I am cutting out the carbs

No bread, no pasta, no rice... what else is important to stop?

Where are the diet and health guys? Do I have to stop drinking beer too?

I'm going to eat meat, fruit, vegetables and shed some pounds.

What's the point? You'll be eating them again in two months. Do something that's more sustainable.

I don't get why people even bother doing that shit. Bread is fucking bread.

People who want to lose weight should exercise. Not stop eating basic everyday food...

studies show that a diet with fiber in it makes you live longer. low carb shortens life spans and increases colon cancer risk.

Try small changes that you can sustain. Try eating 5 times per day (not chocolate bars and chips) or cutting out all liquid sugars like pop and juice.

lol yes beer is all carbs. unless u drink low carb shit beer. that's why they call it a beer gut. whenever i do atkins i just drink straight liquor (usually scotch) - no carbs. also look at the carb count of things like fruits and comdiments. some of them are loaded. basically just eat tons of meat, some cheese, oh-- and whipped cream is zero carb

for the haters that spend 3 hours a day in the gym - some of us are too busy or too lazy to hit the gym. i definitely dont have time for the gym even tho i am a member of a 5-star private gym a few blocks from my house. 12 hours a day on the computer + a wife and baby + drinking time. you do the math.

atkins/low-carb is definitely not a good life choice, but it is a great crash diet. i always try to watch what i eat, but there are times - like after the holidays or after a huge development cycle - that i have to do Atkins and drop 10 lbs.

fyi i just signed up for vodmoney.com - looks good. going to use it for ipads..

people often confuse low carb diets for high fat meat eaters, which is where you're going wrong. the majority of your carbs are supposed to come from vegetables like broccoli, asparagus, spinach, lettuce, greens, etc...

an easier way to approach it instead of a stricter Atkins type could be the slow carb way. a few simple rules here:

I loves me some carbs, but I'm turning into a fat fuck like you people. I've decided to cut all soft drinks from my life for a while (I love coca-cola!) and will stick to water only, and of course, my beer. My lovely, lovely beer.

Carbs are your friend. Without them, you have no fuel. You have to exercise to burn them off, along with the fat.

Cutting out carbs is difficult, and you'll feel like shit. That diet fad is a bunch of bullshit. I've gotten ripped without paying attention to how many carbs are going into my body. My diet was good overall, but there was no hardcore monitoring of carb intake.

The biggest thing to eliminate is refined sugar. That includes the biggest offender, which is a can of soda.

The sugars you get from fruit are good for you.

Also, drink plenty of water and increase your fiber intake. I make a green drink every day, mixed with Citrucel fiber drink powder.

this.

no one macronutrient is the culprit. consuming more energy (calories) than you expend is the issue. eat less than required and lose weight. simple.

Too much alcohol can be damaging. One glass of red wine can be good for the heart. Carbohydrates can give you more energy, even on a short term basis (ex. get energy 5 minutes after drinking juice). To lose fat, you must lower your calorie intake every day. Eating meat, fruit and vegetables is a good idea. Eat food based on your body weight. You could lose fat by eating 1500 calories/day. Congratulations on good looking abs, dyna mo.

this really is the key, at least it is for me. i've discovered a direct correlation b/w carbs and amount of activity. there's a fuck load we don't know about carbs, but i do know i FEEL a lot better when i get to eat carbs. and they are just plain fun to eat. like fat. fun fun fun.

even gluten. i went 9 months, no shit gluten-free, not once gluten, getting all my carbs from non gluten sources. then started eating gluten (pancakes, marie callendar chicken pot pies, etc), no change in how i felt. that's not to say others don't have an allergy to gluten or whatever it may be that causes issues with it.

Some great advice in here, thanks.
I do work-out a couple times a week, but probably nowhere near as hard as I ought to, so I'm going to bump that up.

Sugar is a big one for me. Love it in my coffee. I drink more beer in the summer, probably around 12 to 20 of them per week. I don't think that's a lot. But I gotta drop what makes me feel bloated. ie.. fried food, fast food... basically junk. I need to up my fruit and vegetable intake in a big way.

Having some sugar in your coffee is no big deal, as long as you don't have 3 cups per day. The idea is to not be consuming sugar all day.

Actually screwing up your diet a little here and there is essential to succeeding. You'll go crazy if you go too long without something you crave, then binge.

A diet and exercise lifestyle is easy if you keep it simple and go all natural, but eliminating all carbs and consuming only meat will just get you a good case of gout. Trust me, when you wake up one morning with what feels like 2 broken big toes you'll go all natural.

What most people don't know is the Atkins diet craze was actually stolen from another doctor who was doing research on depression and one of the side effects of a high protein diet was you lost weight.- That's it.

