I understand that social issues effect students and schools, but a teacher taking a position on this issue is sending the wrong message. The teacher is showing the kids that people are no longer innocent until proven guilty, which is the direct opposite of their job. I think this poor kid was murdered, but that doesn't mean we can assume the shooter was guilty. That's what a court of law is for.

Social Security Death Benefit is a ONE TIME payment. Not for ever and is about $250-350 depending on the persons age and money they paid into Social Security. Had he been a father, his children would get Social Security until 18, but no mother or father gets a lifetime payment for a dead son.

It sounds like the superintendent is saying she was not fired for organizing a fundraiser, but for spending class time engaging in activism rather than teaching. If she had been sleeping through classes she could have been fired.

As an English and journalism teacher, she had the kids writing about the murder of Trayvon Martin, who called himself "No Limit Nigga" and apparently that was okay - English class is for writing. Apparently it was when her classes stopped having anything to do with the subject she was supposed to be teaching that there was an issue.

I agree, that happens a lot and it's activism. When I was young, we were taught about how by the year 2000 the world would be destroyed by global warming, that California would be underwater. It's 2012, California is still there, and China FAR outranks us in reading, math, and science. We owe them trillions because we've become stupid compared to most developed nations, spending our time indoctrinating kids instead of educating them. At the private school I visited, kids were four to six years ahead of public school - on par with kids in China and North Korea.

that has nothing to do with the contract wtf are you saying. that's employment law there better be a clause in the contract that say fundraising has to be cleared with the principal or the education superintendent. if not it will seem its more of a personal decision.

I use the wrong term. There is a one time death benefit of $255. However, there is survivor benefit.

My father died in 1969 in Vietnam when I was nine months old. My mother collected SSN for both her husband having died, and also on my behalf because my father died. My mother collected until she re-married, and collected for me until I turned 18.

I just pulled out my last statement from SSN, and if my child dies I collect $1533 a month. My wife would get the same.
