Actually, Compaq, after buying DEC, bought the altavista.com domain for more than $3m.

The key was that the owner of altavista.com had every right to the name, as he'd registered it before search engines even existed and it was also the name of his company.
And you mention porn.com in your original post, but not porn.org. *sniff*, I'm hurt.
