as I stated above, they have not really had any part in DiabolicalGalleries in well over 10 months.

They own the domain name and the design which is about it, and my partner MarcS did all of the back end scripting etc.

All the galleries that are created each day are created by myself, my partner and 1 other webmaster we've allowed to put his galleries into the system.

These guys like I said have had zero involvement in a long time.

We have tried to contact them ourselves and find it very difficult to do so. Marc might reach them once a month if that much.

I hope they eventually clear these issues up, because quite honestly these guys had a stellar reputation in this biz long before I was even considering the adult net.

Once again my apologies.

Congrats, man. I've been on it for about 3 weeks now, I've gone from 248 to 228 and have stabilized at 230. My target is 195.

that's great to hear.

I've got a long ways to go, but I can see myself sticking to this for a long time.

I've never eaten better in my life. My main problem was keepign with a decent meal time and eating regularly.

so I'd end up snacking on and off all day to make up for meals I missed.

I now make sure I make time to sit down and eat a breakfast, lunch and dinner along with a couple of snacks like maybe a boiled egg etc.

My starting weight was 320, I now weigh 311 my target is 160 as I am only 5 foot 6 1/2 inches

The positive process stops when you start eating sugar and fast carbs but one occational icecream will not do much damage. As the negative process only continues with the constant input of more fast carbs (fex sugar).

It may do more damage to your head as it can set the sweetness urge going again...

Many talk about getting all "stoved" up, they used fiber pills and it solved that problem.

Wonderful news to everyone taking control back of their lives. Atkins is a GREAT weight loss program but to keep it off you have to make a lifestyle change and STICK to it.

Depending on your age metabolisms slow down and eating half the calories you used to eat years ago could create excess pounds.

For those starting this program you should create a blog and add some photo's, its a great motivator to you as well when you hit the 6 week blues and your tolerance for eating healthy wanes a little.

So far that has not been an issue with me.

I had my gall bladder removed about 2 1/2 years ago since then within 5 minutes of finishing a meal I have to make a mad dash to the restroom.

This diet has corrected that.

I think this is one of the more appropriate threads for me to make my **1000th** post!

First off EM, CONGRATS! Indeed the first 5-10 pounds you lose is water weight, and there will be plateau's where you don't lose weight for awhile, but as the most recent studies point out, it's just as effective if not more than the old "low fat" diet Americans have been on. Keep on keeping on!

I've lost 33 pounds over the last 4 months. I eat regularly, and I eat well. I've had no problem keeping the weight off.

I'm a type II diabetic..my blood sugar readings are well back into the "normal" range now. My levels have improved so much that my doc has reduced the medication I take.

My blood pressure is now around 100/70. Was up around 140/80
Cholesterol count has improved. Energy level has improved.
And I don't starve myself on this diet. And yes, I work out too.

A few people asked some questions/made some statements, so here are some quick answers:

"You can lose weight just as fast while eating whatever you want.
I've lost 10 pounds in 12 days. And its not coming back when I
eat carbs, because I've been eating them the whole damn time."

Some people do lose weight this ways, others have tried and can't! You do whatever rocks your boat. And this misconception that you don't eat carbs is ridiculous! The first 2 weeks where your body is adjusting to burning off fat instead of carbs is when you try to keep your intake of carbs to 20 grams a day or less.
Then after you get the weight off, you can increase the carbs up to a point that your in "maintenance" (not losing, not putting on weight). Add to that that you eat much healthier, fiberous carbs like broccoli, asparagus, cauliflower, spinach, green beans, etc is a big plus as opposed to eating starchy carbs like bread & pasta. Though low carb bread and pasta can be used if you want it.
------------------------------------

"A low calorie diet with good workout is MUCH more effective.."

Not true, recent studies comparing Atkins to the Heart associations low fat diet shows BETTER loss of weight and improvement in diabetic related illness, cholesterol, blood pressure, etc. This diet with a good workout is just as effective if not more effective than a low calorie or low fat diet. One big benefit of this diet is that you don't have to starve yourself to loose weight.
-----------------------------

"if you go no carbs ofr a week, or like 2-3 weeks...loose
some weight then go low carb, will you gain it back?"

First off, you don't DO no carbs..Atkins strongly advises against that. The guidelines calls for lower carb consumption and fiberous carbs as opposed to starchy carbs. I don't know what would happen if you do no carbs for a week and then go low carb but I seriously doubt you will gain weight BACK that way.
-------

"For those of you that have tried the Atkins diet what did
you notice happened to your energy level."

