Just came back from watching Gravity
Man oh man.
SPOILERS - DON'T READ IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT YET Seriously, you guys (and just about 90% of people, from what I've read) thought this was a great movie? The special effects. Yes, they are well done, I guess, though I'm not a big special effects guy to start with. I'm more interested in a good plot. I have no idea what the fucking plot was. Can a movie be good if it is mostly just monologues? The Sandra Bullock character seemed to have a hell of a lot of bad luck, it was just her surviving one unbelievable disaster after another. When you really think about it, it's just the same old stupid movie. Is this what is supposed to be a "strong female character"? The part about her losing her daughter in kindergarten or some shit... I mean, man, how fucking trite can you get? Pointless really. Okay, it's science fiction, I suppose, so to get into the accuracies and whatnot sounds ridiculous. But some stuff really stands out. I'm not sure, but I would think that after breathing 5 minutes of carbon dioxide you would be dead. Second, you would think NASA would not send such a hysterical bitch on a space mission, due to her delicate mental state. Oh, and the fire extinguisher part, laughable. And Russia firing missiles to destroy their own satellite? Does that sounds even remotely possible? Blame it all on the Russians LOL. The whole time I was expecting something interesting to happen. Halfway through the movie I could tell it was never going to. This was it. I have a whole movie of Sandra Bullock overcoming impossible situations, only to land safely on a beach and look triumphantly up at the sky. Yes, she made it! Is that the "other" story, as some have put it? Never give up, keep on fighting, it's not over until it's over, survival is the ultimate goal, fight for your life until the last breath, overcome adversity, or something? Seriously, isn't that "message" a bit worn out? I mean, we've seen it in hundreds of movies already. Or is it, as I have recently read, "through the adversity, a human reborns" shown in the drowning scene at the end and also the fetus scene. Ugh... even if that is what they were going for, the plot and dialogue do not support these so-called messages. If anything, they take away from them. Boring. Predictable. Unimpressive. Disappointing. Trite... and I forgetting anything? What a piece of crap. I will admit, I feel very alienated when I watch movies these days. It's seems garbage gets passed as art and people eat it up with two hands. I'm just not impressed with any of the shit that most people consider great. So before you bash me for not liking this, I know I am in the minority. Critics are RAVING about this movie, but for the life of me I don't understand why. If you love special effects, if you are a CGI geek, then this movies is perfect for you. |

97% on Rotten tomatoes http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/gravity_2013/ so I guess you're part of the 3% that hated it

It's a dialogue driven movie with 3D effects done right. Predictable? Yup but I wouldn't expect anything less. I hope for more but know I'm not going to get it so I'm never disappointed. I'm part of the 97%.

Dialogue driven? It's mostly Bullock talking to herself, and pretty annoying at that.

I liked how it was just a serious of crazy visually impressive scenes combined with tense slower ones. I enjoyed how there wasn't a bunch of stupid extra plot like romance, extra beginning stuff, extra ending stuff. Started right in the action and ended right after it
This is not a slow tedious 2.5hr drama |

Also china shot missiles to blow up a weather satellite of theirs a few years ago. Some of the other stuff is pretty far fetched though. Did you watch any trailers first? I thought the movie was going to be a bit different before I saw some

Rotten tomatoes is a guide, its a plus minus scale. So even if you thought it was watchable that is a positive score. So when shit bag movies like 42 come out and people feel guilted into enjoying it and ends up with a 80+ rating nobody questions it. Now watch that movie again and you will see an over dramatized bag of shit full of lies, exaggerations with some decent acting from Harrison Ford. They mangled an otherwise great true story. J. Falcon, You're on the money man. Gravity wasn't that great, had little story, the action and effects took higher precedence which makes it watchable, but forgettable at best.

2 - Sandra Bullock essentially had to act our an entire movie - alone. You try pretending to be in nothingness and carry a movie for that amount of time. No fancy subplots or cheap tricks. Just straight up Sandra B. in your face for the entire runtime. If you've ever made a movie, you'd now how hard that can be to pull off. 3 - You probably had higher expectations about the movie than you thought just from the "rave reviews" you saw. 4 - If you didn't like it or don't get it, that's fine. I didn't get Harry Potter, Twilight or Fifty Shades of Gray. We each have different tastes and opinions when it comes to what we enjoy in a movie.

Thank you, I feel a bit less weird now for not liking this hehe. Exactly, it really means shit that this movie has such high ratings. I've learned not to trust critics opinions a long time ago. As for the general public, they view going to the movies like they do going to a theme park, they just want to be entertained. |

im glad i saw it (in imax 3d on an amazing screen in NYC) because visually its probably the most impressive thing ive seen in a movie theatre. but yeah, the plot was dumb and completely implausible, which is annoying to me.

