One government for the whole world. One that is set up in such a way as to end or at least drastically reduce the need for wars of any type. Do you think it's doable? Possible within say, 50 years? 100? Never?

Before you say it'll never happen, remember all of you who just a few short years ago said the US will NEVER have a black president. "It'll never happen", I even recall a few specific names who posted those very words. Be careful of what you attribute that phrase to because more often than not the thing you think is impossible *will* happen or be achieved in some form sooner than you think.

Anyway, I'm not talking Hitler's vision or that of any past wouldbe world conqueror. I'm talking more the idea you see on movies like Starship Troopers or shows the likes of Star Trek -- Earth has it's "Federation", Vulcan has one overall race called 'Vulcans', the Klingons are the Klingons etc... and pretty much every new world encountered is run by one main race with one overall governing body. The humans and their 'Federation' in these shows paint quite an attractive future for us.

My only issue is the question of - are we as a race smart enough to attain it or even anything close to it without wiping ourselves out of existance first?

The reason why that isn't feasible is because we consider ourselves alone in the universe (the bible tells us so), so we have to divide amongst ourselves. If, all of a sudden, we learned there were 12 other civilizations out there besides us, it would be much more likely that all the humans would unite with each other.

Until then, we get to listen to blowhards on all sides bicker and scream falsehoods about the other side.

It is an interesting concept.

When you look at how the worldwide economic crises is being handled today, with all large nations consulting with each other about the actions to take to stabilize things and the summits that are held regularly by the big interests, it seems that we are moving in that direction anyway as nations are more interdependent on each other than many have realized.

I do hear debate on the benefit of one worldwide government, and I do not know enough about the idea to say if it is a good thing or not.

There is an almost zero chance of it happening. There are just too many opposing views on this planet. Will the muslims happily live under a christian leadership? No. Will the christians live under a muslim leadership? No. There are just too many religions and too many language barriers for it to happen any time soon.

The only way I could see it happening is if there was some kind of world wide catastrophic event that required the world to come together in order to survive it, but even then I think we would work together and then go back to living our separate lives.

I can not imagine anything more horrible than a one world government. Fortunately anyone who studies history and understands human nature realizes that it will not happen. As a matter of fact at the current time we are witnessing many nations fragmenting into smaller states (USSR, Yugoslavia, Caucasus, Iraq). That is likely the the future trend as the same technology which enables totalitarian big government also enables organized dissent and revolution (see Ukraine, Iran, the Mujaheddin, Al Qaeda etc.)

Anyway I am hoping the trend continues and big government monstrosities like the EU implode from the weight of their own corruption, waste and inertia like the USSR.

Someone once said that whatever man can imagine...given enough time...man can accomplish and I suspect there is great truth in this statement...so I do think that most...if not all things are possible.

But I personally do not think that one world government will happen...not now...not ever...because I do not think the human animal will be around long enough to accomplish this. I personally think that on the scale of the earth's history of life the human animal will be one of early extinction. Man has been out of the caves for 30,000 years and I personally do not think that man will make 100,000 years let alone millions of years.
