I had a close friend go though the same thing Schumi is. He fell off a boat crane over 20 feet onto his head. Was in a coma for over a month, although for the first few weeks there were several times in which doctors didn't think he would survive. After he stabilized, doctors began waking him up. While I was in the ICU with his parents I asked one of the neurologists if they had any idea if my friend would ever be his old self again. The docs told me that they had no way of knowing until he fully came out of the coma and were able to fully test his cognitive abilities.
They told me he could wake up a vegetable, or be perfectly normal. No way to tell until the patient fully come to. It's a miracle my friend survived and came out of the coma without any major damage (he's perfectly fine today) but there's no way to know what kind of life Schumi will have after (if) he emerges from his coma.
Such a long road ahead of him, but I still remain positive.