Warning, SPOILER:
. . . . Gravity works because: - It's probably the most advanced space movie ever. - The sound is just as important as the visuals. - Cuaron's Camerawork Is Riveting Beautiful spectacular visual effects aside, the movie is about Bullocks character overcoming the tragedy in her life. The shit happening to her in space is nothing compared to what happened to her on earth with her daughter. Don't forget that at one point, she gives up. She realizes her situation is hopeless and gives up.... but then..... the door opens, in steps ol' Clooney, and she changes her mind. When that scene occurred I was PISSED OFF because I thought they movie had cheated (open door no air no air pressure Bullock should be dead) but fortunately a few minutes later the "Reveal" occurred, saving me from pitching my coke at the screen. Going home though I wondered if Clooney was ever there at all. Do you ever hear mission control talk to Clooney's character? He was calm cool and collected during the entire movie even when he .... you know. And the scene with the 2 hands trying to reach each other reminded me of the Creation of Adam by Michelangelo. Good his character actually be an angel? I don't think so but it might fit too.. LOVE Gravity.

Lack of plot is a weak argument. Did Full Metal Jacket have a plot? I'll bet you liked that movie. Everyone does. There's all kinds of movies, and sometimes they don't have a plot. Maybe it's a character study, or just about a series of events, with a little symbolism thrown in.
It sounds like you have some kind of conventional criteria which needs to be met --A to B plot, more than two characters, etc. If just showing an odyssey a character experiences is enough to hold the attention of an audience, then what's wrong with that? Trust me, you're not the lone genius who is right about Gravity -- you didn't even pick up on my HEAVY sarcasm in last night's response to your bad taste in movies.

Funny that you mention Full Metal Jacket, it's one of my favorite movies, and not because everyone likes it. Everyone likes Gravity and I don't. And Full Metal Jacket does have a plot. In fact, I would say it has two. |

Astronaut crew headed by Bruce Willis needs to land a shuttle on an asteroid and plant a nuke inside to blow it apart before it strikes Earth. That's a plot. Actually, Gravity does have a plot. Newbie astronaut has to find a way back to Earth. Does it need to be more complex to be considered worthy of a movie?

Not going to go into her losing her child at home, already discussed that in the review. Clooney opening the latch would've pissed you off it had happened because it wasn't believable, but all the other stuff that DID happen that wasn't believable didn't piss you off? Don't understand. Yes, you do hear Clooney talking to Houston. Several times. When he tells his stories and they basically tell him to shut up. |

Not sure about others but the minute people bring up the 3D as being important, I know the movie part is going to suffer. 90 minutes of visual effects won't hold my interest.

Just read a review that made me LOL.
If the movie would have run for 10 minutes longer, Sandra Bullocks character would have probably been attacked by some wild animal inside the jungle. And she would have made a miraculous escape. |

OK - YOU HAVE TO BE IN A HIGH END 3D THEATER to get the brilliance of this film...
Not all 3D theaters are the same - many screens suck and half the shit looks blurry, many glasses suck too. Also you have to sit up middle to high in the center. And with the right 3D screen this movie is an incredible experience (if you watched it online your opinion doesnt matter one bit) Why cry about lack of story when you feel like you just went to space...mindblowing immersion in a movie like I have never experienced. Great Film

Rotten Tomatoes is joke site populated - and ran by - trolls. Opinions are like assholes - and most people have assholes that should be safely tucked away behind multiple layers of clothing. Having said that ...
In the Japanese produced sequel "Glavity II", poor Sandra (as portrayed by Maria Ozawa) will have her clothes ripped off and be anally abused by space tentacles, while an 82 year old George Crooney masturbates and laughs as she helplessly flies back and forth in a suddenly oxygen rich outer space environment. I am waiting for THIS release to pop up on Youtube. Gravity in theatres? Nah... I'll save my money for beer and tissues. |

Of course, all you haters are entitled your opinion, but if all that stuff about Gravity you hated was something more to your expectations -- then it would be another cookie cutter Hollywood movie that gets shit out every week. Shit that's cooked up by suits.
I'm happy to see what is basically an art film by a foreign director that's popular and well-liked by mass America. It makes it appear that maybe people want something different.

When I first saw the movie I missed the first 7 minutes because we got into the threatre late. Tonight I saw it again and this time from the beginning, and you're right he talks to Huston. It was just an idea...chill.

There are plenty of movies where the plot is really nothing more than someone wanting to get home and dealing with obstacle upon obstacle. That motif is older than Homer's Odyssey.
This movie worked as an entertainment because it takes you, through genius use of 3D, right into the situation and has an almost real time experience of the events. This makes it so that 90+ minutes seems to go by like 5 minutes because you never stop feeling the anxiety of the scenario as it plays out. In that respect, it is pretty amazing. How many movies does one see nowadays that actually result in feeling something at all? Plus, any movie that is willing to kill off Clooney half way through has definitely not sold out to audience exit reaction polls.