For me (and I've read for many others), there is a big UPSWING in your energy level. Losing pounds you don't have to carry around obviously helps, but getting rid of sugar which REALLY has a number on your energy level along with starchy complex carbs helps the body maintain it's energy as opposed to "energy mood swings."
------------------------

I was one of the BIGGEST critics and skeptics about the Atkins diet. But I bought into the whole rumor mill about all you eat is high fat and meat and you can't have veggies! What a totally fabrication that is. After doing a strict low fat diet for a year, and losing basically ZERO pounds, I knew I had to do something else. Posts on GFY actually convinced me to try it. I'm glad I did!

Here's a link that's a great source of information, products, as well as a great support message board!

Congrats guys, I have a co-worker here who swears by it as well.

I am more a healthy 4 food group + exercise guy - I don't feel that "weight loss" is a good way to measure your level of health. But everyone has their own plan, and I'm glad to hear so many people are feeling better.

Funny, just read an article about that diet as it seems to be diet of choice for Hollywood celebs.

Everyone agrees it's the most effective weight-loss diet, however, they also agree it's one of the most dangerous diets to your health.

High risk of getting heart disease and especially diabetes.

di·a·be·tes
Any of several metabolic disorders marked by excessive discharge of urine and persistent thirst, especially one of the two types of diabetes mellitus.

#1 thx for your response Centurion. It was all the GFY atkins threads that finally got me motivated to actually try it as well.

re: your post..and in particular what I quoted.

This part is so damn true.

Yeah I'm eating some high fat, high protein things too. But I'm eating more healthier vegetables than I have in ages, of course I'm on induction so it's limited.

but still, I am making improvements in that direction of my personal diet. I buy fresh vegetables nothing canned.

I've pretty much stopped eating anything that's processed other than bacon and canned tuna.

I have a very small desire to snack on crap foods but each day that desire gets smaller and smaller, where in the past that's all I ate.

T.V. dinners for lunch, fast food for dinners, chips, candy and sodas for snacks.

People might wander why I just couldn't start eating healthier without having to follow some book's guidelines.

The only thing I could say is just that I have tried it, and in the past I've always felt hunger and a need for protein and I had a serious addiction to sugar.

This book just seemed to make sense. Everything seemed to click and explain how my body seems to work and crave all that crap.

I'm in this for the long haul. I'm 36 years old and have already been told by my doctors that i would be diabetic within a year and I need to start taking a baby aspirin once a day because I'm in that prime age for a heart attack.

Well I want to prove them wrong. And will.

Neither would I in regards to people who only need to lose 10-20 pounds.

but in my case of starting off at 320 pounds my health does increase with every pound lost..there's no denying that.

There's less stress on my body, my heart, it does affect you in regards to diabetes, high blood pressure etc.

The real measure of success in my opinioni will be getting as close to possible as what my body mass index should be.

Alot of doctors and scientific proof would disagree with your opinion.

People have been able to stop taking their medications, even those on injections all because of this diet.

Others have lowered their bad cholesterol levels while increasing their good cholesterol levels while decreasing the amount of lipids in their blood stream.

Where do you get your info? The Midnight Star Enquirer?
Everything you said is patently UN-TRUE..and yes, has been studied and proven by medical experts. End of your attempted point to be made.

OK - just passing on what I read.

The article even states that nutrionexperts in Denmark call it an insane diet. And they are afraid young teenage girls will start on it - something they most certainly cannot recommend.

But good luck.

Is this a new diet? I don't know, but If so, how can it be studied and proven by medical experts for long-term effects?

TrailorTeddy - I read it in an article.
No need to get aggressive or smart.

It's your body. Just pointing out that not everyone thinks the Atkins diet is fatman's halleluja.

about 25-30 years of case studies are proof of what kind of long term effects you can experience.

case studies done by Atkins himself, among other scientists that had nothing to do with his research at all.

Oh they're just upset cuz we'll stop eating their danishs!

We've got some good old American doctors here that think elsewise and, maybe you've heard of this quaint little publication called the "New England School of Medicine" that just publised a detailed report about how well the Atkins diet works?

I think I'll take that over a Danish any day.

Sorry if you found my post "aggressive or smart".

But when someone just posts "it's bad for you" with nothing to back it up, I just can't accpet that.
