I think I'm getting carpel tunnel... mouse suggetions?
My right hand is starting to bother me more and more. I broke it when I was younger, about 10 or so years ago I punched a wall (stupid). Not sure if its carpel tunnel or not but at the end of the day, my hand aches!
I heard this thing is pretty good, but anyone use it? ![]()

for me the solution was moving to a larger mouse, remarkably. many people use very small mice that actually make you clench your hand all day, which makes it hurt. have a look a the microsoft wireless desktop mice not the mobile ones to get an idea of a larger mouse and what it can do for you. i actually find the added weight to be helpful.

If you can't use trackball, which I'm sure many of us here would refuse to try anyway, give a bigger mouse a shot and also crank up the speed on it. I find myself barely moving the mouse at all even across 2 big screens and less movement means less chance at injury. I also use a support pad for my wrist. If i don't use it i get pains all up my arm even after a few days so I'm sure that is a big help as well.

I've used these for years and never had any issues with carpel tunnel. Your wrist sits pretty neutral when using it. No extra fancy buttons or scroll wheels but I've never had a need for anything but the classic 2 buttons. It's also awesome for gaming when playing FPS due to the aiming control you get with it.

Stop having bitchinitis, IMO.
But seriously, do you get numbness in your fingers? That's usually carpal tunnel. You can also check for a ganglion cyst. Can cause similar symptoms and pain.

I have some ugly old mouse that came with my Gateway I got like a decade ago.
For some reason, it fits my hand the best, so I stick with it. I had one of those small logitec mouses for my laptop, but yeah they start to hurt.

It's not your mouse, its your keyboard. Check out my old setup:
![]() That keyboard is an 80's style "Clicky" keyboard by IBM, and I *LOVE* it. Besides letting me type VERY fast (160 wpm easy) the "travel" of the keys and the solid click at the end of the travel does wonders for my fingers, hands and wrists. In my new setup ![]() I replaced my old PC's with new Macs, but just under the table I kept my IBM Keyboard. It works perfectly with my macs, and it lets me type very quickly. You can find these keyboards on ebay for about $10 to $50. If you don't want to switch keyboards, grab a Tennis ball and squeeze it for about 5 minutes every couple of hours. (Booble use to have these perfectly squeezable Boobies that worked well too). Basicly, any kind of excursive you can do with your hands will help. Good luck!

I've had trouble like that for years. I thought it was Carpal but turned out to be RSI. I did a course of physiotherapy which helped a lot.
Anyway, I use this mouse: http://www.keytools.co.uk/airobic-mo...ill-mouse.html I have a mouse like the one you showed but I find the DPI too low - I have to move it too much. The best thing I found was to use 2 mice. One hand for movement, the other for the clicks. It seems the combination of movement and clicks on one hand causes the trouble. |

That looks interesting. Thanks for posting. I have the exact same mouse as bossku69, which is a decent mouse, as far as how it sits in my hand, compared to other current ones. But I prefer a bigger mouse. Every few years, I like to switch from a mouse to a trackball and then back, just to break up the repetitive action. I am also a fan of old low tech keyboards like ********** 'cause I like to pound my keys and that does not feel good without enough travel.

Do this, I had right hand issues years ago and just learned to use my left and only use my right when I need to be precise with work.

A large thumb trackball like this worked well for me:
http://www.google.com/m/products/det...21536814977356 It took a few days to get used to. I need to get another one because my last one eventually died and I'm in pain right now from the mouse I've been using the last few weeks.

Get a vertical mouse from http://www.evoluent.com/
It will take 1-2 weeks to get used to and your hand will ache a bit at first as your muscles adjust but after that your symptoms should fade quickly. This cured what seemed like chronic RSI for me in a matter of about 4 weeks. That was 5 years ago and I've never had a problem since. You can buy direct from them or from Amazon. ![]() Good luck! AJ

I've had carpal tunnel for at least 4 or 5 years and I simply live with it. I make sure to take little breaks periodically and also crack my wrists a lot, but FWIW it hasn't progressed any further in years, and I've used computer pretty much 10+ hours a day almost every day for 10+ years.
That said, I've mostly used laptop for the past few years and I think using touch pad spares my right wrist at least vs. using a regular mouse. It would take a lot to get accustomed to a trackball.

Totally unrelated, but I love my inversion table. I invert when I take breaks to release the tension from sitting at a desk. If you aren't familiar with them, google inversion therapy.

There is no medical benefit to wearing a magnet at all. It's not even a debate. There's no evidence whatsoever it does anything. I hav this mouse too, very parctical with bluetooth for all my travelling. But I'm starting to feel a bit in the section between the thumb and the indexfinger as well as having my pinky and ringfinger hanging out on the right side, as bossku described and there is a bit of pain a few days per week. Might be time to get rid of this mouse!

Yes I would agree that it is the keyboard. I use a keyboard from Kenesis:

I've had both my Carpal Tunnels "done" years ago. Left and Right wrists.
The most common symptom is numbness in the fingers (not thumb) nor in the little finger. There is pain sometimes, but mainly numbness of the fingers. Surgery is the only cure for it. As for RSI, which I used to get, I use a very basic Logitech corded mouse when I work. I've tried all the whizzbang mouses, but the little Logitech works best for me. I also keep my wrist flat on the desktop when using the mouse. It's just a matter of training your wrist to lay flat. No mousepad or anything fancy. This way I can work 12 to 16 hours without wrist pain. ![]() |
