See how simple it is:

It freezes at 0
It boils at 100

Heck, how easy is THAT?! lol

What we gain is a simple and uniform system to the rest of the world.

You trade with them.

It would be very useful to the US if you exported and traded with them a bit more and lifted the constant trade deficit up to a postive level - the rest of the world does not appear interested in hearing about the yards, feet and inches the US still clings on to from the days of the Boston tea party. It has progressed since then :)

otherwise they will also find out that 1 centimeter = 10 Millimeter and 1 meter = 100 centimeter. :winkwink:

Yes but in this country, we have to create committees that cost millions so they can sit and do nothing.. then those committees have to hire outside consultants that charge another few million to submit their findings that state that they need to research further... more funding required..
Then the aclu must get involved because someone can't spell millimeter and it causes stress.. Then the bible thumpers start yelling because, "cubit" isn't included in the metric system.
Then of course there are those who would label it as an attempt by some wack job conspiracy theorists to change something that isn't broken..

So we just decided to drop the whole thought and live our peaceful little, "feet & inch" lives... :)

Huh??
Most of the houses in the U.S. have had 220 power fed to the panel for years..
220 isn't more effective for most household requirements.. Heating, A/C, oven, and dryer are all most households need 220 for.

How could it be more effective for small appliances?

Well in the UK we have had the metric system for years - but all signage is in miles we measure height in feet and inches, weight in pounds and stones and so on. Even kids who are I suspect educated in the metric system still use feet, inches, miles etc

...and why not given we fucking invented the imperial system so props to the US and fuck the rest of the world:thumbsup

We would never say 35/97th of a gallon, and the only reason anyone might be talking about 3.8 liter would be in reference to engine size, which is not measured in gallons.

It doesn't take anymore intelligence to understand either way, just different measuring tools. Almost all the tools I have at my house have both. I believe you lack critical thinking skillz my friend. Think about it. Your statement is agenda driven because you hate this country, therefore causing you to blind yourself from fact because emotions are in your way.

In the 80's I believe we tried the metric out. That would have been a better time, now we are too big. So as Anthony said cost would be play a factor.

My answer would be, THE PEOPLE. If we decided to start using it businesses would change and start using it and viola. We control what WE want. Why do you think everyone comes HERE to make money? Because we BUY stuff when WE like it. So if WE decided WE wanted to use it, it could happen. The free market will choose not some bureaucrat/bureaucracy. ththththththt

We left Europe, why would we want to be like the people we left behind? We left to get the hell away from them and formed this country, which is now filled with people from ALL OVER THE WORLD, because our way WORKS better and we have access to both because of that reason. Otherwise we wouldn't be number ONE! That last statement is going to hurt some of you and the ones it does are the ones who know it is true and HATE IT! :flagface hahahahahahah

And again, for anyone who said stupid, YOU ARE stupid. Understanding the metric system is the same as standard, our way. You have to remember the same numbers in a different way, and like I said before, the metric system is actually easier once understood. It's just a different measuring language. So your IQ wouldn't have anything to do with it. But the fact that YOU think WE should change to the way YOU like, and YOU think WE are stupid for not doing what YOU want, shows that you lack critical thinking skills BIG TIME. What made you the BIG GUY that we have to change to YOUR way? You hate us for not changing to your way. I believe that is called projection. Why don?t you change to our way? You hate us for not conforming, but yet you are demanding we conform. A little hypocritical if you ask me. That or you are just immature and guided by your little feelers in life still. :) Again that is directed towards the people who claims we are stupid for not conforming to metric not the person who started this thread. :)

Oh and I think Baddog and 12Clicks made this point but only they did it short and sweet. :thefinger

how many americans can tell u how many feed or meters are in a mile ??
i'm willing to bet only 2% actually know

in any metric country, 98% of 2nd graders will be able to tell you and break down kilometer, meter, centemeter and so on.

Most americans dont even know how many f oz in a galon
or oz in a pound

this is the only time i'll ever system
fuck this american system, it just doesnt work well

That was quite a long rant...

The whole reason that the rest of the world thinks you guys are crazy for using the imperial system is that the metric system, as you pointed out, is easier.

So, after the trouble of introducing it, it saves children in schools quite a bit of effort, and makes sure that absolutely everyone is able to use it.

Try and convert 3.46 gallons to cubic inches. The answer is ~799.26.
Now, try to convert 3.46 liters to cubic centimeters. The answer is 3460.

The first conversion, for most people, would require either a pocket calculator or a minute or two. The second conversion, for most people, would require roughly two seconds.

We don't hate you Americans, we just think it is quite odd of you to prefer an illogical and relatively complex system over a logical and exceedingly simple one. Personally, I actually hope that you never start using the metric system. The imperial system is kinda funny and quirky, like those african women who use neckbands to stretch their necks, or Canadians eating regurgitated food (poutine).

Oh, but no, it is not "understanding the same numbers in a different way".
The metric system is the same for everything. A kilometer is 1000 meters, a kilogram is 1000 grams, a kilosecond is 1000 seconds, a kilojoule is 1000 joules, etc.
The imperial system, however, is not. A mile is 63300 inches, a US ton is 2000 lbs (and 32000 ounces), etc.
The quantities described may be the same, but the numbers used to describe them most definitely are not.

And finally, some funny shit to lighten up this thread:
