i'm going to keep posting in this thread, regardless of the hidden rules dictating what the op thinks is appropriate for how people deal with such events.

fact is, people vent their concerns for situations like this in their own unique ways, not unlike the difference between a funeral and a wake.

last report received on schu was the docs operated again, relieving pressure and said he is doing slightly better.

I'd seen that...I really hope that this turns out for the positive. Such a wild accident to have happen to him, or anybody, is just tragic.

while reports claim he was not skiing fast, he was skiing off the groomed trails, that's risky enough. his 14 year old son was with him.

the truly stunning record he holds is his longevity in the sport, not even including his comeback.
even though he raced in the safest era of f1, nevertheless, he was quite the agressive driver, maybe the most agressive ever even. so for him to race, what, ~15 years with his driving style, wow really.

Doctors Start waking Michael Schumacher from Medically Induced Coma:

The official word from Schumacher's manager, Sabine Kehm, is that Michael's sedation is slowly being reduced in order to begin the waking up process, which she also says may "take a long time." What she means by "long time" we don't know just yet.
A step in the right direction, but a lot of uncertainty still surrounds the winningest driver in F1 history.

Today's news has to be seen as a positive. But yeah, still a long long way to go yet, and much more fighting to be done...

My heart rhythm accelerated a bit when I read this piece of news. I hope he will wake up from the coma.

I had a close friend go though the same thing Schumi is. He fell off a boat crane over 20 feet onto his head. Was in a coma for over a month, although for the first few weeks there were several times in which doctors didn't think he would survive. After he stabilized, doctors began waking him up. While I was in the ICU with his parents I asked one of the neurologists if they had any idea if my friend would ever be his old self again. The docs told me that they had no way of knowing until he fully came out of the coma and were able to fully test his cognitive abilities.

They told me he could wake up a vegetable, or be perfectly normal. No way to tell until the patient fully come to. It's a miracle my friend survived and came out of the coma without any major damage (he's perfectly fine today) but there's no way to know what kind of life Schumi will have after (if) he emerges from his coma.

Such a long road ahead of him, but I still remain positive.

I can understand that. I felt the same way for a long time after the death of Gilles Villeneuve.

Schumacher will probably end up a vegetable, makes me think about the futility of life.

He fulfilled his dream to drive in F1, won 7 championships, retired by age 43, with hot supermodel wife, kids. Now he gets to spend the rest of his life as a drooling sack of flesh and bones.

What's the point?

Same here, I started really getting into F1 as Schumacher was first starting to pressure Senna. After he retired the first time I had a hard time staying with F1, it just wasn't the same. He was one of the few drivers that could take a inferior car and beat guys in better cars. Very few people can drive like he did.

I have about 90% of the races since mid '92 on tape/dvd/hard drive, so you might say I'm a bit of an F1 fan ;) In fact, the second race I ever taped was his maiden win, Spa 1992.

I've never been the hugest fan, (and sorry to MS fans but the "All-Schumi-All-the-Time" early 2000s were easily the most boring period i've seen), but I always respected his greatness. I'll never forget Spain '94 when he finished 2nd even though his car was stuck in 5th gear almost the entire race! Virtually everyone else (except maybe Senna) would have just parked it.

As others have said though, at this point it's all about pulling for him to have a good quality of life going forward.

Agreed. Still hard to believe a recreational accident is what we're discussing not a racing accident.

That race when he drove the Ford stuck in 5th and made 2 pit stops if I'm not mistaken, was the race that pretty much cemented that he was going to be one of the best drivers in F1.

They have done so much safety work on the cars now that any racing accident seems to be walk away or the one freak thing that they couldn't have protected you from and dead.

Yeah, that was one of those rare times when a tiny data sample (1 race) can speak volumes about an athlete's skill. I remember Varsha/Hobbs saying Barcelona was maybe the only track where one could conceivably pull it off, but still...just wow.