All natural balances things out and you will soon notice your total food intake drops. The many spices you'll put in your food to add variety are also the leading cancer fighters, plus it doesn't take long before you look and feel healthier.

IMO the reason why most webmaster look like fat slobs is because they can't find a balance due to the amount of mental energy we use comparatively. By fault we use a huge amount of glucose to stimulate mental activity to do our jobs and then consume anything in hope to balance the physical or mental comedown void.

This is coming from a guy that was a heavy drinker, smoker, 75lbs overweight, totally broke and almost $300k in the hole. Six years later I only eat natural foods, don't smoke or drink, lost 72 lbs, and outright own most of my assets plus my online business income can easily ride into retirement.

What's the point of this fucking Eulogy?- Simply changing to a healthier lifestyle will cause a positive domino effect to a better life.- That's a fact.
Inspiring post, thanks.
I'm going to play it right and research a diet that fits for me.

The main thing it's much easier to stay away from bad food when your blood suger is on a stable level.

I just mentioned something along these lines in another thread, but I'm 100% certain that the best and most SUSTAINABLE way to lose weight and gain muscle tone is to combine 20+ minutes of high intensity interval training (ie, jumping rope) with a high fiber diet and resistance exercises like pushups/pullups. Try to shoot for 25-30 grams of soluble fiber per day.
I emphasize SUSTAINABLE because, yeah, it's certainly possible to get in great shape by going on some hardcore diet and doing a complex exercise regimen for a few months, but that will usually lead to burn out unless you've been doing it for so long and don't know any different.
Just shoot for 30 grams of soluble fiber and 20 minutes of HIIT every day and everything else will fall into place. The HIIT speeds your metabolism and fiber is filling, which means it's likely that you will not WANT to overeat while your body is simultaneously burning calories at a rate much greater than usual. The exercise also improves your focus and, from a psychological standpoint, it's much easier to be on a 'diet' where the goal is to eat more of something rather than to eat less of something.

Neither are good for you, but ask your doctor, if he was to choose one -- diet coke or regular coke -- which one is worse?

You may be surprised at what he tells you ....

i'm interested in more about this. 30g of fiber isn't necc. that much but it is more than the ave american gets. but it's my understanding weight loss is very simple- consume less energy (calories) than you expend. for people who are ~>15% bodyfat the best way to do that is to cut cals, exercise is secondary if weight loss is the only goal.
<15% will require exercise of some sort to help with the final stubborn fat pounds.

completely absolutely bad information.

there's nothing wrong with whole fruit. in fact, the new weight watchers program does not even list any fruit in the carbs category, it doesn't even list it in food, fruit is a free item.

fruit gets a bad rap when it should not.

Are you joking? Fruit is a huge source of carbs.

not joking in the slightest. fact is, fruit needs to be looked at differently, as weight watchers, for instance, has realized. fruit is not a bad carb.

There are so many beneficial qualities of fruit that completely override the natural carbs you'll get from them. There are usually plenty of empty carbs that can be removed from your diet way before fruit.

OK.. I didn't read everyone else's replies, but cutting out carbs Atkins way is a great way to drop 10 pounds quickly. It shocks your ody. It is unhealthly to try to live without carbs because it is too hard on your liver & kidneys.

Even the Atkins diet only has carbs severly restricted for two weeks, then you add them back in. If you try it, you might realize you were eating a crazy amount of carbs that you probably weren't burning off.

You can maintain the weight loss if you continue to exercise (cardio + weights) and eat well.

If you want a good starting point to start working out & eating right, I suggest Bill Phillips Body for Life plan. It's how I got in shape. (& Chris knew me before I got in shape! :o)

That's okay since it is naturally occuring sugar in its natural form. you get "value added" nutrients and vitamins in that form.

REFINED SUGAR, on the other hand, is a POISON

Anyone that thinks fruit is a detriment to their diet needs a new source of information.

I'm on a super low sugar (I only take sugar in its natural form--ie., in fruit, veg, etc), high protein, high value carb vegetarian diet. I've lost 50 pounds already and I feel great.

Let me repeat--REFINED sugar = POISON. I can't reiterate that enough.

true... fruit is good for you for many reasons, however we do not need to eat it every day. Once a week is more than enough to get your antioxidants, antiinflamatories and vitamins in. Especially if you are trying to lose weight. You sabotage yourself from burning calories if your insulin levels are spiked daily with fruits.

You can just eat vegetables and you will get all the same benefits without the high levels of fructose.

The 30g is based on a 2000-2500 calorie per day diet.

It's also not necessarily the fiber in and of itself that does the trick. It's the fact that fiber tends to be in healthier foods that fill you up.
