For all the people that really believe domain names are an investment

www.pr0n.com.

It's undeveloped.

www.porn.com

it's parked.

www.sex.com

it's parked.

"Prime real estate" ? Bullcrap.

Let me tell you one of my favorite jokes :

Isidor and Isaac are good friends. One day Isaac passes a garage sale and buys a painting for 20 bucks.

Isidor comes to visit the same day, sees the painting, and goes, hey Isaac, that's an ugly painting you got there, sell it to me for 30$.

Done deal. Next week, Isaac comes visiting Isidor, sees the painting and goes, Isidor, I'll pay you 50 bux for that useless piece of junk over there.

Back and forth, by the end of the year the painting's market value is in the five digits. The maid accidentally drenches it in windex and ruins it. Isidor to Isaac

"What a clumsy maid you have, she;s ruined such good business for us".

They're useless folks. Wake up.

Good analogy.

I hear the domainers talk about this shit all the time. I makes me chuckle on the waiting game to cash out, but to each their own. We all have our limits on how soon we want investments to pay off.

Franky for me, I just get creative and brand a domain of my choosing. I am not paying $XX,XXX for some domain. But then again, I am not a corporation with millions to burn. A lot of ad campaigns, movies, major corporations "may" be willing to burn money on such ventures, and then the domainers may make their big pay day.

We all manage to capitalize. So be it.

Here's the deal with big corporations tho. First, a true story friend just shared :

Back when DEC was hot shit (first corporation connected to the Internets, 85 it was, or 84), and their Altavista engine had a bigger market share than google has today, they didn't bother registering altavista as a domain, and somebody else did, hoping to sell it to DEC and make bank.

DEC went to court and got a court order prohibiting the intreprid fellows from ever running a search engine off that domain.

Five schmucks in ill-fitting suits don't get to fleece big corporations. That's the rule of the game, the better suit does the fleecing. So, if them "big corporations" ever want the domainer's domains, they'll just pass a law saying so. It's happened a while back, about actual corporate domains and trademarks. That would have been 90% of the value.

If they'll want more words, they'll just give them to themselves.

just because you have not made money with domains means they are worthless? I have bought some for 100 dollars and sold them for 7K, 5500 and a few others. But yeah I would never spend real money on one.

I agree, domains are worthless, all the people should just give them to me for face value that they paid, and I will help them out and dispose of the domains properly for them.

I am buying all you that want to unload please feel free to contact me .

I'm not saying it doesn't, or can't happen, that you get a few hundred or maybe even a grand or two for a domain name. Anything can happen to individuals, including a meteorite falling on your head (remember the Canada satellite drop ?)

However, statistically, I'm saying more money has been put into buying domains for the purpose of selling them at a profit later than has been received for selling such domains. I'd guess by a factor of 10.

What I understand from your post is "Grapes are sour" ... so, no whining. Domain names are really an investment and the thing you told was not a joke. Really.

If sex.com and porn.com are same to your xyz they would be getting thousands of type-ins daily. Think.

Either that, or you've figured out it's the only claim any surfer can make that can't easily be proven false. It'd be so much more difficult to play the webmaster.

You forgot to mention how worthless money is.
After all it's just paper.

People are so stupid because I can spend $20 with you and you can spend it again and the person you spend it with treats it just like $20!!!
Don't they realized that it lost value when I spent with you since it is now
USED!!!

Yea smartypants, there's a difference between wealth creation and speculation. If at every point when money changes hands, wealth (ie, something desirable) was in fact created, then money keeps (or increases) its value.

If money just merely passes hands, without any wealth being created, money actuyally loses value. It's how inflation is born, and it's why wealth redistribution attempts in the form of money redistribution are bad (as the russians have amply proven with their communinst experiment). This'd also be why theft isn't commonly added to the GDP.

Failure to understand these would, I guess, explain what happened to the US economy past decade.

In other news. The owner of the hotdog stand gave the hooker $20 for a blowjob. The hooker then bought $20 worth of hotdogs from him so he took the $20 and got another blowjob. Since she had the $20 again she got $20 worth of hotdogs again so the guy took the $20 and got another blowjob. This went on for a year and eventually the guy ran out of hotdogs but the hooker got fat and still had the twenty. Just goes to show you that the hooker manages her money better.

The point'd be that domainers don't give anybody neither [satisfactory] blowjobs nor [edible] hot-dogs.

As proven by the fact that the best and greatest domains are STILL UNDEVELOPED.

Actually, Compaq, after buying DEC, bought the altavista.com domain for more than $3m.

See techweb.com/wire/story/TWB19980729S0021 for more info.

The key was that the owner of altavista.com had every right to the name, as he'd registered it before search engines even existed and it was also the name of his company.

And you mention porn.com in your original post, but not porn.org. *sniff*, I'm hurt.

Dan.

Why do you classify these as the "best" and "greatest" if they are of no value?

Yes, but a good chunk of those 3m were in fact costs from the previous litigation, I think. Either way, to quote myself,

However, statistically, I'm saying more money has been put into buying domains for the purpose of selling them at a profit later than has been received for selling such domains. I'd guess by a factor of 10.

Just checked it out. Nice site

It's how an argument is built. According to A, a1 and a2 are the best and greatest. However, according to a larger sample of people, a1 and a2 have no value. Therefore, A's ideas on valuation are useless.

Your point does not factor in the possibility that a dumb-ass bought the domain and that's why it's parked. Rather than it's parked because it is worthless.

It was your statement though. So I'm asking why do YOU consider them the best and greatest? Is it based on their sale price?

As to value. Wouldn't you say a domain has value if it earns income for it's owner even while parked and not developed?

What makes you think a domain is wasted simply because it isn't developed? A lot of people make mad money from simple parked domains. I have a few crappy domains that have made me a fair bit of income off of type-ins alone.

There is no money in domains. There is no money in the Internet. There is no money in porn. I also have people telling me there isn't real money in running a business, its too "risky" they say.

Haters. Oh well, leaves more for the people willing to play The Game.

This'd also be why theft isn't commonly added to the GDP.

Failure to understand these would, I guess, explain what happened to the US economy past decade.
sooooo.. domains = tulip bulbs?

Nice try, but your argument is based on a fallacy. Domains have real value and create real wealth beyond the secondary market. Anyone who is making real money in domains is BUYING domains at premium prices and generating ROI, not trying to accumulate capital gains by flipping them in the secondary market.

There is no doubt that a domain trading industry exists (ie the secondary market), but this is not where the smart money is.

sex.com or adult.com are a bad example, clearly those domains generate type ins and so generate income... so just based on that they are worth something, how much they are worth is debatable though...

a better example would be perhaps iPhoneError.com that some guy earlier in this thread posted, that domain is basically worthless...

I suppose like any market the bubble could burst but its not going to happen any time soon. Will corporations start thinking buying generic terms that describe their product are a waste of money? Possibly but it can also be more effective than buying adwords for such generic terms. Just last month more than 15 million dollars was made selling domains. The domain market is healthy and here to stay for a good while yet.

I have a few websites I like to piss around with that make a nickel here and there. But, I much prefer owning a few domain names.

I'm glad 1000's of people like fluffygrrl exist.
They fund everything I do and everything I own. The maid hasn't shown up yet

Domains are useless just like the house you live in is useless. I appreciate this thread for it's humor.

My dear sir, you are slightly confused. Just last month CLAIMS were made as to 15 million dollars worth of domain sales. In that same month, CLAIMS were made of wild passionate sex last night/weekend behind the bleachers of any highschool in every town. That doesn't make neither the average teenager's sex live healthy, nor this so called "market"

Not that a 100m a year "market" is all that great to begin with.
