McDonalds is in fact the largest land owner in the world. And... AND the restaurants themselves are run and managed by more teenagers than any other corporation in the world.

They are run by teenagers and they continue to grow. Why? Becasue they have a bad ass business model. Laugh at them but in the end, their business model is one of the best.

If you franchise don't fuck with their model, if you try to cut corners you will fail.

EB what kind of fast food?

I think the fastest growing / most popular new franchise out here is Chipotle... I'm so addicted to that stuff sometimes. Probably eat at Chip' 3-5 times a week.

www.chipotle.com

Maybe you can get some ideas there if you aren't 100% sure of what type of food you want to serve. Mexican food (especially the way they do it) can be quick and easy... and is very popular on the west coast right now. Not sure about out there.

Hmm although... I've heard the biggest Chipotle (receipts) in the Sacramento are does a little over $100,000 a month. Not sure if that's gross or net.

That doesn't seem like a lot? Or does it?

Please move to my city and start a Krystals so I can spend insane amounts of money there. I'm just going to die if someone doesn't open one here soon. The only 24 hour food we have here is Waffle House and IHOP and that gets old FAST. *sigh*

My parents had an ice cream stand/fast food business for about 12 years or so.

Ice cream is seasonal, only has about 3.5 good months a year. Unless you live in a warm climate.

Fast food biz can be a major loss. You have to compete with all the big franchises to begin with, then you have to pay for employees, supplies, utilities, rent/mortgage, taxes (sales tax especially), insurance, advertising etc.

At first, it's misleading because everyone flocks to a new place, to check it out. Then it slowly trickles down and you are left with business expenses and not enough business to cover it.

Fast food business is TOUGH, even McDonalds is having problems.

"The company reported its first quarterly loss in its history in the last three months of 2002 and is in the midst of a shake-up under chief executive James Cantalupo, who took over in January. He says putting the company back on track will take at least until 2005.

It has cut capital spending, closed restaurants, renewed efforts to improve service, and introduced new menu items such as a meal-sized salad and the McGriddle breakfast sandwich"

Though Wall Street seems to think they are on the right track cuz the stock hit a 52 week high recently, sales jumped per store nicely, probably because of the McGriddle and new ad campaign.

Best idea is to come up with your own concept rather than go the franchise route, more risk but way more potential. Or find a regional franchise, like this Chipotle, and buy the rights to a new territory. Need major bucks to do that and you'll find most won't be interested but it only takes one. There are lots of people who became VERY rich this way.

as far as non franchise i don't know, but there are some more obscure corporate franchises that are great. two years ago i helped my friend open her own steak shop. it was a smaller chain which was good because it was unique and not everywhere already. they had alot of classes before the open date and even sent down corporate crew trainers for the first few weeks of operation to train everyone. it helps differ some of the overhead and it also gives you a mold to start from.

Here's some info

If that's not what you're looking for, just play around with Google.

As far as restaurants that are already in biz, Chik-Fil-A has an awesome program, but you have to pass pretty rigorous background checks and have strong religious affiliations - I'm not sure any of us would pass.

We have Chick-fil-a here. And it kinda irks me...great fast food chicken...bomb-ass lemonade...but not open on Sundays. Because the owner believes that Sunday is a day of rest....BOO!
No Chick-fil-a on Sundays...wtf?

btw...has anyone seen a photo of this guy who owns Chick-fil-a? They have one in the window at the one in my town. Looks like a total pedo-pervy mofo. Weird.

EscortBiz,

I tried to open up a hero (wedge) business a few year back. I still own the records for "The Great American Hero," but it was found too generic by the court to be trademarked. Beside the recipe for the sandwich (which is better than Blimpies or subway), the whole idea was to have a colorful superhero cartoon character promote the double meaning.
Spent a lot of money on legal and designing aspects. I was close, REAL close.
Then I found porn.
I am still open for ideas and relections. If you want brainstorm, write me and I'll give you my number. I am in Miami, but have all my family up in Yonkers.
Good Luck!

Truett Cathy is one of the nicest, most generous people on the planet. He lives in the same house he's always lived in - never "moved up, donates millions of dollars a year to charities, offers scholarships to his employees, pays more wages than any other FF restaurant, etc. There have been stories of his managers DRIVING to a customer's home to deliver food if they got the wrong order - their customer service is 2nd to none.

He's one of the few people that actually practices what he preaches. When he started, it was The Dwarf House down past the Atlanta Airport. He told his employees that they would always have every Sunday off to spend time with their friends and family. He loses millions of dollars of year to keep that promise, and IMHO, that's pretty amazing!

We sold him my grandfather's farm and he's turned it into a home and camp for problem kids.

Yeah, he looks like a goof ball but he really is a neat guy and has done an amazing amount of good for whatever community he opens a store in. I have to drive 60 miles each way to get a chicken sandwich and lemonade and I've been known to drive there just to get one.

mcdonalds is #1 at cutting corners
their food has become trash like burger king
we had 4 that did very well til about 2years ago
2 closed, and 1 opened in a chevron station
when their "promotion" to sell doublecheese burgers for $.99 lasts 6months and counting, the end is near
competition is a bitch

Look not going to do a franchise, I start my own shit and if it works within a year I can have as many locations as I want.

It will be spicy food small 10 thing menu, good fresh stuff (no burgers)

Falafal, Spicy wings (not the skinny ones the buffalo) kosher style salami and patato knish etc.

Ill try one if it works ill open more if it fails at least I tried.

I just wondered if there are any books that talk about laws etc. and whats needed to start a food related store.

If you are in the NYC area and have experience in fast foos (other then eating fast food :-) I would hire you to help me start one.

Thanks guys

the trick to making a franchise work is automation, followed by prodn mgmt, quality assurance, and proper documentation of steps.

u gotta build a tree. document everything on the branches, and have procedures fo each part of the tree

im tired. gnite

Take a look at the business model and do the math - Your lucky if you turn a profit in the first two years. I helped to open a number of different places; Some failed and some did well. It's a lot of work, a lot of hours, and a lot of hassles.

Yeah they do (now), but it sounds like they are only offering them to proven top-dog McDonalds Franchiee's.

I'm pretty sure they started privately & McDonalds bought in to a good thing.

But yeah, there business model for "fast food" is like next to none right now IMO. They manage to successfully bring a modern gourmet feeling to you & give you high quality easy to make food.

They've got a lot of style too. Whoever builds their stores has a good imagination .

I like that places food & business model a lot.

Chik Fil A ROCKS! But I ALWAYS seem to CRAVE it on Sundays. Must be a subconscious thing. Boy, they really do have the best chicken sandwiches and nuggets on the planet. I've eaten at Dwarf House in Atlanta several times. They actually serve steaks there. LOL They're just small sirloins, I think (or maybe ribeye) but it still defeats their eat more chicken ads. Hehe.

McDonalds is really starting to suck ass. I used to love their quarter pounder with cheese but lately EVERY time I get one there are nasty hard BONE SHARDS in my burger. GRRR! I finally gave up and now I almost never eat there anymore. I still eat there for the fries and for their fruit and yougurt parfaits occasionally. And I did get one of their new chicken bacon ranch salads recently. Pretty darned decent for fast food salad.
