I think you have to define what counts as HD? Is it just "better than regular", or is it literally 1920×1080? And then we're not talking about compression; many cam sites now let you drag the video window pretty much full screen, but if they compress the hell out of it it isn't worth anything. And none of them have control over the camgirls camera and upload speed.

This is the important part, cams.com, streammate and probably others call it 'HD', but the model is only sending out a sub 1Mbps stream of 640x480 into an Adobe Media Server. The quality is better than the 'norm', but it's far from HD.

From a technical side 'true' HD simple isn't going to be realistic for a number of years, 1920x1080 at 7-20Mbps, the average cam model doesn't have an internet connection with that kind of upload bandwidth, the average sub $100 web cam isn't going to produce a nice full resolution imagine, etc.

Our Flux Broadcaster can theoretically do 1080 P HD now.

Professional studios don't use $100 cams ... Many have multiple computers with webcast cams attached to each in the $300 - $600 range, maybe 3 cams on one cam girl. 60% of our cams are from studios the rest from independents that might be using $100 consumer cams -- they cannot broadcast in HD

Don't compare a file or DVD run locally or even streamed to live webcam broadcasts. Apart from videochatting with a real person is not comparable to watching a video the main problem in the quality is in the cam; good quality webcams are not in the class of professional cams used in video production they are made to record not webcast. Actually 99% of cam sites considers 320x240 as normal, and 640x480 as HD, as you said.
The difference it can be seen especially if going fullscreen or enlarge video, but marketing as HD a 640x480 it is quite misleading.
We at tubecamgirl.com do not even care to label HD those streams in 640x480, simply we list together 320x240 and 640x480 ones, actually the 320x240 are becoming rare in most sites anyway.

About 1920x1080 it is possible today, as long as a few things are considered. Especially that 99.99% of live models and studios send the same video to 2 or more sites at same time.
We made some tests with studios with upload bandwidth of 5000bkps+ with HDMI-connected sony cams AND with high end Logitech cams, who capture and sends at 1920x1080. So in most cases the stream (H264 codec of flash 11+ with proper settings) it would be fast enough to be called live. But you could see the difference only if you put that in fullscreen on a 20 inches monitor really. And since while sending such a stream the pc was very busy, the same stream couid not be sent to other sites via splitcam even in 640x480, without make all slower, the 1920x1080 stream especially.
So it is working but not worth as too few final users see the difference, and the model/studio can not profit from split-camming the video to 2+ sites as they always do.

We made some tests at 800x600 and that is more ok, but some logitech cams will capture it slow, making some blurring on movements (does not depend by pc's cpu or bandwidth in upload it seems), so we prefer to keep 640x480 default as that's pretty supported.
In fact every different cam and split-cam and connection situation should have different settings - a setting per model (until she updates or changes anything on her end) to make sure it works... so is that worth to tweak... for model to show a few more pixels to guys who may not even enlarge the video vindow enough?

Problem with HD is the CPU demand and the available bandwidth.

We have tested 720p and could do in theory 1080p. Logitec claims that HD quality but few can transmit the images fast enough to our FMS-3 servers.

Another few years; most cam broadcasts with capture cards and good computers with the necessary available bandwidth will be in HD. Splitcam cant work as you need a dedicated bandwidth stream to transmit the larger image sizes required. 16:9 WS is the format not the old 4:3 also.

Some encoding can benefit of some hardwares then it runs fast; there is one logitech cam which include an hardware H264 encoder at it seems to work with flash 11.x h264 codec; and there are "tricks" to make hardware work on else streams work via some video cards, it depends the codecs installed in windows and its settings, that's a little esoterism however, a cam site can't spend time to teach this to every single model (given some are really lazy to learn anything technical) - so such a real HD will be commercially viable only when it will work "automatically" on the majority of the standard cam girl pc's.

And EVERY girl is split camming which can further degrade quality depending on the splitter utilized.

Yes what I said: we coud made a working test if 1920x1080 stream but the girl wanted to splitcam to mfc + other sites and video was too slow then. In fact if a cam site eats too much traffic from a cam girl, she will "skip it" from her sites list. Some studios keep 13 sites open at same time, this is 13 x 300kbps minimum needed, and CPU dies before of bandwidth anyway as flash encoders are bad at multi-code use.. opening one site ie one site firefox one site chrome it helps as it is 3 independent flash , but not all girls knows or wants.

So a correction: real HD will be an usable technology not when it will work sending video to 1 site, but when it will work sending it in 4 or 5 sites at same time

we have i5 quads 4gb ram and ssd's with 30MBps upload fiber. we tested sony cams with hdmi connection and logitech 910 and 920 cams and every codec know to man with only 4 sites open using super webcam as the split (a couple sites dont seem to like the new version of split cam). with the sony setup pc usage was +90%, the 920's around 90% and the 910's at 86%. Still tinkering but these loads on the PC cant be sustained longterm. so many capture cards available but the good stuff is far too pricey when you buy stuff in quantities of 8.

I do know a guy that has rewritten ALL the broadcaster software and he claims his PC usage in in the 50-60% range with the rewrites.

About the splitter, part of the traffic it could be taken by it, try change splitters for example webcamsplitter, and see if any difference:

Other advises are to use one site with firefox, one with explorer and one with chrome (but after they fix the greenish color bug in next revision), since these are indepednent flash versions and may use the multi cores better this way. Opera and safari share with firefox.
Flash 11.4 latest seems to use multi-core better.. the issue it is if you have 4 or 8 cores then flash uses one only, it will slow down when 25% of pc as 25% is 100% of 1/4 of your cpu i.e. one core filled and dumb encoder don't use the other ones.

PS: We have also an "offline, for appointment only" site, chatgf.com . On this one the girl must not (and can not) have free chat, simply sets her status "online" in a button, and only if someone want to private her, she gets a beep then to accept and open the chat. Guys can see only a recorded video and photos of her... This is also popular to girls as it is not eating any cpu, bandwidth or "model chat brain" while waiting for a private.. girl click "I am online" and forgets the page there until anyone buy a private. This system it was popular in the past esp. europe, and it is available as option in most sites, but members are too much used to free chat with even free nude and play, to rely on "offline" sites only anymore
