Using PayPal for adult sites
Hi,
Can people let me know how reliable and effective PayPal is as a payment solution for adult sites or products? We're based in the UK so the options are slightly limited. For example are the horror stories on paypalsucks justified? Is the PayPal sign-up process a barrier to member signups? Do they really freeze all your money for 6 months if your turnover goes up? We're developing a software product for the adult market that will be closely tied to PayPal, and I'd like to get some confidence we aren't shooting ourselves in the foot. Ta ps First proper post here, proffessional lurker. |

Paypal for business to business rocks. For a paysite I would think not.
Let me explain why they are good for us, we have been with them a year. We have become a "Verified" and "Premium" account with them. It took about three months to prove ourselves with them. As soon as money appears in our account we transfer it to our bank. There are no once a month payouts and no hold backs. They charge 5% for this. They do their utmost to verify that the client holds the credit card he is buying with, if he does not we are told. We are also told the buyers history, as in the number of people he has done business with. Our similar info is also given to the buyer. Most of the other CC processors call us high risk because we are adult, our history is less than 0.25 in refunds, chargeback or fraudulent cards. High risk? They then go to charge 15% and hold back 10% and not all of them will give you that 10%, if they don't want to. Our turn over with PP has grown from $250 in the first month to over 100 times that figure in one year. On this the other steal $2,500+ a month (over and above PPs rates) and they hold back another $2,500. So PayPal is ![]() |

Thanks Charly.
Our application would be taking payments from adult surfers rather than b2b, and you suggest it wouldn't be so good in that case. Would the dangers be the higher level of fraud and chargebacks leading to us being switched off by PayPal?

I've been thinking about using Paypal for an upcoming project. I'm based in Oz so my CC processing options have also been narrowed by that ugly Visa thing. I've read and heard so many contradictory opinions re Paypal that I expect I'll just suck and see. Nevertheless I'm also very interested in hearing about anyone's first-hand experiences with Paypal. Danny if you do you do decide to go with Paypal I suggest you have a backup processor in place just in case. That's my plan anyway

...we use paypal for selling DVDs online (about a month now), as our CC processor won't let us sell 'real' items.
To be honest I fucking hate them, their integration is (relatively) complex, and their help non-existent, but so far so good. But we don't seem to have a problem with chargebacks - as something is actually delivered - so i couldn't say whether this could be a problem. |

Looks like I should at least look into getting a backup processor lined up.
Who can I use in the UK?

I've also looked at using www.netbilling.com with a company in the UK that provides merchant account services : www.ecommerceservicesuk.com
Anybody had any experience with these?

I've had pretty good experience with Verotel, I also use paypal.
Besides being slow as piss responding to emails, they've paid on time every time. I do less then $5-8k month with them though. |

Personally, I'm using ACPay for primary, Globill for secondary, Checks & Phones, and Paypal to pick up the people hooked on them, and/or international rejections/Amex/Discover.
I think it'll work well. |

Something that not all paypal ppl will tell you... Paypal charges $1500 to process adult sites for their "visa and mastercard fees".

The reason I ask is, we have talked to several people at PayPal and none of them have heard about any visa or MC fees. Has anyone got anyone at PayPal to confirm the roomer about the fees? And if so, what was there name and phone number? Hugs, Danielle |

Name someone that has been charged the fees. We asked about the email some received and they said it was not from them.
It seems everyone knows someone that knows someone......... But nobody has been able to give a name and number of someone at PayPal that can verify this. Not trying to start anything. Just am beginning to think it is just a urban legend. Anyone charged, please post a contact. Hugs, Danielle |

I would also suggest that you only use PayPal for B2B if you use them at all. Just do a seach for older posts on this board to get a clearer picture. |

I am using Globill now and they are working pretty well. I need a backup, but I also need some affiliate software so that my affiliates will get paid for sales from both processors.

I use them and I'm very happy. They have a lot of experience in processing, have a reliable system and provide excellent support. I use Paypal as a backup option for those customers who really want it (often people who already use Paypal), or for some reason have problems using Jettis. I wouldn't use PayPal for larger volume, because I have doubts they will keep processing for adult, and reportedly sometimes freeze your account if they get some complaints. I suggest you contact Jettis and look over their offerings. I am sure you will be happy them. Their rates are also very good. Greetings, Art |

I don't like paypal. I'm living in paypal blocked area & I can't sign up for paypal account. That causes, that I can't use many services I want to use. Wouldn't it be better to implement epassporte as a payment metod in your sites, because it doesen't block any countries & their services are cheaper than paypal? It also makes market bigger, because anyone(no matter he lives in russia, czech republic, india, china...) can get online visa debet card, which can be used to pay to most of the big CC processor. Account on epassporte can be filled by my creditcard(which is not accepted by any of big CC procs), and then I can buy membership anywhere. Looks like much better than paypal for me.
