Apple or not Apple?

I am one click away to purchase my first Mac, after years of PC, Dell, Sony i am hesitant to click that button.

I am going for the iMac 27-inch: 3.1GHz....now you tell me why i should click that button.

And...can i connect and additional screen to the Mac?

You're throwing money away. The hardware is overpriced and no better than a quality PC.

Buy Apple stock to make money but buy a PC to use for work.

If you want osx, buy a mac. If you don't, don't.

That's all there is on the matter really.

But I'm sure that won't stop the loonies arguing for 5 pages about it.

I don't like all in one products. I like piecing out my systems so that they meet my needs, not overall needs while getting socked extra money for it.

They do make sexy products though, no doubt.

People complain about needing to replace PCs often. Right now I'm running on a four year model and a two and a half year model. Both still running fine, I notice some lagging issues with the four year model but not a big deal. And honestly, I don't mind buying a computer every two years anyway. I figure it's part of the trade.

I had the opposite experience. I had to keep running back to my windows machine to get things done. Once Windows 7 came out I stopped trying to like Mac. It just wasn't working out.

I'm also a week away from my imac27" i7/16gb ram/2tb+ssd/2GB graphics system.

Plus you can run windows on it if you have too. Mostly I need it for my ipad/iphone apps developement and 3D renders (cinema4d) for local council animation projects. Animation is so slow on a P4 (PC).

You were trying to do animation on a P4?

My macbook display went too on my back up machine. Logic card. 4 years old. I took it into the store, they swopped it out for new screen in two hours. Cost = nothing.

But I knew about the class action suit I mentioned to you, and as soon as I said that, they fixed it free with a smile.

do you have a link for me? i found one about Nvidia bugs, they said they fixed that but on the screen there's an additional failure that has nothing to do with it

So basically what you're saying is...is that you spent a shitload of money on a tablet(I like them) only to find out that you actually wanted a laptop so you spent even more.

Somebody DID give us an ipod and we knew better than to use it.
Largely because Apple still thinks it's theirs after you buy it. They
think it's up to them to decide what content is appropriate for you
to see on "their" device, you have to use their software, etc.
Taking the ipod as a simple example of their mindset, with any other
mp3 player, you just plug it and drag and drop. They show up
as a Flash drive, because that's what, they are. With Apple, you
Have to use itunes and now they are making it so itunes
deletes all of your mp3s that you got elsewhere. What the hell
makes them think they have the right to delete my files!?

On the other hand, the OS is designed for more than just
light home use. Windows still shows it's heritage as having been
designed as the most stripped down useless OS ever.
Stripping everything related to security, for example, made sense
when they designed it to run in 1980s homes, running from
floppy disk with no network. That base had come back to haunt
Microsoft and their customers ever since.

Twelve years ago I learned how to get an enterprise class OS on
standard hardware, without some giant company that thinks
they are in charge of my computer. I've bern, living Linux every since.
Linux does a great job for me on my desktop, my laptop, my
DVR, my servers, my router, and even this smart phone I'm
using to write this reply.

Go for it!

I was a PC person forever until a couple of years ago when I bought my first mac (A laptop). I then purchased an iMac27 for my computer at home and fell in love. It's fast, sleek, quiet, and works with everything I throw at it. There is nothing that the iMac does (and does much better and faster) than the PC does not.

It never crashes. It's never infected with viruses or trojans. It's not loaded down with useless software. It has only 1 wire coming out of the back. The screen is the sexiest clearest, brightest screen possible. Oh, and tech support is the best I have EVER experienced.

I like the iMac27 so much that I replaced our accounting computer with one, my office PC with one, and now my video editor / blogger person is using an iMac27 as well.

Trust me - you will LOVE this machine. If you're going to compare machines, don't go by only CPU, RAM, GPU or Screen size. There are a dozen other things to compare, and the iMac blows PC's away.

If you're not convinced, go to an Apple store and play with an iMac27. The store near me let me try it for 3 whole hours. The sales person was around to answer my questions and then buggered off when I wanted to be left alone. Cool.

Enjoy your new Mac!

I don't want to get sucked into their silly little cult.

Steve Jobs is definitely a marketing genius, to get so many people to pay more for a machine that is usually slower and non-upgradable. As long as they're happy with their cute little white desk ornament, more power to them I guess.

OS X is the main reason I use a Mac. The build quality, support, brilliant design and high resale value of a machine when I want to upgrade is just a bonus.

I bought my first Mac about a year and a half ago (MacBook Pro). Although my primary machines are all PC's, I highly doubt I will buy another PC when it's time to upgrade. Things just work better and easier with a Mac. : 2 cents:

I bought a MacBook Pro years ago to replace a Sony laptop. I love it, however I do a lot in Excel and some other programs that are a bit more troublesome in Mac then on a PC. Still, if I had to replace my laptop, I would buy a Mac hands down

And...can i connect and additional screen to the Mac?
Do it because you can and there is no better way to form your own opinion about the mac vs PC debate than to experience it for yourself.

You can connect another monitor to the imac via a $29 cable.

I've never used Excel to anywhere near it's potential so I just switched to Numbers and it does everything I need and more.

I'm strongly considering dumping my desktop altogether and picking up the new Apple 27" monitor, a Drobo enclosure, and a Henge Dock.

I had a mac but I still had to run windows to do a lot of the stuff that I do. I didnt see the point in having a mac if I still needed windows, so I dumped the mac on ebay and got most of my money back on it.

I built an awesome Core-i7 PC a year ago running Win7 Ultimate 64bit and have been very satisfied with it.

No one wants that product Rochard. Variations have been on the market for around 10 years. There are a few problems, primarily windows was not designed to be used via touch. Hence it is a disgusting, clunky, ugly experience compared with Android or iOS. Another problem is the size and weight. The actual tablet is HUGE! And when docked as a laptop it is also very large. The weight compared to a modern android system or ipad2 would be laughable.

The idea of combining a tablet and laptop is a very bad idea, especially if it is running an OS not written with touch in mind. It's a kludge of device brought out as a reaction to the rapidly growing tablet market. And it won't be on sale very long I imagine.

Hope that helps

I have been a Mac user for over 2 years now and I'm very happy. The operating system is much faster and efficient than any Windows operating systems. One major selling point for me is the screen resolution. After using a Mac for editing it's a night and day difference with screen resolution quality, the screen quality of a pc looks like a cellphone screen with lines and patterns in it.

My Mac also never ever get's viruses

Get whatever the fuck you want? None of us are Apple salesmen, so we don't really care if you click the button.

If you don't want an apple, don't get one. If you do want an apple, get one. I have a kickass PC and Mac, and I like them both. So I recommend you to get both. I use my mac 99% of the time because it's amazing.

Don't blame old hardware.
I starting doing 3d on the Amiga500 (6Mhz) back in the days. Would take 24 hours to do 1 image at 800x600 res. On a P4 it takes about 2 seconds. And it's slow - considering there is 1000's of frames in each animation and of course the objects are building now not balls on a floor.

I have a huge HP touchscreen running Win7 and I've never had any problems with it. It works fine with windows.

As for my little Duo here, it's perfect for me. It's smaller than the laptop it replaces, has a keyboard, and works as tablet for when I'm surfing.
