People should learn the language of the country they're in and assimilate.

My mother has lived in the USA for almost 40 years and can still barely speak English but somehow she got her citizenship 10 years ago. How the hell do you pass the citizenship test when you can't even read, write or understand the language???

"oh just let the poor old lady pass the test, she seems harmless enough and has more than earned her right to be here".. that's my guess.

Except she has ZERO respect for American culture, only likes America for it's "financial opportunities", still thinks Italy/Sicily is the best country, absolutely ONLY has Italian speaking friends (has never had American friends) and is pretty much a 100% socialist ant-capitalist.

People need to be fluent in the language of the country they live in. ESPECIALLY to pass the citizenship test!!

If I went to any country where the population didn't speak English, I'd be expected to learn. Hell, I'd -want- to learn. That way I could assimilate into their culture more easily.

It seems like that would be the ideal situation, instead of having a segment of the population that self segregates and makes no effort to connect with the people in their host country.

See my post above. Trust me, it doesn't take much to pass the citizenship test as long as you pass the eligibility requirements (live in US for XX years).

Let me be the alternative voice.
If people choose not to learn the language of a country they should not be forced to do so.
I fully agree that they would probably be more happy if they did so and could participate in society more actively but its not to other people to force them.
I am not sure what I lose out on if immigrants do not speak my language.

I have lived on the dutch antilles for over 3 years and choice not to learn the local language . The local language is only spoken by about 300k people and I was still able to communicate with everybody in either dutch, english or spanish. Why break my head over the local language when I had so much other things going on and knowing that my stay is only temporarely?

We welcome people to be safe but we don't need people to cripple the system. If you want to work you need to speak dutch. I have lots of Irish friends who are working here at tech companies and all of them are learning dutch as they would like to stay here. They are far in their twenties.

If you would like to stay here and work and get benefits then you should learn Dutch.

Years ago I went to a swearing in ceremony for new US citizens. It was eye opening - how badly people wanted to come to the US and become citizens. Every last one of them spoke better English them myself.

It seems to me that you are confused between invading a country -act of war- and immigrating -looking for a better life- It is not the same at all. As immigrant, the country that receives you has no depts towards you. You have to make the necessary efforts to adapt yourself to the country. Just for the record, I have lived in Denmark, Germany and Spain. I have learned all the languages of those countries without taking any courses. I am an adult and I am responsible for what I am doing. I do not need to be pampered by the governement.
