What is preventing the USA from using the metric mesuring system?

Can someone explain to me why the US hasn't adopted the metric measuring system like the rest of the world?

Verbal 11-03-2006 03:28 PM

stupidity ?!?

Anthony 11-03-2006 03:29 PM

I would think cost.

The cost of replacing and/or retrofitting all the manufacturing and inspection equipment being used in US factories.

BJ 11-03-2006 03:30 PM

common sense. you adapt to us.

Babaganoosh 11-03-2006 03:30 PM

We love to hear everyone else cry about what "the rest of the world" is doing.

We don't like soccer and we measure in inches, feet, yards and miles. Deal with it.

the us won't change, they're just stubborn. it's not that they're wrong in using the imperial system, but if they did switch to metric, it'd almost be like subtly admitting that they were wrong in some way. they don't want to come across that way now do they? i dunno, is it that big a deal really though? i can do metric to imperial measurements in my head no prob. grams to quarter ounces, grams to ounces, kilos to pounds :P

It can't be due to the cost. We changed ours a long time ago, and we're not that rich of a country!

because jesus doesnt love the metric system, duh

baddog 11-03-2006 03:42 PM

Because we, the people, don't want it. It is that simple.

Nothing to be gained.

stickyfingerz 11-03-2006 03:43 PM

Cause its what we use and we like it. We are taught both in school so its not a big deal. Its just the standard that we prefer. Dont like it? Wahh! lol

Sure.. Jesus never did like smoking, sex, watching TV or the metric system :)

But hey, it's always handy to claim "rights" not to have it as well - that would leave the concept that there are some rights left :winkwink:

Which other countries, besides the U.S., do not use the metric system?

According to a survey taken by USMA many years ago, the only other countries that have not officially adopted the metric system are Liberia (in western Africa) and Burma (also known as Myanmar, in Southeast Asia).
nice buddies you have there leading .... :1orglaugh

Do you really believe the shit you say ... ?

DjSap 11-03-2006 03:54 PM

people are slowly adapting to it...give it another 50 or so years and it will be almost completly converted...

abdulzabak 11-03-2006 04:07 PM

yep, maybe just 20 years, you only need few Sapnish boys to gain enough buying power to be important enough for producers to start metrics in full scale and as a primary measurement.

What I remember from US 2002 was about 50% of goods measured primary in stupid system of leghts of penises (inches) and as second in metric (for Spanish boys).
As they will become more important, metrics will win.

Actually its pretty easy to naturally split meter, liter into sub units, but no american I tried has been able to split their quarter in smaller units, just because it is not metric based.

This is same asshole crap as with 110Volts... Everyone knows 220 is more effective, but they just like it, because Abraham Lincoln did it that way, God loves it, and because US boys do it, it must be right, Goid bless america, president and porn. :-)

swedguy 11-03-2006 04:08 PM

USA would rather create a completely new system called USGSMS (US Global Standard Measure System) and force it upon people rather than adopting the metric system.

kodec 11-03-2006 04:12 PM

Sanity ?

corbu 11-03-2006 04:16 PM

i second the stupidity post!

Sly 11-03-2006 04:16 PM

A better question is... why would the US switch to metric? What reasons do they have?

300 million people know the current system. Of those, only those that need to use the metric system regularly know it.

There is absolutely no reason for me to know the metric system. I never come across it.

hahahahaha!!! :1orglaugh :1orglaugh :1orglaugh

This is so true.

I HATE having to reprogram my mind to use the metric system while abroad. I have to convert everything in my head, hate it.

I'm thinking about filing a lawsuit against the USA for not making me better prepared for the rest of the world. But I will settle with them for allowing me to not pay taxes. I think it's a slam dunk case. :upsidedow

yeah, I had the same issue in US, but converting US handsignals->metric is easier than other way. You just say its 3.8 liter, but you have to find if its 35/97th of galon :-)))

notabook 11-03-2006 04:22 PM

Sly hit the nail on the head with a nuclear warhead. Most Americans don't need the metric system, what we have works and it works well. Those who need to know the metric system already know it... I fail to see how switching things over will change anything for America.

Winterhunter 11-03-2006 04:24 PM

America like to have own system so it use is as advantage.

After Shock Media 11-03-2006 04:26 PM

I seem to recall we tried doing it once. I think people had melt downs and such. We can not be expected to grasp the whole based on 10 thing.

Plus it interferes with our hidden agenda. See if you do not have an accent and you use terms like grams, kilo's and the like. We know your a drug dealer.

maybe because of the 5.7 billion people on this planet that are not US inhabitants?

but you just convinced me not to use miles and pounds anymore in my posts - cause there's no reason for me to know your backward system that uses "feet" to measure something

No, I do travel. And when I do, the only thing I really need to know is kilometers, and that isn't even really needed.

Again, there is absolutely no reason to make millions of people learn a new measurement system when they don't really need to. Our current system works just fine.

We don't even make the Mexicans learn English! Why in the hell should we switch to metric?

abdulzabak 11-03-2006 04:28 PM

my opinion is, that US is just lazy, all people who deal eith something requiring anything normal is in metric (science, engineering etc.)
In all US wirkshops I was 2 sets of tools - inches and metrics - thats really very practical right?
Same thing is the time - AM and PM crap - they call normal time "military" because when you need exact time stamp, tradition must go away.

Btw - why the hell do US measure their motors in ccm and not in galons?

btw - what shoe size are those "feet" based on? and are those male or female feet? is Bigfoot involved in that? is it measured with or without socks? sandals or slippers? and: do they smell?

questions over questions... - but it's surely easier than using centimeter :winkwink:

What do those 5.7 billion people have to do with me? I don't expect you to know English anymore than you expect me to know German. I don't expect you to know our measurement system, but if you do, cool.

I don't know the Euro. I don't know the pound. I don't know meters. I don't know blah blah blah.

But you know the dollar, the yard, and the weight pound. Hmm...

Its not that you are so special, you are just ignorant.
