The Expansion of the Patriot Act...

You should be concerned. Get informed, it may be what's coming...

http://www.alternet.org/story.html?StoryID=15541

Some highlights include...:

Americans could have their citizenship revoked, if found to have contributed "material support" to organizations deemed by the government, even retroactively, to be "terrorist." As Hentoff wrote in the Feb. 28 Village Voice: "Until now, in our law, an American could only lose his or her citizenship by declaring a clear intent to abandon it. But ? and read this carefully from the new bill ? 'the intent to relinquish nationality need not be manifested in words, but can be inferred from conduct.'" (Italics Hentoff's.)

The government would be instructed to build a mammoth database of citizen DNA information, aimed at "detecting, investigating, prosecuting, preventing or responding to terrorist activities." Samples could be collected without a court order; one need only be suspected of wrongdoing by a law enforcement officer. Those refusing the cheek-swab could be fined $200,000 and jailed for a year. "Because no federal genetic privacy law regulates DNA databases, privacy advocates fear that the data they contain could be misused," Wired News reported March 31. "People with 'flawed' DNA have already suffered genetic discrimination at the hands of employers, insurance companies and the government."

Authorities could wiretap anybody for 15 days, and snoop on anyone's Internet usage (including chat and email), all without obtaining a warrant.

Oh and here's a good one:
The death penalty would be expanded to cover 15 new offenses.

American citizens could be subject to secret surveillance by their own government on behalf of foreign countries, including dictatorships.

Oh it's fun stuff...

The Truth Hurts 10-06-2003 03:50 PM

fuck ashcr*ft, fuck bush, fuck acacia, fuck everyone.

TheJimmy 10-06-2003 03:53 PM

they pass that type of shit and it's time to RECALL the whole fucking congress...

The Truth Hurts 10-06-2003 03:54 PM

fuck congress and the senate, too.

iroc409 10-06-2003 03:55 PM

they're asking for a civil war, aren't they?

LadyMischief 10-06-2003 03:56 PM

Why anyone in their right mind can support an Administration that on a whim would remove all their civil liberties, and in fact already HAS removed many, I have no idea.

at least we have the 2nd Amendment as a backup in the worst case scenario...

we had to fuckup a bunch of pushy dicks to make this country free the first time, looks like it could actually have to be done a second time :/

A point that more on the left should think about. :)

LadyMischief 10-06-2003 04:05 PM

I want everyone to remember that Pornography has been linked to terrorism, or the funding thereof. This act would directly threaten our way of life (yes I'm Canadian, but it would affect me too). Like I say, get informed. Acacia sucks, but if this expansion gets passed, they will be the least of your worries. :(

i wouldn't doubt it. this in itself is unacceptable. nobody needs to have my dna, it's bad enough they have my finger prints.

if i had to give up a dna sample because i was speeding and didn't shave that day, i'd be getting in a fight with a cop on the side of the road. even if it was the state p.

and with their furthered attempts at gun control in this country, it's going to get quite harsh.

the problem is, most people won't realize it until it's almost too late.

No, it gets better..

Police officers carrying out illegal searches would also be granted legal immunity if they were just carrying out orders.

Federal "consent decrees" limiting local law enforcement agencies' abilities to spy on citizens in their jurisdiction would be rolled back.

God bless America

iroc409 10-06-2003 04:20 PM

didn't see anything on the aclu site directly related to this. interesting stuff tho, if i remember i'll call over to the local aclu, and see what their stance is on this.

From what! I thought Bush and his administration were the saviors of the American way! They kicked Iraq's ass, didn't they? That should be MORE than enough reason for them to stirck around!

StuartD 10-06-2003 05:39 PM

I think the US dictionaries are going to have to change their definition of the word "freedom" to include random cavity searches at airports, all communications to be traced, servaillence to be permissable at all times and the right for the gov't to freely give and take other freedoms as they see fit, except maybe the freedom of the media and freedom to not incriminate one's self (since the gov't can do that for you) :thumbsup

I didn't think there was much room left in The Netherlands!

Anyway, even though I'm Australian I've been to Amsterdam so often i think I deserve honorary Dutch citizenship!

That's an old article. Parts of the Patriot Act are already in the process of being repealed. Look up the Otter Amendment.

Also, the first Patriot Act cases are reaching the upper courts.
See the ACLU site for details.

Now ask yourself. Why did the original Patriot Act pass the Senate 98-1?

Seems like they're making the loss of life of the soldiers in Iraq mean less too, considering they're supposed to be fighting for freedom.. Just all seems a little too pat for me though. I guess I can't help being a skeptic about pretty much everything though.

This is the Patriot Act 2, it hasn't already passed has it? If it has, they aren't enforcing it.. and I would think having something handed to Ashfuck like that he would take advantage of it..

LadyMischief 10-06-2003 06:09 PM

THIS article is new though, and JUST as frightening, I think.

No. Partiot Act II hasn't come up yet. Think about why the Patriot Act passed the Senate so overwhelmingly. Now look at how there is a reaction back against it and certain parts of it are being challenged in the courts and being nullified in Congress. This is the exact same pattern that has happened about a dozen times in US History. (Alien and Sedition Act, Suspension of Habeas Corpus, McCaran Act, McCarthyism, and more). All the elements are the same.

Unless there is another major perceived threat to the US (i.e. major terrorist attack) Patriot Act II will be dead in the water.

Cavalry can't stay. Going to watch football. See ya.
